Interview with Prime Mover

Reported by Tom Allen / Submitted 24-11-03 10:23

Aron Paramor and Dave Parkinson aka Prime Mover did more to shape the hard trance explosion of 2002 than any other producers out there today. With seminal original productions 'Black Dogs' and 'Feel what I Feel' under their belts as well as a whole slew of unreal remixes including 'Come On', 'All Your Bass', 'Work it Out', 'Broken Boundaries' and more, it's hard to imagine how things would have been without them around. Now on the verge of launching their live PA at Twisted on December 6th, we caught up with the boys to find out their take on the events of last year and their plans for the future....

How did you both get into production in the first place?

Dave: I first took an interest in production back in 1988 when the whole dance thing was born. I started buying equipment and producing my own tracks, everything from hardcore to drum 'n' bass. I found the whole thing very addictive.

Aron: I started playing lead guitar in heavy rock bands then got dragged out clubbing (I hated dancing) and fell in love with the dance scene and its music. I then started my own label called Medikal Records.

We first met at Trade, we were the only straight guys there in those days! We got talking and found we shared the same passion towards our music and could see ourselves working together in the future.

Are we to assume you're a fan of big trucks or does Prime Mover come from the song by legendary rockers Zodiac Mindwarp (and the Love Reaction)? What's the story behind the name?

Zodiac Mindwarp and his rock 'n' roll attitude has made him a hero of ours. We even got him to autograph some of our records! That's right! We're huge fans.

You both worked on Contact Assist which I've got a fair few tracks of in my collection - other than the Farley remix of 'Perfect Organism' it's died a death - why did you stop producing under that name?

Contact Assist was Aron Paramor and Olly Freke. Dave's input was to mix the tracks down and add final production. Aron and Olly then split up and Contact Assist was laid to rest. Although 'Perfect Organism' was the last ever release on Medikal Records it was actually the first release that the two of us had worked on and co-produced together. Prime Mover was born!

Seem to remember you seeing a PA at Heaven with you two guys jumping around behind the synths dressed in space suits - was that you and are we going to see a return of the cosmonaut outfits for the Prime Mover Live PA?

No, that was Contact Assist and no to the space suits.

How much of a track can you truly perform 'live' on stage? What is 'live' going to mean in the context of the Prime Mover PA?

There will be some live bass guitar/ percussion/ vocals and an incredible laser and firework display tailor-made for the set. There will be new tracks and old ones completely reworked. Musically our show will be doing things you can't do with just two pieces of vinyl.

A lot of the detail work will be done in the studio then transferred to a laptop that can be manipulated whilst running live. We will also be playing instruments over the top so the show will be as live as any Chemical Brothers gig. What it means to us is that we have an opportunity to take risks.

Most producers produce under different pseudonyms so that they can experiment with different sounds without alienating their existing fanbase. However, the sound of Prime Mover, Grinder, Violatorz and Revolution 9 in particular are pretty similar, why so many different names for what you do?

Prime Mover and The Violatorz do hard trance/ hard house and are very different from Grinder and Revolution 9 who do pure trance at a much lower bpm and are played in completely different clubs by completely different DJs. Sometimes they cross over into each other, which is great!

Prime Mover: Cutting edge hard house/ trance.
Violatorz: Bouncy hard house.
Revolution 9: Progressive trance.
Grinder: Epic trance, sometimes with vocals.

Black Dogs was undoubtedly one of the biggest tunes of last year - it even won 3rd place in our Annual Poll (so it must have been good!). Did you expect it to be so massive when you wrote it?

We loved 'Black Dogs' when we first finished it, but it was so far ahead of its time, labels wouldn't accept it. So it sat on our shelf for six months. Thanks to Andy Farley who championed it, it blew up bigger than we ever expected.

Although it was originally released in 2002, we had actually written it the year before. So it's almost three years old to us and due for an update. Ed Real suggested a re-release on Nukleuz and we were over the moon.

What's your personal favourite of all the tracks that you've produced so far? And favourite remix?

Dave: 'Oblivion', the flip on 'Feel What I Feel', for its pure energy and drive. Remix-wise: Breather, 'Come On'.

Aron: 'The Weapon', simply for its beauty. Remix-wise: Marco V, 'Indicator'.

Despite the huge impact Prime Mover made last year as a remixer, you've only actually released 3 original solo tunes (The Weapon, Black Dogs and Feel What I Feel). Is the reason for that that Prime Mover was originally intended as mainly a remix vehicle for you two or is that just the way things have panned out? Can we expect any more original productions as Prime Mover in the near future?

We think there was so much hard trance being produced at the time that it flooded the scene and the hard house/ trance hybrid sound was done to death. It's since been replaced with influences of techno and even electro.

When we were tied to a label, we were allowed to release only so many originals under the Prime Mover name. And our remix schedule was rammed. Prime Mover was never intended as a remix vehicle and you can expect many more originals soon.

What other productions are you two working on currently?

We are currently working with JFK as Revolution 9 for Darren Tate's Mondo label - something we are very proud of. Look out for the Prime Mover remixes on the flip side. Also we've started a new outfit called Sleaze, which is dirty house grooves with 80s electro influences.

Any other tunes that have been signed that we can expect to hear in the near future?

'Here's Johnny' (Freezing Point Records) with an Andy Farley remix on the flip. And we're currently working on an electro-flavoured hard house track called 'Rezonator'.

Neither of you have ever taken up DJing professionally (that we know of!) And reason for this or have you just been happy to write the tunes?

We have just started DJing so we are now doing both. And we are very excited about the live act, which could take us to the big festivals next summer.

We hear you're set to start up your own label, Criminal Records. Tell us about your reasons for doing so and your plans for the label.

Criminal Records has only had one release. It was originally intended for bootlegs, something we're not pursuing right now.

Since Steve Hill's departure from the UK and Pure Groove, will you still be working closely with Tripoli and Y2K for remix work on those labels?

Yes of course, we have a great relationship with Y2K and Tripoli Trax. We will continue to work with them, although not exclusively.

When you're given a track to remix, what do you look to add to a tune?

When we remix a tune we try to add something new musically, say to the main riff, or chord structure. We also like to add our stamp through the percussion, and overall produce something we would want to hear being played out.

Finally, what are your top three tracks of all time?

Sasha's 'Expander'. Gat Decor's 'The Passion'. Push's 'Strange World'.

Thanks Dave and Aron for your time
