Frantic and 3-30 present: BLISS

Reported by bunny / Submitted 24-09-02 17:17

What a night! I mean... WHAT A NIGHT!!!

The best of the white labels, all the current anthems and a few all-time classics mixed with the kind of precision usually reserved for keyhole surgery. To describe Bliss as a rather good event with a few above-average DJs is like describing Egypt as a big beach with a few novelty sandcastles.

When you walk into Camden Palace at quarter to eleven and find it almost rammed and utterly buzzing, you know you’re in for something more than your standard clubbing experience. Frantic have gone all-out on the décor, with two huge screens either side of the stage throwing out the kind of dazzling visuals that could only have been created by a colour-crazed Teletubby let loose in the crayon box, the kind of lighting that makes you feel as if you’re dancing in a rainbow and the big spiky ball was back (yay!) and had obviously been busy in its absence – it’d brought two baby spiky balls along too ?

When we hit the dance floor Martin McHale is just getting started. This is the first time I’ve seen him but it definitely won’t be the last! Out-and-out upbeat, beautifully bouncy tunes that’ve got the whole room stomping and smiling like they’re trying out for a toothpaste ad. It’s not even midnight but already everyone’s charged to the eyeballs and clearing some serious air between feet and floor; then the most sublime Hard House mix of Insomnia drops and the whole place makes out like they’re doing the Olympic high-jump... I hope everyone remembered to wear their comfiest trainers tonight!

Lee Haslam is on next and the music reaches even further to the stars. This is uplifting Hard Trance in its purest form, a stream of beats pumping through your body like a lifeforce. Camden Palace is officially wall-to-wall mayhem now but thanks to the perfect combination of regular gusts of alpine-fresh air and the friendliest crowd in town, it’s chaos in its finest form. The music’s pumping like a second heartbeat and as fast as Michael Schumacher on a caffeine trip. Favourite tracks were Haslam’s own Music Is The Drug (the closest thing to sing-along-a-Hard Trance – does anyone now not know how potent Samuel L Jackson’s product is?!) and Jez & Charlie’s It’s About Music – the defining tune of the night.

After a good few hours spent tickling the heavens it’s time to go deeper and darker. Spencer Freeland starts his set as he means to go on, introducing a sharper sound that makes the dance floor work hard for its kicks and thrills. It’s a contrast that works; its time to stop daydreaming and get those glow sticks in gear, people! Add in another first-rate mix on Insomnia and you’ve got one happy room of ravers ?

After the kind of workout that leaves you with legs you could forge horseshoes on, we desperately need to make like a kite once more. Enter Phil Reynolds with an hour and a half of utter blissed-out Hard Trance. The dance floor is a forest of frantically waving arms and hands, the most amazing laser is throwing out images of waves, patterns and funky dancers and up on the stage we’re giving the floorboards serious grief. With tunes such as Deliverance by K90 and Good God by JFK there really is no alternative other than to throw your inhibitions to the wind and get those hamstrings pumping. Best moment of the set for me was S.H.O.K.K’s Isn’t It All A Little Strange, such an excellent track but you hardly ever hear it in clubs now.

Rob Tissera’s another DJ who I very rarely get to see, so it’s just as well that when he does play in London, he comes up with a set such as this. The second track in is Phlash & Steve Hill’s Get A Life (Frantic Theme) and judging by the crowd reaction I’m guessing it’s not an unpopular choice ? What follows is a slice of Sundissential sunshine served at melting point and yes, we are LOVING IT!!! By the time 4.45 rolls around there’s not a dry t-shirt in the house...

Last set of the night and people are just beginning to flag a little. It’s been one hell of a party but it’s not over yet. Andy Farley’s on and it’s time to knuckle down to some serious Hard House. By this point we’re up on the balcony, where there’s more room to move, and if you lean on the railing you can jump really high (this is very important, if not exactly advisable), which is just as well because you need all the space you can get! A solid, sonic onslaught carries everyone through the exhilaration and exhaustion, the tunes are driving like Grand Theft Auto and the light effects and visuals would make Dreamworks proud. Khemical Imbalance and the Hard House mix of We Come One give the Palace’s foundations the ultimate endurance test. Before you know it we’re into the take-no-prisoners encore, then it’s lights up and everybody out. Except it’s not. As testament to just how fantastic this night was, Farley treats us to a second encore – a first ever at Camden Palace for me. Then it really is time to drift out into the gentle autumn sunlight and bombard the local coffee shops.

This was undoubtedly the best night of the year so far for me. Everyone made a real effort - Frantic and 3-30, the DJs and each and every clubber. So thanks to everyone for helping to make the night of the year, and especially to Chiwi for some top-notch stomping and Robyn for organising tickets and taking the time to have a good chat!

Bliss... the name says it all ?
