Wildchild's 1st Birthday, 24 October 2003 - Review

Reported by Els / Submitted 27-10-03 21:31

To say I was excited is an understatement, firstly, I was on my first official assignment for Harderfaster and secondly, I was going to Wildchild's 1st birthday! This was threatening to be an amazing event with the line up reading like a 'Who's Who' of the dance community. From Lange and JFK at one end of the spectrum to the Tidy Boys and BK at the other, Wildchild was back in town.

I arrived at about 11pm thinking the party would be well under way (it did open at 8pm after all) but the cavernous main room where Pulser was spinning was pretty empty, not to mention cold, and I wasn't entirely convinced by the Wildchild dancers. Thinking I'd have more luck in the second room I mosied on upstairs where the sound and heat hit me, it was banging from the word go. Adam Sheridan was belting out some seriously hard sounds which the people in this packed out room were lapping up.

Lange was on in the main room at 12 so it was back down to check out the Future Lord of Trance (according to Wildchild resident Reece Elliot!). Though the music was wicked and Lange played a fab set, I couldn't help thinking he was let down slightly by lack of crowd participation. The clubbers didn't appear particularly up for it and there still weren't that many of them here...

JFK took over from Lange giving us more of the same trance but injecting more energy. The place was filling up and people were finally starting to look like they were enjoying themselves! We dived back upstairs anxious not to miss Phil Reynolds' and Spencer Freeland's back to back set but decided not to stay. No disrespect to Phil or Spencer, they're both top DJ's but their set didn't really do it for me.

After hearing about the 'Reece Police' I decided I had to see them for myself. These crazy cats dress up as police and patrol the club while Reece Elliot is on the decks making sure any lazy clubbers get up and dance while gurners are given penalty notices - classic! As Wildchild resident Reece had a lot to live up to and didn't disappoint.

I watched Rob Tissera's set from the balcony with the vague hope of conserving some energy for Guffy and Shan's set. The Dangerous Duo impressed me again with their superb choice of tunes, top dj'ing and general merriment. These boys looked like they were having some serious fun!

Back in the main room, Lashes took it hard and dirty picking up where Rob Tissera left off. You simply can't fault this woman, her crowd interaction is constant and her mixing spot on with loads of funky effects to keep you guessing her next move. Definitely worthy of the title 'Queen of Hardhouse'.

We managed to stomp to an hour of Tom Allen's set before giving into fatigue and stumbling out into the cold clutching our partybags. Even though I had a good night, I came out wishing that Wildchild's 1st birthday had been held in a different venue. One DJ (who'll remain anonymous!) even agreed with me that the sound system in the main room is well below par. My overall conclusion is that this was a quality line up with quality dj'ing sadly let down by a poor venue.
