Spiritualized @ the Fortress Studios, Old Street - Review

Reported by Clubchick / Submitted 04-07-03 14:38

My best clubbing night – TO DATE – was this Saturday gone, 28 June @ the friendliest party in London. This party is called S.P.I.R.I.T.U.A.L.I.Z.E.D. The party was to celebrate its 2nd Birthday. The Fortress Studios is a short walk from Old Street tube. We arrived at about 11pm, to be greeted by friendly security. We made our way in, stress free to a very organised guest list. Also a free CD on our arrival. Already I’m in top form.

On the 1st floor we dropped off our jackets at the cloakroom. Not a long wait & then ventured to the funky house room which is on the same floor. This is where the funky grooves happen. 5 fab DJ’s banged out some great funky tunes starting with Ann Marie, Nick Rampant, Raul B2B with DJ Berty (guest dj from spain), Paul Smith & Paulo. This is a more relaxed, atmosphere with the dancefloor packed with groovers. This room is small & cosy with a bar, funky lights and bright smiley faces to greet us. One of the DJ’s was fixing balloons and running around like a Duracell bunny making sure everything was perfect. There was no need to worry Clodagh!! IT WAS FUNTASTIC.

I was really looking forward to it as I’ve been to a few of their parties. But as I was recovering from too much alcohol the weekend before. I was on a dry out, so I had to remain sober. But to my amazement, being sober was even better as I got to enjoy and remember every millisecond of the evening!!!!!

My favourite floor is in the basement. On walking in, I was overwhelmed by the fabulous decorations & lights. So much effort had been put into it. Even down to the balloons and fluorescent designs! Bubbles were blowing down from the ceiling on everyone. It looked amazing. Down here it gets sweaty and downright dirty. . It’s the hard trance/hi nrg floor with banging uplifting tunes. A friendly & very cheap bar on this floor so I make my way there for my 1st redbull of the night. Need all the energy I can get.

By 12.30 the place is bangin. Hot & sweaty with fantastic uplifting tunes. It’s absolutely packed with everyone going for it. Boy was I burnin Here is where the hardhouse/hardtrance crew bring it on. DJ Nico, Paolo Lopez, Frederico, Franky, Clodagh-Techno Tramp & Nacho.

I guess what makes this party so special is the fact that all the DJ’s are so friendly, the organiser, Terry is also so nice and friendly and she makes an effort to talk to everyone. I have become fussy on where I club now and I avoid places where the DJ’s act like Prima Donna’s. I totally prefer the more intimate, friendly parties with talented DJ’s.

The basement is pumping. After 2 hours of mad dancing, I need some air, so brad & I pop up to the open air balcony. Oh yes, this is an even bigger bonus. This is at the very top of the building where everyone comes to sit and chill-out & talk about the great evening we’re all having and most of all to COOL DOWN.

Need to get my energy back as DJ Frankie is jamming at 1.30 and he is total HI N R G. We make our way down and the place is going mad. So much excitement in the air, everyone wants it harder & faster as he bangs out tunes like ‘drug is the master’ (dj crow remix) & ‘can you trust yourself’ (matt Williams & jon rundell).
Wow. After Frankie’s set, I am now soaked and need to breath. Another plus is there is a masseuse on site to ease those aching muscles and to totally relax and be pampered.

It’s 3am and time for DJ Techno Tramp to do her thang!!! I quickly scramble from the massage table to see her opening tune. Everyone was jumping and screaming .she took us on an amazing rollercoaster ride where she let rip for 1.5 hours. Opening with underworld’s ‘born slippy’ remix & she continued with trance, then some tribal techno. She surprised and energised us with some hardtrance uplifting funky acid techno. This is not for the faint hearted. She ended with a really powerful hard trance track ‘trust in sound’ by KAZE. I felt like I had ran a marathon. The adrenalin was pumping thru my veins. Time for a sit down I think and another redbull.

This amazing night ended with DJ Nacho. I was speechless and already thinking about the next party!

A note to all clubbers..This is a night that should not be missed. Plenty of space to relax. But not much relaxing happening here as the tunes are too hot to just sit down. Fun for all. Everyone worried the crowd would be poor due to Glastonbury, but it’s the biggest crowd I’ve seen there!!!

This night is pure raw. What I’ve been looking for, real people, real music, real fun.

Well done guys. I am so happy for the team as they worked terribly hard to put this night together. Thanks for an amazing fun-filled night with the best tunes in London. It’s great to see that all the DJ’s had so much fun with their set and weren’t afraid to smile! It’s the friendliest vibe in London. Catch you at the next party which is on SAT 9TH AUG! it's gonna be a really fun one!
