Serious resident, WiLDCHiLD Superkid and part time production partner to Reece Elliot, Simon Patterson is currently laying down the gauntlet for other up & coming DJ's to follow. His awesome Dogzilla mix of Polariod's 'So Damn Beautiful' saw the track enter the national charts last summer @ an outstanding number 26 and was widely accepted as the must have Trance anthem of the summer! Simon, you are part of the Serious team – one of the biggest promotion and Dj Agencies in the country – what is your role there?
My main role is to source and listen to all the latest records for Jules. I spend most of my days surfing the net and on the phone speaking to producers all over the world, trying to get as much upfront stuff for Jules’ show. Jules would get around 250 vinyls and 100 CDs per week so I have to cut that down to 3 piles - Goods, Interesting and Not Sures – it’s normally around 50 records and 20 CDs, always varies . Each Thursday and Friday I go through the records with Jules and then decide which ones are to go in the box and which ones aren’t.
What exciting things are on the horizon for Serious in the future?
Serious are doing there first ever event in London on May 30th with Jules, Eddie Halliwell and Paul Van Dyk so everyone is very excited about what this could hold for the future, if all goes well!
When did you become interested in dance music and what got you hooked?
I first became interested in dance music when I was 16. Always listening to Jules and generally all the specialist shows on Radio 1. I saw Carl Cox play in Lush once and thought the guy was unbelievable. I begged my mum to get me a set of decks and it went from there.
What events in the UK are currently doing it for you on a regular basis?
Wildchild for me are the ones who are consistently delivering. Reece and Gemma (the promoters) have been working towards building this empire for the last 5 years. In the last two years it’s really started to happen. All the events are rammed and the music policy is spot on, giving people the best of both Hard House and Trance.
I don’t really follow the Hard House/ Hard Trance scene as much as I should but I know that Frantic are smashing each party they put on. It’s refreshing to see such brands coming through, I think that people are bored of seeing the same people putting on the same Djs. Both promotions concentrate on fresh talent which is vitally important if the scene is to progress.
This Sunday sees your debut for Frantic at Chemistry – how does it feel playing for such a large hard dance promotion? What kind of set do you have in store for us?
I can’t wait to play for Frantic. The atmosphere at each event that I have been too has been excellent. A lot of effort goes into each event and it gives me an opportunity to play a style that I never really get a chance to play. Mixing tough trance with tech trance. Should be a really good night, looking forward to it.
Ibiza is now only 2 months away, do you have any plans for summer on the white Isle?
I have got some dates at Judgement Sunday. This will be my first year playing in Ibiza so it’s something that I am really excited about. The island has lost the majority of it’s ‘beer boy’ image and it’s more about clubbing and music. Lots of beautiful people with constant sunshine, what more do you need!
You have had massive success with your production team Dogzilla with your “Dogzilla” release and your massive remix of ‘So Damn Beautiful’ – what can we expect from Dogzilla in the future?
The 2nd single is finally finished which is called ‘Your Eyes’, it’s slightly different to the 1st single in the sense that it is much more alternative, very tecky with interesting drums but keeping to the usual Dogzilla format with the big euphoric breakdown. We have also just finished a remix for the Magnolia record on Ministry, the mix is in the same vein as Poloroid but much madder and darker. Starting Dogzilla 3 next week, it should be finished next year at the rate we work!

Many people expressed doubts about the future of clubbing in 2003 – what do you think the state of play is in 2004? Have things improved or got worse?
The market has been saturated for a few years by the choice of so many nights to go too. Years ago you didn’t have so much choice. There are a lot of new brands coming through now and the scene is changing a great deal. From what I have seen numbers are on the up and there is a much more positive vibe going on now. I think club-land got too commercial, it’s started to go back to it’s roots which is what it needed to gain back some of it’s credibility.
If you could have any line up for your birthday party, what djs would you have playing for you and why?
Judge Jules > Obviously! Still rocks it everywhere he goes.
Eddie Halliwell > For me the best DJ around at the moment. Such enthusiasm and talent.
Tiesto > Really like his style, combines the best of trance with techno.
Ferry Corsten > Only one of big few trying to be different with his sound. Excellent DJ too.
Darren Tate > Love his production and one of the nicest people in dance.
Reece Elliot > Heart and soul of every party!
Adam (CERN) > One of the best up and coming DJS and excellent producer.
And finally, if you could only hear three dance tunes ever again what would they be?
