Convergence Magnificent 7 Preview: Interview with the one and only Lucy Fur!

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 24-06-04 12:48

As one of the new breed of female DJs steadily grabbing the limelight from their male counterparts, Lucy Fur has been making waves in clubland over the past year with her downright filthy hard driving house and NRG sets at clubs all over London. Now a regular feature at top UK night Frantic she'll be rocking the top room at this weekend's Convergence: The Magnificent Seven...

Firstly Lucy can you clear something up for us. Your DJ alias: does it mean you’re a fan of fur or that you really play so hard you could be mistaken for Lucifer [Lucy-Fur] the Lord of the Underworld a.k.a Beelzebub a.k.a The Devil?

Both actually! I still have my fury zebra bra from my sundissential days- havent worn it for a long time.....took me hours to make it! The devil part was purely by accident,- my friend said 'Lucy Fur, you know what that sounds like...'. Yes I can be naughty but I am very nice!

Your Record Box has a fur finish to it. Was this custom made or something you stumbled across on your DJ travels?

I wish I could afford custom made! Bless my mum, she rung up the hardtofind records store and got it as I x-mas present, I had no idea that she would do that! If I had anything custom made it would definately be a pair of metalic pink headphones- like Mauro's illuminus yellow ones, very nice.

You belong to a elite group of femme fatale DJs who from the outside it appears that butter would not melt in your mouth, but under the surface lies a ferocious hunger for only the most extreme Hard House! Where does your passion for this style come from?

Initially I was big time into the bounce, part of me will always love that too. I have always been into the harder edge sound, even when trends changed I always kept my style and that's what I am really proud of actually. Then the likes of Nukleuz/Kaktai and Vicious Circle appeared with harder edge bounce-I love the energy created. As a non pill taker, I always find myself getting tired around 4am, but with the harder hardhouse and Nu-nrg sound, I found myself outlasting anyone else on the dancefloor! I would never buy anything from a store unless it physically made me want to dance wherever I was. That is the way iv'e always chosen my tracks and I feel it has always worked for me.

Donna Birt, your self, Dirt Bitch, Caroline Banx, Amber D, Tara Reynolds and Nicki S appear to be all cut from the same cloth in your musical preference. Why do you think there is a sudden vast seem of female DJs passionate about the Filth?

For me it has always been about the energy and I have always stayed hard house focussed. I am not sure if it is about having something to prove by the other females-they certainly have nothing to prove-just look at what they are doing! As we all know, the industry is very male dominated and I think it's great that the girls come on the scene and say 'have some of that!!!!'

This Saturday sees the crème de la crème of femme fatale’s [including yourself] take over the UP TOP Bar at the Scala – its very much girls vs. boys with a very testosterone fuelled Magnificent 7 in the Main Room. Do you think the boys are worried about you girls in the Up Top arena?

The boys are a pretty tough match downstairs I would have to admit. But they obviously bottled out on girl/boy b2b's............ No seriously, what an event, couldn't have picked a better line-up myself. You have a dj for every genre of hard dance.

Your cause has been championed by Caroline Banx resulting in her being signed to one of the most successful Hard Dance management companies in the World, Nukleuz, and also being invited to mix HardHouse Anthems 5. Would this be a route you would like to take as well?

Ah caroline! What a sweetie. She did a fantastic job with the CD. Of course I would love to do that. What an experience to represent something as influencial and as huge as Nukleuz and at the same to show the UK what you're made of!

Most DJs have a set that they would call their ‘Big Break’ – what was yours?

Big breaks? I have been very lucky to have had so many opportunties. Most memorable have got to be the Valentines Ball at the last ever Frantic at Camden Palace and LASHED! Camden we will talk of in a minute, but LASHED was an amazing experience. Playing to all those people that were loving what I was playing for them- I love making people dance and the look on their face when the next track kicks in and they are like 'aaaahhhhh'.

Even though you live in Kent you’re considered to be very much a product of the hard Dance Mecca that is South London having played at the Brixton Quartet: The 414, The Fridge, Mass and the infamous G4. Would you saying that cutting your teeth in the DJ shark pool of South London has meant you could now play anywhere?

South London has been very kind to me, and I never realized before how strong the scene is there. It has giving me the confidence and enthusiasm I need to continue the ladder climb. I have very fond memories in all the Brixton venues especially-and if you would have told me 2 years ago that I would be playing the main room of the Fridge and at Brixton Academy, there's no way I would believe you.

Tara Reynolds has been a mentor figure for you over the past few years. How did you meet Tara and who else has influenced you in your career?

Tara is my ultimate hero-she will cringe reading this because I think shes a superstar, as do many of you, but shes very down to earth. Tara and I met in Camden Palace through a friend. I gave her a very shoddy demo and she promised to listen to it. She did and gave me lots of advise that I took on board. The next demo, she liked more, we kept in touch more often and she put my name forward for a gig she could not do, my first ever London gig! After that, she helped me settle in London and our relationship is how it is now. Shes a lovely lady, has a lovely partner and a great future ahead of her (I dont worship her that much!!!!???).

Other influences, in the beginning, all the Tidy girls- I remember the days of Screwdriver, Looking Good, We Came We Saw..... you know how it goes!!! Wow, they were and still are fantastic. And then came Glazby. Well ive never been taken so much by someone's style and the way he mixes. I collected all his remixes even before VC was around- genius!

Production is the next logical step for all young DJs – have you worked on anything yet and when can we expect to see Miss Fur on the shelves of the London Record stores?

So many plans, not enough time! My main priority is to get a track finished with DirtyBitch and go from there- it will be stomping. But nothing in close proximity i'm afraid. Many people have approached me, but most are up north so it's hard to get the time to go up and do it. There are many ideas floating around, so don't worry, when it arrives, it will be top shelf material!

Who would you most like to work with in production and why?

Ok back in the day I would have gone for the obvious Glaxby, Farley etc.. but there's so much new talent coming through, so I am going to go with Mark Leish, Kam Pain, A-Star purely because the recent tracks coming out are really appealing. Established, I would have to say Defective Audio- quality tracks every time.

Your close friends with the aptly named ‘Dirty Bitch’ a.k.a Louise Savage who is equally as driven toward the Dark Side of Harder House as yourself. How did you meet?

I think Louise and I met at RIOT actually, she used to be one of the dancers there and we met through a friend. Over the past year we have become very good friends, and she lives close by which is nice as we try to go to each others gigs as often as possible. The great thing about us is our style are slightly different, so our b2b's have a powerful punch!

You where one of the DJs invited to play the Main Room at the gone but not forgotten Camden Palace for Frantic’s last ever gig there earlier this year. How did it go?

It was my dream ambition. 'Iv'e got to play main room Camden one day'. I was determined, and luckily for me, before it was closed I was asked to do it! I was very critical about my set- but I couldnt be more wrong according to the crowd!! Midway through I played the barbwire remix of Tony De Vi's I dont Care, and I could have cried with the atmosphere that was created. I had a 20 minute snippit film of my set made that I showed to all my friends and family that we had secretly recorded- I had to have something on film!!! Watching it back the next day, it was like 'that was me wow' ! Sorry to sound corny, but it was a dream gi to play main room Frantic @ Camden- and to be the last one well, I will shush now.

You still hold down a full time job in the travel industry as well as DJing. Ideally would you like to switch this for travelling as a DJ or are you happy with your set up as it is?

Travelling as a DJ? My two favourite words! No I would love to be a full time DJ, producing during the week and out all weekend- sounds fun doesn't it? But we all know how much hard work is involved. One time I was explaining to someone how I had just had a few hours kip in our car between gigs, and someone turned round and said 'A car? But youre a DJ, dont you stay in a hotel?'!

What’s the biggest gig you are going to play this year?

Im secretly hoping for the foyer @ Hard House Academy later in the year (between you and me ok!), I am set to play the August Wildchild event also which I am very excited about, and radio slots later in the year that I have never done. We will see what the future holds.

Where is it your ultimate ambition to play?

Definately the foyer @ Hard House Academy, that would be very cool and big ambition is the Tidy Weekenders- they are one hell of an event and I would love to be involved.

What can we expect from you at Convergence this weekend?

Expect? Do you really need to ask the question? I am not going to let the fans down now am I?........................................

Lucy, thanks for your time!

Pleasure – see you Saturday!
