Godskitchen Global Gathering - Review

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 30-07-03 10:16

It only comes but once a year . . . unfortunately the sun (after weeks of hot weather) had other idea’s. However, Godskitchens yearly dance music festival “Global Gathering” was going ahead no matter what the elements decided to throw on that particular part of Warwickshire.

We set off in good time for the hour and a half drive to Long Marston Airfield. Traffic wasn’t too bad as the local boys in blue did their best to organise things and make sure everything flowed smoothly. After parking up and heading towards the entrance we were greeted with the sight of a menagerie of clubbers with everything from try hards, day-glo cybers to bikini-clad lovelies (and some not so lovely) and weirdo’s like me. It was at this point that the heavens opened and the girls wearing very little suddenly wished they had a pair of jeans and wellies along with something more than a couple of teabags to cover their nipples – but I wasn’t complaining.

We got in fairly quickly due to the decent organisation and I was singled out for some special treatment by the sniffer dog crew (why does this always happen to me?). Having passed that particular test (*smiles smugly*) we made our way to the Sunndisential Arena to get out of the rain and start things off with a stomp. It seems lots of other people had had the same idea as it was already heaving and the partying had begun in earnest.

BK’s arrival on the stage really got things going. A wicked set of classic hard house tunes including his own “Revolution” which got a monstrous cheer from the crowd and suddenly no-one remembered that it was still chucking it down outside.

After BK I decided to have a bit of a wander round and meet up with a few more friends and fight my way through the now deepening mud bog. Having achieved my goals it was back inside the Sunny D tent to warm up with some pounding action from Jez & Charlie and then Illogik until I though a change of pace was called for. So it was another battle with mother nature and the sticky stuff (not easy in 4 inch platforms I can tell you) to the main Godskitchen Arena and Push “Live”.

Considering I generally like the harder stuff I have to say I really enjoyed their particular brand of trance with tracks like “Strange World” in particular doing it for me. The lighting and décor was certainly spectacular with seven lasers on the main stage alone and used to full effect. But the time had come for what I hoped would be the highlight of my weekend. K90, Lisa Lashes and the mighty LAB4, so it was back to the Sunny D tent.

K90 served up his usual enthusiasm with a mix of his classics like “Dreamer, Deliverance” and the ever popular “Red Snapper” along with a selection of his new material which will hopefully be released soon. The hard dance diva then took over the decks for another set of her own particular brand of extreme euphoria and she didn’t disappoint. The heat was building rapidly and if you weren’t soaked from the rain you were certainly dripping with sweat as the hard core of hard dance fans really started to avit! But the best was surely to come . . . .
The lights faded and darkness fell upon the arena along with an aerie hush. Suddenly a deep and moody classical sounding intro boomed from the sound system. LAB4 had arrived!

I’ve seen Adam and Lez perform many times and quite frankly they never cease to amaze me. What a show. Violent and angry tunes from their Virus album like “Replicant” had the crowd in a delirious frenzy and these were mixed in with some of their all time classic tunes. The lasers and lighting sparkled as the time absolutely shot by in a blur of enough kinetic energy to power a small town. I was expecting the obligatory set finishing “Candyman” but I was surprised to hear a tune that took me all the way back to 1998 @ The Fridge and one of their classic “Escape from Samsara” performances. It’s name escapes me for the moment but needless to say I had reached total nirvana. They were, as expected, truly awesome and the highlight of my weekend. My hat goes off to them for the effort they put in and staying true to the cause.

Time for a rest. That came in the form of a visit to the fairground and feeling a bit green after one manic ride and a go on the dodgems. Mental note to ones self – give it a miss next year! It was then over to The Gallery as a friend of mine wanted to see Guy Ornadel. Back to Sunny D for Andy Farley but I can’t really comment much from there on in as the nights extravagance’s were starting to take their toll but I think from there we ended up back in the main arena for Ferry Corsten and Judge Jules who played a cheesy mix of trance which the crowd seemed to like but I found a bit average.

And that was it. Daylight and finally some sun. As tired, happy and slightly messy clubbers from around the country made their way to the exit it was time to reflect on Global Gathering 2003. I suspect for some people, the weather had an adverse influence on the proceedings but I’m sure the majority had just as much fun as they would have had if the sun had shone. I thank all of those in our merry little band (you know who you are) but most of all my wife who’s birthday we celebrated and her first Global Gathering . . . but certainly not her last.

Tiesto, Marco V and Digweed for me. A great night - mud schmud! Still wish I'd got there early enough for Lawler.

I must say I question the wisdom of going all the way to this to spend all ones time in the Sundissential tent but each to their own Thumbs up
