Anjunabeats Volume 2... Launch party and album reviews

Reported by josie / Submitted 04-10-04 17:20

There are times in your clubbing life that will stay with you forever. We all have them. For me, those moments include John ‘00’ Fleming at Whitelabel Euphoria, the first time I ever heard Paul van Dyk play, and the first Knowwhere at The Fridge. All big nights. I now have a new one. The Anjunabeats album launch party celebrated the release of Anjunabeats Vol.2, an album featuring tracks written by the label artists, and mixed by Above & Beyond. Everyone expected Above & Beyond to be good, and good they were, but Super8, a Finnish DJ and producer making his UK debut, shone out as a blinding new talent, and one to watch for the future.

First up, and with the difficult job of motivating the small, early crowd was James Grant, who delivered a punchy, thoughtful set. His sound most resembled the album, and his style epitomises what I consider to be the ‘Anjunabeats style. Highlights included the delicately beautiful sound of Above & Beyond pres Tranquillity Base – ‘Surrender’ – altogether too short-lived as the closing track on the album, and the darkly moody Endre – ‘I Kill For You’. This follows track one on the album – Smith & Pledger’s Forever, perhaps a rather understated tune to use as the opening number. Lastly, big up to James for knocking out Tilt – ‘The World Doesn’t Know’, a hyper, trippy track I’ve been coveting for a while.

Star of the show, however, without a shadow of a doubt, was Super8, who seriously played one of the best trance sets I’ve ever heard. He has a phenomenal talent for maintaining energy and variety without a moment’s let-up. I’ve don’t think I’ve ever seen a roomful of nicely dressed men go quite so crazy. Every single track he played was perfectly placed and spacey as all hell, including such storming trance moments as ‘Find’ from Ridgewalkers featuring El, and his own track Cre8. Best of all though was Young Parisians featuring Ben Lost – ‘Jump the Next Train’, which pretty much saw the place go into orbit. If this track, and Super8 aren’t on their way to the top, I’ll eat every hat in Selfridges. Remember, you saw it here first.

Paavo held the fort for Above & Beyond, and produced a perfectly structured set, building up through a low key remix of Oceanlab – ‘Satellite’ to emotional, driving tracks like Sander van Doorn’s 'Dark Roast', Vercetti’s Skinner from the colossal Lange label, Delirium – ‘Silence’, and the big, distorted sound of 'Gravity' by P.O.S. No Chakra’s ‘Home’, and unfortunately not the Gabriel & Dresden mix of ‘No One on Earth’ – for me the spine-tingling highpoint of the album, but I guess you can’t have everything.

The choice of material throughout the night was among the best I’ve ever heard. They seem to have made a deliberate attempt not to play anything made popular by anyone else. All the Anjunabeats DJs also have a definite style – spacey, wide-ranging tonally, and compelling. Mixing is neat and low-key, with little hint as to what’s coming next. It has got to be said that none of them are particularly flamboyant characters. In fact if truth be told, they’re a tiny bit geeky, but then I guess that’s a good thing, otherwise they wouldn’t know what to do with all those knobs and dials would they? There wasn’t much in the way of vinyl going on at Turnmills, CDs and laptops being much more in evidence. This necessarily cuts down the amount of movement on the DJ’s part, adding to the somewhat restrained image they project.

Aalto (Super8 and Paavo)

For those to whom the name Above & Beyond means the drama and emotion of tracks like Satellite and their classic remix of Chakra’s Home, the album may at first appear quite low key, even repressed, but stick with it. Even the power of those show-stopping tracks is an understated one. Get a couple of drinks down you (or whatever), rack it up loud, and you’ll see what I mean. ‘I’d say the style is uplifting, euphoric and positive, but it’s also fairly banging stuff, for example Aalto’s is at the harder end of what we do. Vol. 1 was like ‘the best of Anjunabeats as a label’, but with Vol. 2 we really spent time to make it work as an hour of music. A lot of compilation albums are just all the latest hits and we really didn’t want to make anything like that – it’s much more an artist album.’ – Paavo, of Above & Beyond.

The album is a perfect example of how dance music has developed recently. The whole drama-queen style, like Bossanova’s ‘Stonecold’, much as we love it, is sooo over. A big trance track these days is full of the power that dance music can’t live without, but it’s a balanced, channelled energy, and I think we’re better off for it.

I’m afraid I didn’t stay for Smith & Pledger. Those of us with dull day jobs can’t shmooze in clubs until 3am. Anyway - if you only pay attention to one feature I write - buy this album, and take every opportunity to see Super8 and the other Anjunabeats DJs.

Haven't bought the album yet but great review and a great party. Agree that Super8 played the set of the night - he played a blinder! Smith & Pledger were OK but a bit techy for me. Overall a wicked night... and on a school night as well!

I said 'much as we love it' Oliver. I still enjoy those tracks when they get played... just don't think they'll get written much (if any) more

I have to agree with Josie on this one. The drama-queen style is great (perhaps classic), but no longer at the cutting edge.
