Timeless @ Turnmills

Reported by Calanth / Submitted 12-01-04 00:38

Like Goldilocks in the classic kiddie’s tale, I found that this event was ‘just right’.Big grin Not too much of anything and just enough of all the things I value. I started off the night in the guest line-up- if you want to get into the Turnmills quickly, pay full price and forget the cue. Men got searched entering the club but not women- so no worries for me there (sorry guys).

After that I followed the tree-roots down to the club- there’s a surreal sculpture of a tree on the wall at the door, and the wrought-iron banister bears a strong resemblance to a tree root. Together with several sculptures of woven branches and lights, more wrought iron and fairy lights and swathes of material draped from the ceiling I felt I’d descended into an exotic fairy grotto. Finding the cloak-room was a mission and I’d suggest that first-timers fortify themselves with a drink before attempting this one.

By the time I arrived (midnight) Tin Tin [11:15-12:15] was pumping out hard dance in the Main Room – which felt like walking into the inside of a computer thanks to the circuit-boards painted on the walls, lasers, video screens and black & silver spiked inflatables on the ceiling. Lady Bianca [10:00-11:15] must have done a fantastic job warming this crowd up because already there was barely room to shuffle. Over the course of the night Lucy Fur [12:15-1:15], Caroline Banx B2B Ben Stevens, Ilogic [2:15-3:15], Tara Reynolds [3:15-4:15] and Karim B2B the *Ting* [4:30-7:00] kept up a merciless pace, moving at times into the realms of hard-core. This was a young crowd who gave as good as they got, and the energy levels remained fast and furious all night.Thumbs up

Walking into T2- the trance room- Shaun Rowland B2B Dom Pardey [11:00-1:00] felt like taking a hot shower! This wasn’t only because it wasn’t well ventilated (unlike the main room) but the combination of lighting and a very emotive, fluid, anthems-driven set sent shivers up my spine! The walls here were decorated with what looked like giant servos or springs, and the ceiling had 3 inflated (and 1 punctured) multi-coloured spiked inflatables on it, but for me it was the decorations on the punters that were more interesting. Neons, faux fur, glowing cosmetics and several of the outfits I coveted from Cyberdog! Mmm – I love it when people make an effort! Ian Betts [1:00-2:00], Guffy [2:00-3:00] Miss C [3:00-4:00], and Rob Tisserra [4:00-5:00] continued to deliver emotive, uplifting trance for the entire night- and I heard almost every one of my ‘favourites’! Perhaps one of the best things about this night was the musical consistency. None of the DJ’s got off track or lost the energy of the crowd. Big grin

Truthfully I didn’t spend a lot of time in T3, the House Room. For a lot of people this seemed to be the space to go to for a ‘breather’. Again though, whenever I walked in everyone was having a good time – thanks to The Trophy Twins [11:00-2:00], Moose [2:00-3:00] and Filthy Rich [3:00-4:00].

Overall: the acoustics at Turnmills are great, ventilation in the Main Room was fine, but lacking elsewhere, the bathrooms were fine and for once girls could use their own bathroom because the boys had stayed in theirs, clubbers were young, well-dressed, friendly and attractive (a good place to collect phone numbers).Blush Oh- and Mr Stinky stayed home for this gig- definitely no unsavoury mingers to be found. In short this was the sort of club I could easily become a regular at, and the type of event I’ll mark in the calendar for next time.
