riot! - Review

Reported by billy boy / Submitted 29-11-01 12:24

I hadn’t made it down to riot! since early in the year and with Sunday afternoon being cold, dreary and rainy, I hadn’t the slightest pang of guilt about missing anything on the “surface world” when I plunged underground into hard house chaos. In fact I truly couldn’t think of anywhere I’d have rather been !! Big grin

As it happened I rocked up late in the afternoon due to other commitments – OK, so I admit it – I missed the first half of riot! because I was watching the rugby. Winning against the Welsh was a slight consolation for the piss-poor display the Wallabies put on, and was definitely no consolation for missing Phil Reynold’s set… Frown

So, by the time I finally arrived I was revving to go, I can assure you – startled late Sunday afternoon shoppers were forced to take hasty evasive action as I bolted along New Oxford Street, not wanting to waste another second before hearing those tunes ! Just as I was checking in my bag I could hear the opening stanzas of ‘Beautiful’ banging out ! I jumped down the stairs two at a time and took a running leap into the throng on the dance floor and into hard dance nirvana – WHOOOO HOOOOO !!! Big grin Spin Big grin

Ed Real was in charge of the wheels of steel when I arrived and after having had a quiet Saturday night in, he delivered exactly the kind of set I was up for – hard, fast, bouncy, uplifting house. Razz One side effect of this, was that within 30 minutes of arriving, the pace of the music and my enthusiastic entry had my calves nicely burning. During a (very short) lull in music hostilities, I pleaded thirst as an excuse to duck away to the bar for a moment’s respite…

As I was getting my water and sugar/caffeine fix at the bar, I got present to the wacky contrast in music styles I’d noticed at previous riot!s. The bar is on the edge of the Funky House room, and slow paced, groovy tunes were rolling out, in complete contrast to the relentless, banging frenzy in the Hard House rooms. I think I even heard ‘Dancing Queen’ played last time I came down ?!?! Eek!

If you haven’t made it down to riot! before, you may not be familiar with The End. It is well worth checking out – a purpose-built venue with two dance areas. The smaller room (in this case the Funky House room) situated by the bar, and the larger room (actually two tunnel like rooms side by side) down a short, broad flight of stairs. The sound isolation is impressive, considering the rooms’ proximity to each other. An especially impressive feature of the main room is that the DJ booth (or console in this case) is positioned in the centre of the room. The DJs are clearly visible and accessible, which definitely adds to the atmosphere, making it quite an intimate and intense experience.

Having gulped down a few mouthfuls of water, I dived back into the fray and Ed continued thrashing us until the final beat of his final tune – wicked !! Big grin There was no need to guess who was on next as loads of eager lads shuffled up to the front of the DJ booth. Wink By the time Anne Savage actually took charge, she was hemmed in three-deep right the way around – some blokes who looked like they needed a paramedic 10 minutes earlier were suddenly looking bright-eyed and eager. Razz

Anne eased the tempo down from Ed’s pace and delivered an uncompromisingly hard set of hard house music. Some of it was quite dark and driving, including several unfamiliar or seldom-played tunes. It was interesting to me, because I haven’t heard her play often, and as I recall, the last time was at Serious’ 5th Birthday up at The Cross. If I remember correctly, that set definitely included more uplifting elements, including some that could certainly fall into the hard trance, if not progressive trance categories.

In this case, it was a hard and steady set that kept the crowd pounding, and as I alluded to earlier – Anne’s mere presence at the decks was enough to keep the energy levels up for many of the party-goers !! Smile This style led nicely into BK’s set. I caught BK’s recent sets at Convergence and Endorphin and this one really followed in the same vein – hard, crashing music, mixed up with some darker, ‘techno’ elements, all building around a climax to one or more thrashing, uplifting finales.

This set was hard, damned hard and the hard house junkies who like their music served up that way were kept pounding until the end of the night. I was jack-hammering away and driving myself into a huge hole in the dance floor when the finale finally arrived. I had just about dug my way down to eye-level with the floor, when the first strains of ‘Dreams’ were detected and the hard-core remnants of the crowd went ballistic. Along with the crowd, I launched myself into a frenzy, determined to cane the last ounce of energy out of my screaming legs. Just as I thought I’d given all I had to give, the distinctive tones of BK’s (and Farley’s) own ‘Khemikal Imbalance’ started banging in and the harderfaster crew gathered ourselves for one final assault. Big grin

Suffice to say that this was a stonking afternoon of hard house carnage and as caned as we were, walking listlessly from The End, we all agreed that Fevah v riot! next Sunday was going to be hard to go past… Not only Ed Real, but Steve ‘Get a Rush’ Blake, Matt Clarke AND Phil Reynolds B2B Tara Reynolds – now that’s gotta be worth missing Sunday roast for !! Wink See ya out there dancing ! Big grin Billy Boy Big grin

NB: The next (and final) riot! of the year will be held at The End on Sunday 23rd December from 9pm-5am (yes that's the right time!). The harderfaster wrecking crew will be there in force so take that Monday off (come ooonnnn, noone in their right mind does any work on Christmas Eve anyway !) and join us for the party...
