Riot! (Hard Dance Awards Launch Party), 30th November 2003

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 01-12-03 15:23

Another month, another Riot!, and without our fix earlier this month, us Riot! inclined people were all gagging to get bouncing and stomping to the hard house beats once more, provided on this very fine occasion by Danny Gilligan, Snake, Ed Real, BK & Lisa Lashes..

Now I'm not sure if the word of Riot! is getting around as fast as an Australian bush fire, but for some reason the Riot faithful packed The End extremely early at this event. By 5pm, the main dancefloor was rammed and the bar/funky room even more so! It seems that people simply couldn't wait to burst through the doors and get down to some serious stompage! I know I was one of those people, and as soon as I hit the dancefloor, Danny Gilligan graced us with some of the hardest warm-up beats likely to be heard anywhere. As a warm-up DJ for this event, Danny always plays an utter blinder and he really got the crowd going. As mentioned on the forums already, it seems like people had 500% more energy & bounce, as everyone was really getting fully into the party mood really early on! Danny's set comprised of some of the biggest tunes of the hour, such as the gigantic OD404 remix of Tara Reynolds' "Mercy" on Tidy Trax - a tune so hard, it almost forces us to fall to our knees and pray, as the tune demands!! Danny also included some classics such as Sentience & Farley's "Checkmate", BK & McCaffer "Gonna F*ck You Up" and perhaps the tune of the year, the obligatory DK "Murder Was The Bass".

Danny then handed over to Snake, someone who I'd never seen before, but boy oh boy was I impressed!! After speaking to the people I went to Riot! with this time, as well as some others, we all agreed that Snake's set was the best of the night! The tunes flowed early, with such stompers as BK's "Please F*ck Me" and some other old skool Nukleuz classics bringing the dance floor to the point of no return. But then everyone on the dancefloor spontaneously combusted (metaphorically at least!) to the euphoria caused by the dropping of K90's "Red Snapper". Now we all know this is a tune, but when played right it can cause near-death like effects!! Snake dropped the tune at exactly the right time - Just as the dancefloor was almost full, and when people still had the energy to bounce like no tomorrow. It caused dancefloor devestation beyond belief and typified the Riot! atmosphere - euphoric, happy, and down-right bouncy!! Snake worked his way through harder tunes such as Defective Audio's massive "Bomb Style" and the timeless James Lawson "Energize" (a tune which still gets a massive cheer) before handing the reins over to a very-frantic Ed Real, who seemed to be working at hyperspeed! Ed's set was fast and furious and then some, working seamlessly through massive tunes like Paul Glazby's "Get Down", Defective Audio's future anthem "Decimal Dust" and, er, some trancey tune called "Durban Poison" Wink One of Ed's specialties is he really knows how to hype a crowd and through endless clapping and cheering, Ed managed to get a huge response from the Riot! congregation. But he also managed to get people laughing too...how? by dropping perhaps one of the funniest tunes ever made, "One Night In Hackney" - if any techno purists are reading this, you'll be aware of the huge anthem The Horrorist "One Night In NYC" - well this tune is somewhat of a p*sstake! - instead of an angry man demanding "I f*cked her all night long", we get some random demanding "I stayed there til monday morning!" before the acid squeals come in to take our heads off - perhaps one of the standout moments from the night!!

Ed then handed over to a freshly-mohawked BK, who got down and dirty immediately, gracing the crowd with future anthems by Defective Audio, Dave The Drummer/Andy Farley and a MASSIVE new re-working of the Pants & Corset remix of Jonah "Sst Listen", one of the genuine classics of hard house still played loads today - the reaction was deafening, every single person had their hands aloft and the tune seriously did demand one hell of a big stomp!!

Unfortunately after this, I had to go because of the lack of trains (due to those bloody engineering works again, *grr*) so I missed the mighty Lisa Lashes, but I'm sure the forums will tell the story!! Riot! comes up with the goods once more and provides yet another wicked event!!

Until next time..

Great review olly - accurate in all respects, its a shame that snake is leaving us this week as he has really started to come into his own over the past few of months with great sets at HHA, Heat & Riot - a huge loss to the london HD scene!

Once again, Harderfaster reviews appear to be anti-Lashes. As the reviewer pointed out, Riot on this day was particularly busier than usual. One reason why - because the mighty Lashes was playing and the London scence wanted a bit of it :-)

You know I thought Lashes did alright... An enjoyable riot to be sure..
