Tasty presents Total Recall 2 @ The Fridge Reported by Spacehog / Submitted 23-12-02 15:12 Friday 6th December, 10.38PM precisely... The Fridge glows. Clubbers embrace. In the darkness, Brixton comes alive and shines. People sing about the 'Summer' and the 'Sun' while they sup from cans of Lilt. Skagheads help little old ladies cross the road. Everyone radiates that warm, dewy, post-orgasmic feeling... that Friday Evening Feeling!... It has been a year now since Billy 'Daniel' Bunter ('Big Boss' of Tasty and Honeypot Records and hardcore legend who seems to always play in EVERY SINGLE ARENA at Old Skool events) threw his promotional hat into the hard dance ring. It was even further back still when Bunter pre-empted the fusion of hard house and hard trance and put out his concept album 'The Future of Hard Dance' in 1997. All along though, he'd been itching to have his own night, "the final ambition for me to achieve in this industry", and this time last year (sensing that clubbing had become stale) the timing was right:- "This [the current scene] isn't what clubbing is about. I just want to put on a good party - show people what clubbing should really be about." That was a year ago. So, where is Tasty now? After a spectacular opening party @ Crash followed by a bittersweet honeymoon period @ Mass, Tasty has now found itself, along with it's sister night TOTAL RECALL, @ The Fridge - probably the most popular club venue (with clubbers and promoters alike) in London at the moment. However, is Tasty truly at home in a single-room venue? The popularity and success of the recent events at The Fridge don't detract from the fact that Tasty's best times were at Crash and the early gigs at Mass, where both could offer more than one room of music. Perhaps this is what lies behind Bunter's decision to start off 2003 with a Tasty event at the legendary Rocket nightclub? With a heavy-duty sound system giving the old venue a new lease of life - and Tasty has the muscle to use The Rocket to its full potential. There are also plans to incorporate the SE1 club too... So, was TOTAL RECALL 2 any good? TOTAL RECALL 2 boasted a back-to-back fest that had DJs mercilessly double-teaming the decks: Continuing the B2B trend that truly flourished in 2002 were Tasty new-boys Snake and Tubbs. It's always good to see big events giving new talent a go and Bunter must have been just as impressed as the rest of the crowd as we will be seeing them again at Tasty @ The Rocket in January. Tara Reynolds is going places. Not only have Tidy Trax snapped her up and put her at the forefront of their campaign by having her mix their latest 'Insomnia' compilation, but she also had the dubious honour of having her husband, Phil, begrudgingly admit in a recent HarderFaster interview that (in terms of nationwide recognition) "she could end up bigger than me"... because she's a woman!! Phil also admits that "a lot of people have actually come up to me and said that they think she plays better music than me" - don't be so defeatist, Phil! It's not over yet!! Next up was the eagerly awaited combo of Jon Doe B2B K90. These guys like to DJ just as much as they like to do their Live PA's and it was a highlight of the night to hear K90 banging out 'NRG - 2002 remix' by none-other than... Jon Doe! Great to see these guys working their magic behind the decks instead of behind the DAT's. Following that were Billy 'Daniel' Bunter B2B Steve Hill - a duo whose set was more uplifting, shape-forming and creative than a Ultra-Gossard 'Look! No Pads!' Wonderlift Bra. Steve Hill, not content with making everyone 'Reach for da Laserz' with the Darren Styles mix of Taiko's 'Silence', also had a go at MCing on the microphone. His oral poetry flowed from the tongue like a river of words, rhymes and lyrical wax - MC Skibadee better watch out! Meanwhile, Lee Haslam has been getting mixed reviews when he has played down here in London Town. Here, he upped the tempo a considerable level and, combined with some tunes that would be more commonly heard in Northern clubs, this immediately brought in a set that could be differentiated from the rest. The music policy of TOTAL RECALL 2 was to "focus on the past 12 months of euphoria". Having a night that is concentrated around records that have only come out in the previous year is an interesting, but ultimately restrictive, idea. Arome's 'Hands Up' may be a tune that is loved by many, but hearing it played 5 or 6 times in a night can lessen the love. Closing the night saw two more B2B specials - Spencer Freeland B2B Steve Blake and Roosta B2B Justin Bourne. That is a hell of a lot of talent, DJing and production wise, and it was especially good to hear Spencer Freeland and Justin Bourne playing late closing sets. As the night drew to a close, Bunter walked by, forever inspecting the progression of the night, stopping for a moment to absorb some opinions from the clubbers:- "Alrite mate. What'cha think of tonight then?" says Bunter. "This is what I think..." I grin as I wipe the tepid sweat from my forehead onto my finger and nonchalantly flick it away onto a passing tray of ripe, firm, juicy, (chopped) melons. "... Now that's a party!". It makes a nice change to actually sweat from being able to dance, instead of unbearable heat and over-packed numbers of clubbers. And what does Bunter himself think now, a year on from the start of Tasty? In reflection he is satisfied, in expectation he is even hungrier, with low prices, fresh venues and musical innovation at the top of his New Year's Resolutions list for 2003:- "For me I want to keep Tasty intense and intimate for 1000 to 1500 clubbers, with a few bigger parties thrown in.... I also want to keep pushing for that unique Tasty atmosphere through the resident DJs, big production, and appealing to clubbers who are at our events because they know they're getting the real thing." Let's see just how tasty 2003 can really get... Saturday 7th December, 6.05AM precisely... An army of frozen Snowmen and women forlornly wave flyers that flutter unwanted to the ground as if they are frosted dead leaves. Like robins, illegal cab drivers chirp a hopeful chorus of "Taxi? Taxi?" as the sharp winter air bites like a vicious snow tiger. Goblins and ghouls lurk amongst the shadows of lampposts, their foggy eyes scanning eagerly for the vulnerable - helping old ladies cross the road is far from their minds now. White clouds exhale from people's mouths like escaping souls; there are more than just ghosts that walk the streets of Brixton on a dark Winter's morning, didn't you know?
