MATTHEW DEAR (GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL / SPECTRAL SOUND, USA) DJ

Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The xx, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service and The Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for the Fabric mix series and Get Physical’s Body Language. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none — and he’s just hitting his stride.

Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated fourth album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

JENNIFER CARDINI (KOMPAKT / CROSSTOWN REBELS, DE) DJ

Cardini’s productions have also been successfully on target, right from her first acid house 12-inch on Pumpking Records in 1996, all the way through her latest EP on Crosstown Rebels. These carefully crafted tracks have been slowly released over the years, but they have landed solidly on techno powerhouse labels like Mobilee and Kill the DJ. Most recently, Cardini has been spending more time continuing her production efforts, focusing on her current solo projects. She is also starting her own label, Correspondant, as an outlet for her musical vision.

KANGDING RAY (RASTER NOTON, FR) LIVE AV

Kangding Ray, better known as David Letellier, has returned in 2011 with his third album for Raster Noton, pushing further his explorations on the edge of digital and analog sounds. With ‘OR’, Kangding Ray continues to blur the borders between experimental and bass music, and brings his signature sound to another level, somewhere at the darkest fringe of club culture.

His live performances are known for being intense moments of musical experimentations, while he samples voices, and mix layers of different instruments, including analog machines, laptops, midi pads and guitar. Expect a full immersive experience in the first London show presenting OR.

EMPTYSET (SUBTEXT / CLR, UK) LIVE AV

You should all know Emptyset, the very special Bristol based duo formed by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. The project investigates the sonic potential of experimental bass driven music, reflecting upon the legacy of dub, techno and sound system culture whilst integrating aspects of feedback, minimalism and spatial recording. Their collective agenda has been exploring electronic music’s diverse influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed design. Following their self titled debut longplayer released in 2009, they have worked on a collaborative release with Underground Resistance vocalist Cornelius Harris (remixed by Chris Liebing and Ben Klock) and have just released their follow up album Demiurge – that is one of Alpha-ville's directors favourites of 2011. They recently debuted their live AV show at Mutek 2011 alongside Mika Vainio as part of the Industrial Evolution’s showcase.

Their live show at Alpha-ville will be a special collaboration with designers Clayton Welham and Sam Williams and will fuse Emptyset’s forensic sound with live video feedback, processing and tape erosion. We are super excited about this show, it will be a London Premiere, a not to miss!

TRUSS (PERC TRAX, UK) DJ

Tom Russell (a.k.a. Truss) heralds from a small Welsh village on the outskirts of Cardiff, yet he brings some of the darker and harder elements of techno to many of the UK’s urban concrete haunts such as Corsica Studios. Having released several tracks on London techno label Perc Trax, Miniscule, Dumb-Unit Synewave among others, his sound comprises stripped-back minimal techno that is hard and driving. Stocking records from UK-based techno producers Surgeon, Perc, Shifted and Sigha in his crate, Truss is clearly part of the scene here that pushes a sound that is loud, visceral and exactingly scientific.

Following a superb closing set at the Alpha-ville afterparty last year, Truss is returning to perform a live set at this years festival as well as contributing a mix for the Alpha-ville podcast series.
