Endorphin vs Sunday School - Review Reported by Nic Robertson / Submitted 10-06-02 17:24 Endorphin VS Sunday School @ Mass, Brixton Saturday 1st June Sunday School had arrived early... .on Saturday night in fact and the lesson of the evening? EVERYTHING STARTS WITH AN E The culmination of two of clublands hardest events Sunday School and Endorphin was definitely going to create some noise. Endorphin has earned a reputation for giving clubbers a taste of future anthems and providing cutting edge sounds that set it apart from more generic style clubs. Sunday School discovered a vacant niche in the Sunday clubbing market for a harder brand of music; they’ve filled this niche successfully and remain at the forefront of Sunday clubbing. So bearing all this in mind, on Saturday night we put our backpacks on and set out with great expectations of what we were about to learn about hard music at Endorphin meets Sunday School... Walking up those endless spiral steps of Mass, you could be ascending the stairway to heaven, excitement builds as echoes of thumping baselines increase in intensity. Your heart beats with anticipation on reaching the top only to be overtaken by your head as the reality of decision making hits you... which room first???? Cloak room usually wins... just when you thought you’d conquered those stairs! And so our night began... starting in the main room, Sunday School resident Gary Coburn was delivering a hard energetic set defined by punchy beats and some excellent mixing. Looking around the efforts of both clubs’ promoters on transforming the very ungodly venue into a clubbers heaven were evident. Bright flames lit up the two cages at the front where the Endorphin dancers were strutting their stuff. Fantastic visuals and large neon banners kept the “wow” factor going and bubbles spewing forth sporadically all contributed to the magic of the evening. During Gary’s set we had a quick look in the second room which paled in comparison decoratively speaking and somewhat lacked atmospheric lighting. Words to club promoters about the dark ambience were dealt with professionally and soon enough some flashing lights came on and Steve T was letting the anthems rip much to the crowds’ pleasure. The purpose of the second room was to give up and coming DJ’s an opportunity to display their talents and judging by the awesome performances of Snake and Simon Field etc it was going to be a night of “room hopping”. Next up was hot young talent Ali Wilson who was giving everyone a taste of his own unique brand of hard dance music in the main room. A hard yet funky set including his tracks “Let The Games Begin” and “Dirty Trancing” became more uplifting as the crowd boiled with excitement. After yet more “room hopping” we settled on the consistently solid Tara Reynolds in the main room. Her set kept the crowd on a plateau of pleasure with a style that embodies the kind of hard music that Sunday School and Endorphin are all about, and she plays just as hard as many of her male contemporaries. Laxing out in the chillout room I was pleased see the night had attracted a friendly crowd of both Sunday School and Endorphin regulars with many positive comments on the high standard of music, friendly security and (most importantly at this time of year) the highly efficient air con system. The only gripe would have been a more effective cleaning of toilets after the notorious Torture Garden the night before... less said the better! Second to last set in the main room was the highly talented Nick Sentience. I have had mixed feelings about his music, my palate not yet cultured enough to appreciate his techno skills but then he will often pull a hard trance set out of the bag that puts all others to shame. This time he delivered the goods, a seamless set of driving trance put the crowd into frenzied rapture, like a roller coaster he propelled us into the unknown only to be pulled back on track with razor like precision. Pure enjoyment! Following Nick the last lesson of the day was by guest DJ Phil Reynolds. Like naughty school kids we got one serious caning as he belted us with tune after tune. It’s a Dream, Hallucination and Soul Taker were played to rapturous roars. His jocular interaction with the crowd would have evoked even the most dormant second wind, cranking the crowd with his uplifting hard trance. This was one strong set and confirmed for me that if you want to end the night on a high Phil is the man for the job. So sensible plans to take the night easy (in view of a grueling weekend) were thwarted by the organisers of Sunday School and Endorphin who put on a memorable night that would get the most discerning clubber up and dancing. We will definitely be paying both clubs another visit in the future!
