Interview with Brad Thatcher

Reported by Newzkitten / Submitted 19-09-03 16:39

It’s 4 o’clock and the back garden of a home in an otherwise quiet West London neighbourhood is pumping.

Brad Thatcher and his mates have decided to throw one last Big Backyard Party before the end of summer. They’ve brought in a boshing sound system, lasers, fireworks and a list of local DJ’s as long as your arm, and they’re expecting a crowd of more than 500 people.

Thatcher is a promoters dream. He’s got a massive network of friends, he’s friendly, amazingly talented, humble and sincere.

Two weeks before the party I caught up with him for a beer, after he’d been told that he’d secured his biggest set yet - alongside hard house heavyweights Lisa Lashes and Andy Farley. They hit Turnmills for another belting of Extreme Euphoria on September 27th.

To say he was pleased would be an understatement.

‘Yes definitely!’ He grins.

‘It’s the biggest set I’ve played so far. Two years ago if you had have said I was playing this set I would have said ‘Oh my god! Or I wouldn’t have believed you.’

Brisbane born Thatcher starting mixing two years ago. He played his first house party within three weeks of getting his decks, and to a crowd of more than 800 at a Finger party just six months later.

‘I met the people who run the Finger parties, and they got me playing down there, I dragged a lot of people down with me which always helps. After a while I was made a resident. The guys now put my names on the tickets as a resident DJ,’ he says.

Despite its underground foundations, being the only resident for the Finger parties comes with an awful lot of kudos in club land. It helped Thatcher secure sets at the legendary Solid Sunday, Heat, Fevah, and Tasty. At the beginning of they year he had the opportunity of playing back to back with one of his idols Steve Blake at Fahrenhite.

‘That was the biggest highlight yet. One minute Steve’s my favourite DJ and the next minute I was playing back to back with him. He’s a great guy. The other highlight would have had to have been playing at Space in Ibiza earlier this year. That was absolutely amazing.’ says beams.

But Thatcher says, like any job – DJ’ing comes with its drawbacks. Promoters place an awful lot of demands on up and coming DJs these days, and then there’s the politics.

‘Obviously club promoters are running a business and there is a lot of politics that goes on. There’s a lot of pressure on you if you want to play out. You have to know everyone, know loads of people, put in a big guestlist, bring loads of people to their party. I guess that’s the hardest thing, to try and get a following. But I don’t mind because I’m sort of a peoples’ person.’

There’s no questioning Thatcher’s popularity. He says the Big Backyard parties were his kind of party - one that’s casual and fun, where he’s surrounded by mates. Even if he had the opportunity to throw a party with an unlimited budget and could have any DJ or venue in the world to throw a party he wanted he’d still want his friends to play.

Thatcher says he’d have Steve Giddio, Brett Mantis, Tim Penfold and Marty Hector (Marty runs Frantic in Sydney). And the party would be on an island in Central America somewhere.

In the meantime Thatcher says he’d love to play a main room set at Camden Palace - It’s one goal he hasn’t managed to achieve just yet.

Good friend and veteran DJ/ Producer Marc French says he’s well up to it.

‘He’s been ready for that for over a year now. Brad’s a big room DJ because he plays big room tunes. He knows how to work a crowd, he knows how to get a response. He’s used to playing to thousands of people at the Finger parties, taking on Camden Palace would be a walk in the park for him,’ he says.

In fact even before Thatcher played his first set at Heat almost 12 months ago French was telling people to look out for him.

‘In interviews I’ve always mentioned Brad as one of the best new guys out there. I remember hearing one of his demos and thinking ‘Who is this?’ and trying to get hold of him for some of the tracks he was playing.’

French was the first DJ to play Thatcher’s debut production ‘Something more Radical’ to the Heat crowd at Turnmills in May this year.

‘It received a rapturous response! It’s a very cool track. It’s not one of those hands in the air uplifting hard trance tracks, it’s much cool than that! Its very driving, it glides,’ says French.

Engineered by K Complex, ‘Something More Radical’ is due to be signed by a major label in the coming months. Another of Thatcher’s tracks ‘Wide Awake’ is waiting to be remixed.

Thatcher says while he was happy with his first outing as a producer, he’s sure there will be bigger, better tracks to come.

‘I’ve always wanted to make my own tunes. I play the keyboard and I work in I.T. so it’s just a matter of learning the software, learning the synthesis. It is a lot of work, the further you go it gets deeper and deeper and more involved. A lot of tunes these days are very repetitive, I’m trying to do something different,’ he says.

So what can we expect from Thatcher’s set at Extreme Euphoria?

‘You’ll just have to wait and see,’ he smirks.

I for one can’t wait!!!!

You can catch Brad Thatcher when he plays his debut for Extreme Euphoria at Turnmills on Saturday September 27th. For full details click here
