TranceGeneration @ The Soundshaft... Reviewed

It’s official. TranceGeneration has edged into the lead as my favourite London trance promotion. The December event was one of the best nights out I’ve had recently, and believe me, I’ve had a lot. The Soundshaft looked great, every set was a winner, and that classic, electric TG atmosphere gripped everyone and wouldn't let go.

A fantastic set from resident Ehren Stowers was going on when we arrived, with his spacey, uplifting sound. Some great tunes as well, including the best new tracks I heard all night - ‘Echoing Waves’ from Sonar Methods, and Sunblind’s ‘Believe’ – two brilliant euphoric, rushy tracks. In answer to the question, ‘Ehren, why aren’t you a bigger name’, he looked exceptionally pleased and muttered something about not having been DJing for very long. Promoters, take note, book him! He’s ace! And he’d be so chuffed to be asked he’d probably do it for a few pints and a lift home. OBVIOUSLY that’s a joke.

Ehren was followed by Simon Patterson, aka producer Dogzilla, resident with premiere league event Serious, and a man who lately seems to be making a red hot name for himself. In the past, this reviewer has said somewhat negative things about Simon (ahem). Consider them officially and wholly retracted. He absolutely rocked the place, no two ways about it. He kicked off at a slightly slow pace, but very quickly picked it up, and then played a set of tuff, uncompromising, irresistible trance. Some huge tunes as well, like Nick Lunn & Yomc’s ‘Energise’, Kuffdam & Plant’s ‘Summer Dream’, the classic ‘Synaesthesia‘, and his own dark, monster track ‘Your Eyes’. If you haven’t heard this yet, buy it. It’s simply one of the best tunes around at the moment.

Simon’s was universally agreed to be the set of the night, although he didn’t seem to agree, dismissing it afterwards as ‘too trancey’. Let’s get one thing straight right now. There is no such thing as ‘too trancey’, just like there’s no such thing as ‘too much like Brad Pitt’, or ‘too much money in your bank account’. Anyway, he’s playing at Serious at The Cross this weekend, alongside Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell and Anne Savage, so let’s see what that turns up.

Next up was a fine set from resident Gary Ramsden, and the best in the way of big classic tunes. Anthem after anthem, like Thrillseekers’ ‘New Life’, the storming ‘Connective‘ from Nu NRG, beautiful, old-school tune 'Diving', and ATN – ‘Miss A Day’. This last, whilst a great track, is starting to sound a bit dated, which just goes to show how many great new tracks are being released all the time. Best of all, Gary played the absolute anthem ‘Jump The Next Train’ featuring the vocals of Ben Lost, a trance DJ in his own right. The whole place absolutely erupted when the track was played, and Gary was absurdly pleased to hear it after his set.

Fourth blinding set in a row came from heavyweight producer Lange, who played just the best, craziest trance. His producing experience really shows as well – he is a true artist with a real understanding of sound, and he’s always busy behind the decks, adjusting and tweaking. Fascinating to watch, albeit a bit difficult to make conversation with him. He’s also shorter than I imagined, but then there’s nothing wrong with that.

Last up were Smith & Pledger, relative youngsters but already establishing a solid reputation for themselves both DJing and producing. They played with a very sexy, dark, dubby sound but surprisingly took the pace down quite a bit… maybe even too much. It perhaps wasn’t the best idea to go and tell them to play faster, and quite rightly they didn’t take a blind bit of notice. It will serve me right if they comment on my grammar.

The Soundshaft looked the best it ever has as well, with four incredible lazers and great big powerful white lights that flashed on and practically drilled a hole in the back of your retina. All good, clean fun. I’ve also clearly been going clubbing waaay too much recently, as I recognised almost every face. The Funky room never gets as much attention as the main room as these events, but it’s nevertheless extremely welcome to throw yourself down on those sofas after dancing for several hours. All in all, a fantastic night, and lucky London to have TG. Best of all, the event goes monthly next year so things look set to be even better in 2005.

I thought this was the least good of the TG's I'd been to but then the two previously would've been hard to live up to. ATN- Miss A Day - dated? Hmmm, I'd have to say bollox to that, it's a top tune! I agree about Smith & Pledger - I went up to what I thought was the last DJ about to tell him to take the pace up. Fortunately I asked his name first only to realise I was talking to Mark Pledger, Oops! So I went and got a drink instead.

It was a great night. For me the best TG so far. Pure quality. I do agree that the pace did drop at the end. Nevertheless, great night and another ACE review. More of everything please!
