Frantic Double Header Part 1: Convergence

Reported by bunny / Submitted 04-12-02 11:18

Do you love clubbing – I mean, really love clubbing? Ever get the feeling that one all-out, mind-mashing, trainer-trashing, soul-scorching dance explosion of an event a week just isn’t enough? Well the weekend of 21-22 December 2002 was the one for you! For the first time ever Frantic’s putting on two consecutive nights of Hard Dance delirium to really sort out the rave crazies from the rave lazies and YOU are their test pilots. So put on your brightest shirts, slacks and smile, your comfiest shoes and happiest face and pucker-up, cause you’re going to give that sun and rainbow some good sweet lovin’ Smile

It’s Friday night and just gone ten; the Fridge’s flood-barriers have been open barely 15 minutes but already the whole place is awash with a glorious torrent of day-glo excitement. Up on the decks James Lawson and Tara Reynolds are testing the spring in everyone’s step with a full-flow mix of upbeat bounce-friendly tunes and yes, Zebedee, the Gummy Bears and the entire kangaroo population of Australia would be proud! A quick stop-off in the cloakrooms (lots of notices around reminding people to get there early at the end of the night and the second cloakroom was open – good work Frantic) then it’s down to the dance floor, via the bar first for a little warm-up tequila, of course Wink

Convergence is a night that’s notorious for its music policy, a total dedication to the most ruthlessly banging, tougher than titanium tracks in existence and the look inside the club is similarly dark and intense. But help is on hand for lovers of the lighter side of largin’-it, with the psychedelic wet-dream that is the Fridge’s lighting rig and a laser bordering on the ballistic. Plus there’s the atmosphere that’s swirling around everyone and everything; if you could package up and market this then the makers of Prozac would go bust.

By the time K90 comes on at 11 there are no floorboards in sight, only heads hands, grins and glow-sticks. A drum tattoo like a heartbeat wraps around us, opening new doors into happiness, as Chemical Love spills out of the speakers and into a thousand expectant minds. With Breathe as the next song to drop there’s really nothing left for us to do but follow it and plunge headfirst into an hour of total sonic bliss. Up on stage K90’s as enthusiastic as ever, and it’s down to us on the dance floor to keep up... although with tunes such as All Your Base, Deliverance and I Get a Rush that’s not such a tall order Smile With the immortal Red Snapper as his swansong for the night Mr Doggett leaves to a well-earned roar of approval, then it’s time to stomp amongst yourselves to a brief Hard House interlude as Lab4 set up their equipment.

Building up the anticipation with a strange Lord Of The Rings style piece of introductory music, Lab4 take their places inside their cage-like rig, as the lights dim, the club holds it’s breath... and the show begins. Right from the first beat Adam and Lez show that they mean business – the Hard way – with their trademark aural blitzkrieg of hammering Hard House. Four Floor and Ready To Bop go straight for the kill but it’s their evil mix of Eminem’s Without Me that knocks me senseless. The whole place appears to be blazing and all the elements are there of a champion set – the unbeatable tunes, the audience’s eagerness and Lab4’s own relentless energy – but something I couldn’t quite identify seemed to be missing, meaning that instead of their usually exceptional set it was instead merely very good.

Quarter of an hour later than advertised but well worth the wait, Steve Blake takes over decks-duty as an onslaught of stompers take over the stage and total madness follows Smile Euphoria doesn’t come much more exhilarating than this, with a constant stream of storming tracks that lift the crowd beyond the point of no return and straight on into sweet infinity. Carl Nicholson and James Lawson’s awesome Times Like These ensures everyone gets real high, real fast and by the time the Prime Mover remix of Breather’s Come On plays my mind already isn’t mine anymore (last seen making a break for the heavens with my plot in tow). Take a look around and all you can see is a vast, glorious mess of mentalists stomping with such intensity they’re almost experiencing G-force. Top tunes, wicked set, lovely guy.

Another change from the programme means that Phil Reynolds swaps with BK to do the penultimate set but you’d be to hard-pushed to find anyone protesting. When 2 of the most established, most respected DJs on the Hard Dance scene are on the bill, no one complains what order they’re playing in Smile And with a set-list like Phil’s even Victor Meldrew would have trouble resisting the urge to throw a move or two... the BK mix of Tony De Vit’s I Don’t Care (a seminal tune but I always seem to get some weird kind of mental block remembering the name of it) Headspace, Get A Life, Phil and Steve Blake’s mix of DJ Uto’s Code and the all-new but soon-to-be-classic Society by Ali Wilson and Spencer Freeland send rhythm and rapture searing through the crowd like wildfire. By the time 4.15 rolls around and BK steps up to finish us off, there’s little doubt left that this is one of the definitive clubbing nights of the year.

So it’s into the home straight... legs burning, eyes glittering and every particle inside you on fire. BK hurls out a set that’s the epitome of banging, posing all the fundamental questions of Hard Dance; ‘Wanna Ride?’, ‘Are You All Ready?’ and, of course, ‘Excuse me, do you fuck as well as you dance?’... And you can work the answers out for yourselves... With classics such as the Glazby remix of Miss Shiva’s Dreams, Revolution (talk over it as much as you like Moyles but you still can’t spoil it) and Ascension to ice the clubber’s cake, at just gone 6am I don’t think there was a single soul who staggered home unsatisfied.

But were there any cloakroom casualties this time around? Nope, the whole operation was smoother than a Craig David chat-up line. Went to get my stuff at 5 and was back down on the dance floor by 5.05 – sorted! In fact I couldn’t find fault in anything, the whole night just seemed to work perfectly; the music was outstanding, the crowd incredible and a big thank you has to go out to Robyn and all the DJs for taking the time to chat to everyone, however munted they were Smile Thank guys!

So Convergence truly is a night that justifies its name, an event where everything comes together to form a perfect, flawless whole.

‘Twas a brilliant weekend all told, but I’m afraid I’d have to go one step further than you Bunny and say that Lab 4 were not very good. Don’t get me wrong, I love the zany guys and their set at the Summer Bank Holiday weekend Timeless was brilliant, but what was missing at Convergence was the flow. Sure they can crank out some fine tunes, but the set seemed rather disjointed. Bit of a shame to have Tara and James B2B for such a short set and so early too, because these two are on fire at the moment. (Mr Lawson’s set upstairs at the last Genesis was one of the finest sets I’ve seen this year).

However, on a more positive note – K90. What a man. He danced more enthusiastically at Convergence than any of the “up for it” stompers at the Fridge on the night. Although my excuse was pacing myself (and working Saturday).
