Riot! Bank Holiday Preview: Interview with Nick Sentience

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 25-05-04 17:17

Nick Sentience needs little introduction. He has constantly remained top of the hard dance production tree and has become the producer that everyone aspires to be. His innovative blend of techno beats and hard dance synths pioneered the sound that is so commonly, yet cheaply imitated today. With the imminent release of his album Universal Language, and his exclusive bank holiday set for Riot! on the 30th May, I managed to catch up with Nick to get his thoughts on the album’s launch, and the future for his Quality Trax label…

Olly:You are now one of the most respected producers in hard dance, having received universal praise from people both inside and outside of the hard dance circle. Now you have put together your Live PA act, how does it feel to be playing your own music to such a wide audience?

Nick: I'm really enjoying all aspects of what's happening at the moment. Getting a positive response to my live sets is nice as I know that it's my own material that people are enjoying. Playing Live is different to DJ'ing as I feel like I get more freedom to experiment with the music as people seem to approach it with an open mind as to what you will do.

Olly: The show features some live VJ effects too. How did this come about? What sort of dimension do you feel having live visuals adds to a performance?

Nick: This came about from when I used to play at Endorphin, and we would always have video production in by VJ FX and I got to know him through that. He’d been planning a Dance DVD for a while and I was looking for an angle to make my album different from the norm, so I asked if he wanted to link it up to the album. As far as Live goes I think it makes the show an all encompassing experience as you can get lost in the visuals while dancing to the music. Add some dancers and performers onto that and it's a full on show!

Olly: You are playing a DJ set exclusively for Riot! over the bank holiday period in London. This is also your first set at Riot! for over a year. Do you have any fond memories of Riot! and how do you feel it compares to other clubs you play at?

Nick: I've always had a great time whether I've been playing or just down for a night out so I'm looking forward to this one. I've been to most of them since it first started so I can pick out loads of great laughs. It's also a very unique club. The End is a great venue with a pumping sound system and is often used as a techno club so it's got a futuristic vibe to it. You can dance your socks off in the main room to banging hard dance or chill and socialise in the house room so I think those two flavours have been the winning ingredients.

Olly: With the Live PA act, will your DJing schedule remain fairly hectic, or will DJing now take a back seat to your live performances?

Nick: This year I'm pretty much taking on all aspects of what I do to the max so I will be DJ'ing, playing Live, running the label, remixing and I've already started producing the follow up album so it's full steam

Olly: Over to your new label now, Quality Trax. You remained pretty quiet throughout the whole of 2003 to allow the setting up of the new label and the Live PA act. This obviously must have been a lot of hard work, but with shining performances like your recent gigs at Scala and Camden Palace , do you feel this has all paid off?

Nick: 2003 was definitely a year of preparation for me. I wanted to release an album of new material that no-body had heard before so I held back on my solo productions until it was ready and just did remixes. I do feel like everything has stepped up a gear this year and it's all starting to take shape. It's really just the beginning at the moment. Running a label is a life-time project and we've got loads of material to get started with so the next few months with at numerous releases every month should be just the ticket!

Olly: The album 'Universal Language' and the album sampler disc are the biggest selling units in hard dance right now. What do you have lined up for future Quality Trax releases?

Nick: In the pipeline is a mixture of tracks from the album with brand new material alongside them. The first vinyl ‘Afrotekno’ and ‘Essence’ has hit the shops and the next release will be a new track by myself and Phil Reynolds called ‘Timescape’ which also has ‘Cause and Effect’ on it. The third will be myself and James Lawson ‘On a Roll’ with a brand new track that just being finished and that will be followed by a solo track by myself with future releases straight after that which are collaborations with Ali Wilson and Matt Williams.

Olly: Will Quality Trax remain an outlet for your productions & collaborations only, or will other producers be featured on the label? If so, who do you have lined up?

Nick: I will be using my own productions, projects and collaborations to get it off the ground and to get to the stage where we can break other artists as well. At the moment Phil Reynolds is working on his artist album for us and I'm really looking forward to that as he's writing a whole batch of new and fresh music and coming into his own unique style, so look out for that later this year!

Olly: You have recently finished a new track with Paul Maddox. What is this tune like, and what was it like to work with Paul? Will this be something for Quality Trax or Tidy Trax?

Nick: Yep, we finished one and have started another and got on really well. The track has come out quite experimental but with some familiar aspects and is getting a lot of positive feedback so we're looking forward to that coming out. We haven't decided a label yet but I'm happy with either.

Olly: What other productions do you have in the pipeline? Will you be perhaps also try other genres, for example like the breakbeat tracks on your album?

Nick: My first priority from now is making sure that all of the albums tracks have new productions to go with them when they go out, so I'll be completing the releases with James Lawson, Ali Wilson, Matt Williams and Paul Maddox. I have some remixes to do as well for Heat, Elasticman, Short Circuit and Flashpoint and then I'll be getting stuck into the next album for release later this year which will be a chance for me to experiment further with all styles of music.

Olly: Finally, where do you see the sound of UK hard dance floors heading in the next year or so?
What’s your opinion on the darker, techier hard house which has been the flavour of the month for quite a while now?

Nick: I would say that as a lot of producers are taking on album projects, we can expect to see a lot of variety and new ideas coming into the sound. A lot of DJ's enjoy playing a few different styles of music these days as well as the harder stuff so there's a lot of scope for new concepts and merging of sounds. With regard to the darker hard house I see it the same as all music which is if somebody plays and makes it really well, it will be enjoyable.

Olly: Don’t forget you can catch Nick Sentience performing a DJ set at Riot! at the End, London on the 30th May! Also check out this event for your chance to get your hands on a very exclusive signed copy of the first release from Riot! records. Featuring the brand new BK anthem ‘Insane’ and BK & Ed Real’s excellent collaboration ‘A Little Love’, this is not to be missed!

Great interview and huge respect to Nick for putting together what is, in my opinion, one of the best artist albums from a dance producer I've ever heard. Universal Language is *that* good!
