Interview with Paul Glazby

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 09-09-03 22:06

Responsible for running iconic hard house label Vicious Circle and newly created label 999, Paul Glazby is one of the hardest men in house. We caught up with him as he prepares for his sound clash with fellow hard house supremos Ian M. and Karim at Chemistry...

HarderFaster: You’ve been dubbed ‘The Lord of the Dark’, the ‘Dark Destroyer’, ‘HardHouse Hardman’. What are your feelings when you hear these aliases related to your name?

Paul Glazby: I don’t mind names like that; it’s when you get called ‘Useless Twat’ that it grates a little! But seriously, it works both ways I suppose, it’s good that people know me for what I love to do but then sometimes when you’re trying to convince a promoter that you can play an early set it’s difficult because of the reputation you’ve built up!

HF: Your DJ career has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months with more and more performances in the Capital’s most renowned parties. Are you happy to have ‘broken’ fully into the Capital’s Hard Dance scene?

PG: Of course it’s great to be playing at the big London gigs but I’m always mindful of not over exposing myself, I would hate for it to get to the stage where people are saying “Why bother going to see Glazby tonight, we saw him last week or we can see him next week”, I like to try to keep some space between appearances so that I’ve got new material to play every time.

HF: Along with Ian M & Karim you are infamous for being the hardest spinning DJ on the circuit. It’s quite an elite group. When you get the chance do you enjoy hearing your ‘Hard’ comrade’s sets?

PG: Yeah, it’s not something that happens very often due to our schedules but it’s always good to hear Karim or Uncle Ian, when I first got into Hard House 6 or 7 years ago me and my friends used to go to watch Ian, it’s still hard to believe that I get the chance to play along side him now!

HF: Vicious Circle has been developed into one of the most quality labels in the UK scene. As well as your production & DJ bookings has it been hard work developing the label into its current format?

PG: Yes, what started as a side-line to busy myself a couple of days a week has developed into a full time job for 3 people! It has been hard work and a little stressful at times but in the long run it’s all worth it.

HF: Can you tell us a bit about your 999 label project and how it’s going?

PG: The first release sold out in about 2 weeks which was a good start, the second release Samba (which Scott says he thinks is stronger than Techsture) is due out in early October so hopefully that will do just as well. I hope people realise that NineNineNine isn’t going to be another Vicious Circle though; the sound is set to be a lot more experimental. We have forthcoming material from Steve Thomas, Aftermath (James Nardi), tenpm and myself over the next few months!

HF: The Vicious Circle birthday party is fast approaching. Apart from the traditional VC Hard Sound what other artists are you bringing in for the celebrations and by what criteria did you choose them?

PG: We try wherever possible to just use people that have been involved with the label on a production level; this isn’t always the case as with Tara Reynolds but I’m sure she will be appearing on the label at some point in the future!
We’re happy that we’re now in a position to be able to put on the line-ups that we’re 100% confident in and program those line-ups so the musical progression is right!
We have a strong pool of DJ’s to choose from but will be experimenting from time to time!

HF: The ‘Hard Style’ sound has swept through Europe and is now becoming more and more apparent in the UK with artists like Ed Real & Cally & Juice championing its development. As an established artists on the Harder end of the Hard Dance spectrum what are your feelings on the new sound?

PG: I can’t really put what I think of it but let’s just say Glazby won’t be playing it in the foreseeable future!

HF: ‘One from the Hard Box’ was huge success. Are there any plans for a series follow up?

PG: The new album ‘Vicious’ (who says we’re running out of ideas!!!) is out on 29th September, mixed by Andy Farley and myself, loads of new stuff and an exclusive remix of Hostile by Nick Sentience!!!! Every copy of ‘Vicious’ comes with a free vinyl copy of this remix which will never be available to buy – EVER!

Paul Glazby plays with Ian M. and Karim at Frantic presents CHEMISTRY: 1st Birthday at the Camden Palace on Saturday 13th September. For full details click here.
