HarderFaster Members Interview with Paul Glazby

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 12-04-03 13:08

vicious Circle supremo Paul Glazby got where he is today partly by playing harder and more relentlessly than anyone else at a time when the hard trance sound seemed to be played by everyone everywhere regardless of individual styles. The other part of his success has been a string of dancefloor punishing anthems including Beautiful, Motherfucker, Fucking Hostile and that remix of Miss Shiva's Dreams. Mr Glazby kindly agreed to answer questions taken straight from HarderFaster members... read on to see the answers to your questions.

DMX: What's his opinion of trance/other 'hard dance'? At HHA his "fuck trance" t-shirt seemed to say it all, but was that just a piss-take or does he really jus....t enjoy hard house?

Paul Glazby: Bit of a piss take really, obviously with doing tracks like Floorburn etc I can’t completely hate trance, but my first love is the harder end of the scene.

lunatic: You are (in the opinion of many, myself included) one of the best hard house producers around, do you have a set formula for producing your tunes? what sort of things does your inspiration for producing crackin tunes like 'beautiful' and 'kick it' stem from?

PG: No set formula really, except big kick, low bass, harsh percussion!!!! Everything else just gets thought up at the time!!!

Pickle: How long ago did you get your 1st set of decks?... What were they? And what was the first piece of vinyl to be played on them??

PG: 1st set of decks would have 5 and a half years ago, they were Technics and the first thing I played on them would have been something like Kadoc – Night Train or some other thing from HMV, I soon progressed into the likes of Choci’s Chewns and the like!!!

Olly Perris: When is Fucking Hostile coming out, and whats gonna be on the flip of it - Did you make this tune deliberately to make a statement (with the vocal sample) or did you just choose the sample because it fitted well?

PG: Its out in about 2 weeks (www.vicious-circle.net) on the flip there’s a new track called pH4 which is something a bit different. As for the vocal yes it was meant to be a bit of a statement it was just lucky that it fit so well

spidergirl: At Riot on Sunday your set B2B with Karim was awesome. Do you plan to do more B2B sets with him in the future?

PG: I’m cutting down on my B2B sets from now on but Karim and myself do B2B @ our Vicious Circle events, keeps it more special

spidergirl: Do you prefer playing to large or smaller crowds. Which are your favourites venues?

PG: It all depends really, I’d rather play to 250 people that are having it than 2500 that aren’t that bothered, my favourite venue is Turnmills.

tall_tidy_girl: What age did u get in 2 djing & how long did it take you to beat match?

PG: I was 19 and it took me about 3 months to learn to beat match, back then though I used to push and pull the record if it drifted it was only after another 2 – 3 years that I started mixing with the pitch.

tall_tidy_girl: Did anyone help you learn how to mix?

PG: No not really, I had a couple of mates would could mix that told me the basics but its just a case of practicing as much as possible, you can’t really teach anyone to mix its up to them to train their ears!

little Em: Do you get pissed off with guys, just standing around watching you mix? Don't you ever want to tell them to piss off and dance?

PG: It doesn’t bother me that much, I used to stand and watch Andy Farley and Ian M, all that bothers me is people trying to talk to me while I’m mixing

ktec: Do you think software like Jeskola Buzz has much chance against the big boys like Propellorheads Reason etc?

PG: Not really sure mate!

bunny: Where do you find your inspiration for creating a track?

PG: Various influences, sometimes its all based round a vocal, other times its something that will happen in a track, like in Locked Up where it all goes quiet then the footsteps come in and the door opens and the track kicks back in, that all came from an advert I heard on the radio

bunny: When you are asked/decide to remix a tune, how do you approach the task?

PG: I just listen to the original and see what bits I like and what I can alter to make it sound more like me!!! I try to vary the styles from mix to mix

bunny: What's been the favourite remix of that you've done so far?

PG: Would probably be Dreams, Floorburn or Recoil.

bunny: How does remixing a tune compare to producing an original track?

PG: Remixing’s a lot easier because your halfway there before you even start, but then sometimes remixes can be a bitch if the original is really good to start with!

bunny: How does the northern Hard dance scene compare to the southern? Is there any noticeable difference in the crowd + their reaction to specific tracks/styles of music?

PG: I don’t think there is a north south divide anymore, you’ve got Phil Reynolds playing up North and the Tidy Boys playing London and they all play trance so I think the void has disappeared!

bunny: What would be your ideal gig (location, date, line up etc)?

PG: Vicious Circle gig @ Turnmills, Farley, Ian M, BK, Karim and me! Date wouldn’t be important for that one.

The Crafty Butcher: With less and less real hard house being played on the main club circuit where do you feel that hard house will be in two years time? And how do you think this will affect your own style of playing and possibly your career?

PG: I think that more people are getting back into the real Hard House sound, by the end of this year it’ll be big again, everyone’s sick of the trance thing, it always goes in waves, my whole career has taken place in a Hard House lull but I’m still doin okay, when it goes big again, who knows!!!

shazzabazza: Do you play any other style other than pneumatic drill hard house? Is there any music that even you find too hard?

PG: Sepultura are a bit on the extreme side!

Richard Launch: Your seminal release 'Motherf*cker' is like no other track. What formula did you and Paul think of when it came time to make the track....or did it just evolve itself....?

PG: When you say Paul do you mean Janes because I did Motherfucker with Maddox, but it was actually a remix for someone that got rejected, as I hadn’t used any of the original track (due to it being so lame) I punted it out as an original of my own and the rest you know about!!!!!

Markus: There's a lot of talk of the HD scene running out of ideas. The past two years have seen a lot of bringing a tune "up-to-date" or "bootlegging" an old tune. As a label owner what's your attitude to this and is this evidence that the HH scene is becoming more or more musically staid or formulaic?

PG: I don’t understand this, people go on about it all the time but if a track makes people get up and dance then it’s a good track, HD is just about dancing its not a deep and meaningful form of music! As long as new tunes are coming out and they don’t sound exactly like something else everything’s fine!!!

Rainey01: What did you do before becoming a record label manager/D.J?

PG: I used to work as a printer.

Rainey01: What has been the highlight of your career so far?

PG: As a DJ it would probably be my 3 hour set at Sundissential in February this year, as a producer it would have to be the Dreams thing, or possibly Kick It because I did it so early on and it still gets well received even now!

Rainey01: Is your name pronounced Gl ‘as’ by or Gl ‘aze’ by ?

PG: It’s pronounced GLAZ – BEE.

Anon1: Will FTR Recordings effectively be no more after the release of 'U Don't Know' (and perhaps 'Ta Mere') and if not, what's planned?

PG: As it stands at the moment we have 3 tracks to put out, after that I’m not sure what will happen

SunSchCraig: Now that you are widely viewed as the "Hard Man" of our scene, how do you envisage the future of your particular genre of music progressing?

PG: I think it may get harder, as people are getting back into the harder sound I will have to take things to the next level to stay ahead, that’s the plan anyway

SunSchCraig: Is there much space left for you to manoeuvre production wise?

PG: I hope so, I haven’t really covered that much ground with my production, I would hope I can try new things

SunSchCraig: How much harder can it go?

PG: A bit.

SunSchCraig: Do you like that people can predict what sort of set you are going to play?

PG: Yes and no its good that people come to see me because they know what they’re going to get, but how long before people question my ability to vary it up, that’s always at the back of my mind, it is hard when everyone thinks they know what they’re gonna get, if you do try to play something different you disappoint them!

havocboy: Which crowd to date has blown you away and made you grin like a loon, knowing you've sent people home bouncing?

PG: Riot the other week or Sundissential in February

Virus: what are your views on the increasing amount of people starting to use fruity loops? After guyver has proved that this program when used properly can produce just as good quality as any of the other of the main programs available with some amazing hard trance that he has produced have you ever tried using fruity loops if yes what do you think of it?

PG: No mate I’ve never seen it, the studios I use have Cubase or Logic.

Sniss: which current track would you most like to remix or which producer would you most like to collaborate with?

PG: I can’t really think of anything around at the moment that I’d like to remix, as for collaborations I’d always wanted to work with BK but we finally did something the other week, I would like to get Karim in the studio at some point though

Spherical: how much do you charge (roughly) for doing a remix?

PG: £1000

Spherical: if paid £100,000 would you play an S Club 7 record?

PG: Of course I would.

Paul Reeves: Floor Burn has a distinctive hard dance feel to it, does this signify a move in the musical style of vicious circle or will it come back to the filthy hardness we all know and love???

PG: All I’ve said to people about VCR019 is if you think that’s the new direction for Vicious Circle in 2003, wait for VCR020

With thanks to Paul Glazby for his time Thumbs up
