Sleepless 5th Birthday - Review

Reported by els / Submitted 05-12-03 11:06

With so many promotions on the London scene now you don’t reach your 5th birthday without having something that really makes people want to go back for more. As soon as I read about this night I couldn’t wait to recapture my early clubbing days of fluoro backdrops and high energy trance.

Sleepless have always prided themselves on holding intimate parties with an underground feel, the first evidence of this was that we couldn’t find the venue! We found the club an arch along from where we expected and went in... I was immediately whisked back in time to what I imagine the very first underground raves to be like, all bare bricks and fluoro decorations. The breaks room looked wicked having been decked out like a tropical rainforest with leaves hanging from the ceiling and funky murals on every wall.

As we walked into the main room Tim Davison was tearing up the dancefloor with the Chemical Brothers Control. David Forbes Questions must be asked was next on Tim’s playlist and the crowd went crazy. Tim has recently been captured by The Gallery so we’ll definitely be seeing more of him in the future which - judging his performance Friday - can only be a good thing.

Tony Rapacioli took over from Tim at 12.30 treating us to some classic trance tunes including Binary Finary. As the bubbles popped on our faces and lasers filled the room, one clubber commented that the music well and truly had him by the nuts. If I’d had any it would’ve had mine too! This was top stuff. There was loads of crowd pleasing, hands-in-the-air trance to clap along to and smile at your friends, old and new. Tony also played a tune produced especially for Sleepless which Ian Betts will be doing a remix of in the near future.

By 2.15 the music turned slightly progressive and the dancefloor seemed to only be half full. As we wandered into the chillout room it became obvious that people had retired there for a well earned break to enjoy the music on a different level. Steve Jones of Space Brothers fame brought us bang up to date with Motorcycle’s As the rush comes, making the main room heaving again. He carried on the vocal trance theme with Chakra’s Home before handing the decks to Andy Harkin and Steve Hitch to give us their back to back set.

Andy and Steve masterminded their set to take us from simmering point to boiling over, I completely gave into the music and danced like a woman possessed until I could dance no more! Huge apologies for not being able to give you any info about Ian Bett’s set but I missed it, everyone before him was so good I was shattered by the time 4.30 arrived!

I really enjoyed being in a club where there was such a mixture of people and every single one of them having the time of their lives. The fact that the place wasn’t rammed meant that there was plenty of room to dance around and enough space to sit down when the mood took you. If you love trance then you’ll love Sleepless even more. When’s the next one guys?

With thanks to binbag of Sandstorm Party Pics and boywonder for the use of their photos Thumbs up
