Review: Bedlam @ The Fridge – 4th June 2004 Reported by Adam Symbiosis / Submitted 27-06-04 17:04 A bank holiday weekend always seems to turn out to be a crazy one, where most people fit three weeks of clubbing into three nights. Clubland always seems to have a hangover the weekend after with people opting to stay at home to either conserve what little cash or sanity they have left. This in turn leaves only the hardened (or even foolhardy) ravers free reign on the clubs. With this in mind and HHA still ringing in my ears, I made my way down, with a friend, to Brixton and The Fridge for June’s instalment of Bedlam. To my disappointment we got into the club quite late, around 11 and missed most of Sharkboy’s set. Greg Ferguson’s sound is instantly recognisable to anyone that has bought any of the many remixes and bootlegs he has produced. Accessible, uplifting hard trance and NRG that, from the snippet I heard, made a perfect start to the night. But by the time I had dispensed with the extra layers and got back to the dance floor his set was over I’ll have to keep my eye out for him in the future. At 11:30 the night really kicked off in style. Simon Rutherford, resident at Tilt, came on and showed the slowly growing crowd just why he is in demand all over the world. It was almost a greatest hits of hard trance set, playing undisputed classics like “What Ya Got For Me” by Signum, “Never Lost His Hardcore” by NRG, “Insomnia” by Faithless, and personal favourites “Compounded (2004)” by Edge 1 and “Loops And Tings Relooped” by Marco V Vs. Jens. Impressed? Blown away more like. I think my feet nearly fell off I danced so much. Maybe it’s the fact that the music at hard dance nights can be very hard at the moment, that when a DJ comes on and plays a party set like Simon did it sounds all the more sweeter. The hype leading up to the night billed it as the white party with the club dressed in white and not only the Cyberkitten DJs going head to head with Bedlam DJs in room 2 but also both crews dancers battling it out on stage in the main room. But could they pull it off? It really says something when great production values are put into a night and the party can carry the hype. The effort then put into this edition was nothing less than stunning. The main dance floor was decked out with white robes covered in twinkling lights. From the ceiling hung massive white spiky balls. The Bedlam dancers were completely co-ordinated and looking stunning all in white, as were many of the eager clubbers. In addition to all that, bubbles rained down from above, glinting in the light and laser show and we even got pyrotechnics exploding on either side of the dance floor in time to the music. Finally the Cyberkitten dancers, all in orange, got their groove on as well. The Fridge is a big club and can look very bare at times, but not tonight. It seems to me with this combination of great music and wicked production, Bedlam has come of age. From 1 to 2 Samson, one of the Bedlam residents, came on to carry on the good time vibe. Playing more great tracks like “Absolution” by Wid and Ben, brand new rework “Shining In Ecstasy” by Barry Diston and “I Need You” by SJ and Baby Doc. By 2 I was starting to think I would never sit down. After playing in room 2 last month with the Milk crew, Roosta progressed to the main stage and banged out some hard house stormers. I had time to hear “Music Is Moving” by Cortina and the Edison Factor remix of “Lock Up” by Zero B before my exertions got the better of me and I had to chill out for a bit. But from what I did see he certainly looked just at home at The Fridge as he does at the legendary 414. After a chat with some of the dancers and other nutters collected in their chill out room, the urge to hear some more music got the better of me and so off I went to catch the start of Ed Real’s set. Now to be honest by this time I wasn’t in any state to be picking out tracks from the set but I do know he played “Red Snapper” by K90. In any case I was having a blinding night sitting on the steps to the stage and taking in the music and the atmosphere. That was until I started to be attacked by various lunatics. Now this was the only down point in the night for me. To the guy who ripped off my hat from my head while I was chilling out just so he could dance with it, why would you do such a thing?? To the girl who wouldn’t take no for an answer when she asked for my glowsticks, why did you have to dig your nails into my arm and scream please at me?? And especially to the guy who couldn’t seem to get it into his head that I didn’t want to dance with him, walk around with him, have him touch my leg, arm, shoulders, ears, head or hands!! Why, oh why?? However on the flip side a VERY BIG THANK YOU to the girl who, around 5 and just when I was feeling exhausted from the dancing and bombardment, without asking, offered me first a cigarette and then a sip of lemonade. Despite the extra Hard House being dished up by Tara Reynolds, I really felt a serene peace in that wordless moment we shared. It’s a shame I didn’t really have a chance to say thank you at the time, so if you are reading this, then trust me, you really turned a quickly declining night around. Playing the last hour and a half, as I said before, Tara Reynolds bashed out some really hard stuff. The highlight of which was an astounding assault on the body with a bassline that quite literally rocked (and vibrated) the main room – wow! I’m glad though I was wearing my ear protectors because god knows how loud it actually was! Still the mood I was in really seemed to fit in with the filthy music being played and right up until the end you could find me going crazy right in the middle of the dance floor (yes I eventually did move off the step I occupied for more than 3 hours ) Apologies to all the DJs who played in room 2 but to be honest I couldn’t get enough of my step and the music being played in the main room and so wasn’t able to come and check you guys out but I did hear that things did go off in there. Bedlam is going from strength to strength. Since they moved from Studio 33 to The Fridge, each successive month has expanded and improved on the last and I’m happy to say this month, despite some hiccups, I had one of the best nights out in a long time.
