The insignificant Others: Preview to UP^^ at the Ministry of Sound

The insignificant Others are one of the hottest properties in dance music right now. With their third single, 'Use My X'/ 'Keep The Noize Down', released by Skyline Records in a couple of weeks and their own night called Keep The Noize Down launching at The Key on Friday, October 22nd, these boys have properly got it going on. In fact, Pete Tong played 'Use My X' on his show last week! The London-based DJ/producer duo of Dave Robinson and Nick McCall have already made quite a name for themselves with their first two singles, one of which has licensed to Groove Armada's 'Doing It After Dark Vol. 1' mix album, and have been interviewed in iDJ magazine. On the DJ front they've been pretty busy recently playing at The Gallery, The Key, the Rhythm Factory and the Progress Bar, as well as rockin' the house up in Manchester. Catch them this Saturday at UP^^ at the Ministry of Sound where they'll giving us a taste of what they're all about. Tell us a little bit about the insignificant Others – how did you first met?
Nick: The insignificant Others are Nick McCall and Dave Robinson. We have known each other for nearly ten years now, after meeting at Salford University on a sound engineering course in 1995 and instantly hit it off, having both identical and very different personalities at the same time. I was really into the studio/production side of things, while Dave came from a DJ background.
You’re being tipped as one of the hottest young producers in house music, so what makes you tick?
Nick: I’m in my element when we’re working in the studio. There is nothing like when a track just ‘works’ - there’s a certain chemistry that happens when we’re both in there. When we’re DJing, the buzz of dropping your own tracks and watching the dancefloor go nuts is just amazing! For me that’s what it’s all about. You feel like you’ve made people happy even if it’s just for a few hours.
How does it work when there in the studio together?
Dave: We instantly know when we’re doing something right in the studio. For example we could be working on an embryo of a track and one of us might just tweak something a tiny amount to the sound of the other going ‘did you just fukin’ hear that? Is it just me or is that pretty fukin’ alright?!’ Then it’s a case of building on that moment.
Where you’ve been playing out recently?
Nick: We’ve been pretty busy this year. We had a couple of great gigs earlier this year in Germany and Portugal. The highlights for us would have to be the MTV Mash tour finale in Lisbon and Going Places Best of British @ The Gallery. We’re pretty busy over the next couple of months playing in London.
Tell us a bit about your DJ style.
Dave: Our DJ style tends to reflect our productions - anything ranging from sexy, laid-back grooves to full-on dirty-house. The main thing is, it’s got to be funky / groovy, it’s got to get people dancing (not just chin-stroking)… not necessarily soulful, but the music has to have ‘soul’. We have such a wide ranged – music taste and different musical backgrounds so it can be pretty much anything!
How does it work as a DJ duo?
Dave: Practically speaking, we don’t have a ‘you do one hour, then my turn’ game plan. We usually just have a rough idea of a first tune and then off we go…watch the dancefloor and see what happens. If I want to put one on, I put one on etc. How can you pre-plan a set and guarantee it will work if you haven’t yet seen or felt the vibe? You might as well just send a mix CD by courier over to the club with a note attached saying ‘Just press play at midnight’!
Nick: The duo thing works really well I think - two heads are better than one! Because Dave and I are mates, having a close professional relationship is easy. Although we have slightly different taste, we’re generally into the same things and have similar musical ideas. When we’re out DJing in a club or working in the studio it’s almost like we can second guess each other because we just “know” where we want to take things.
Tell us about the kind of set you’ll be playing at UP^^ at Ministry of Sound on Saturday.
Dave: It’s been a dream of ours to play at the Ministry of Sound, so we’re really looking forward to it. We’re thinking… dirty, filthy, funky ass-shakers, and we’ll of course be road testing some of our own brand new, as yet unreleased tracks, along with a couple of cheeky little things we’ve been working on!
How you hooked up with Skyline Records?
Nick: We hooked up with Skyline at the beginning of 2003. We basically sent a 4-track demo out to loads of labels and we got quite a bit of interest and feedback. One of the calls was from Tim Binns and after a meeting at the Skyline offices and a long chat we decided that Skyline was the one. They were really feeling what we were doing and we knew they would allow us to do what we wanted to do and have creative control.
Tell us about your releases so far.
Dave: Our first track ‘It’s Me’ began life as part of a 4-track demo CD that we put together to distribute to as many record labels as we could to try and accomplish our original goal – get it out there on vinyl. We had some immediate interest, and then a friend recommended we pass it on to Tim at Skyline. He had a listen, and offered put it out on 12” last September and interest just grew from there – it had excellent feedback & reviews, eventually finding it’s way on to Groove Armada’s new ‘Doin’ It After Dark’ mix CD! Next up was the ‘Milk’ EP released in April, plus there’s a cheeky Jaz-Z bootleg we’ve done floating around
And what’s coming up next?
Our next single, ‘Use My X’/’Keep The Noize Down’ will be coming out in October. Expect a couple of remixes too with Harold Heath’s ‘Long Relationships’ and ‘Cheza’ by Khaya featuring Mapumba There will probably be an insignificant Others mix / compilation album in the pipeline too!
What's next for you guys, both productions and DJing - any tricks up your sleeves?
Nick: We’ve messed around with introducing laptops, controllers, MP3 mixing software and live percussion into our DJ sets - but eventually we’d really like to take our music out to the live stage - having a live band in addition to all our kit to re-create what we have on our records.
Dave: Get better! – although we are really proud of our work so far, there is always room for improvement in terms of production techniques and ideas.

A night so good it almost got it's residents arrested in Ibiza! This month should be even more eventful as they'll be joined in the baby box by UP^^ with a little help from Sedition DJs and those Moochin' boys.
