Serious @ The Cross ... Reviewed

Reported by josie / Submitted 05-01-05 09:13

‘We’ll have December off clubbing’, I said airily a few weeks ago. Hmm, that went well then. At the last count, clubbing and its associated unhealthiness have occupied eleven out of the last thirteen weekends, not to mention six all-nighters in eight days in Ibiza this summer. I don't think I've seen a single episode of this series of Max & Paddy. So what tempted this clubber out into the rain this month? Paradise City 001 at The Alexandra Palace, Trance Generation at The Soundshaft, and Serious at The Cross… and all three have been cracking nights.

It’s been an age since I last (and first) went to The Cross – Fiction about two years ago, way back in the day. One thing certainly hasn’t changed – it’s probably the best looking London venue that’s still a ‘real’ club. Cute arch after cute arch, arty plants and furniture, and interesting objets to look at. Best of all, the staff are decent, normal people, rather than the particularly bad-tempered results of a Mussolini - Jennifer Lopez love tryst.

DJing when we arrived was John Askew – resident at Turnmills long-standing Friday night party The Gallery and label boss of both Discover and Kompressed Recordings. His style is a teeny tiny bit sparse and progressive for me, with quite a lot of ‘down time’ but he still played some blinding tracks – Sunblind’s ‘Believe’, and quality trance remixes of Eric Prydz’ ‘Call On Me’, and The Prodigy’s ‘Voodoo People’. Towards the end of his set things got a bit tougher and chunkier, with enthusiastic, positive response from the crowd.

Next up was Eddie Halliwell, who is, incidentally, adorable. You want to wrap him in a duvet and take him home. He’s perhaps better known, however, for his technical expertise, and in fact is working alongside audio manufacturer Pioneer in developing the next generation of DJ technology... whatever that means. He kicked off with a very very hard sound that literally bordered on techno. He might be technically brilliant, but it didn’t go down all that well. After about an hour of everyone looking good-natured but a bit bemused at all the scratching and squeaking, he admitted defeat and starting belting out the trance. Still quite growly, badboy trance but uplifting all the same. Some classy tunes as well, including a Radiohead – ‘Street Spirit’ remix, Mauro Picotto’s ‘Lizard’, and absolute classics the ‘The Orange Theme’ by Cygnus-X, Nu Nrg’s fabulous track ‘Dreamland’ (simply one of my favourite ever) and ‘Synaesthesia’ from The Thrillseekers.

A lot of the night in fact was not particularly trancey. In an ideal world of course this would attract some form of punishment but sadly it doesn’t. I say sadly as apart from anything else it would make Top Of The Pops a far more interesting viewing experience. There was also quite a lot of sound travel between the rooms, especially if due to the uber-crush you were squeezed out on the fringes. These are minor complaints though, as all in all the evening was a total winner. More up market than say, The Fridge, or Heaven, it was a generally smarter crowd, but still with sufficient properly messy people to make you feel better about yourself. The atmosphere was in fact fantastic, everyone solely there for the music and to have a good time.

Following on from Eddie came Judge Jules. I really want to hate the Judge – basically just a petulant reaction to his nice fat job at Radio 1 and his calculatedly irritating appearance. Did you know he claims to wear those hideous swirly T-shirts so he can 'be seen' up in the DJ box? Well Jules, a friendly word of advice… a naked Roy Hattersley draped in fairy lights could 'be seen’ but it don’t mean you’d want to look at him. Anyway... I want to hate him and slate him, but I can’t. I reluctantly loved him in Ibiza and in fact Judgement Sunday won the 2004 Mixmag award for best trance night on the island. I guess – to repeat myself – the big names are the big names for a reason. He proved this again with an exciting, electro-esque set. The pace dropped off fractionally at times, but otherwise it was class all the way. Less melodic and euphoric than when I saw him at Judgement Sunday, and (a lot) less commercial and user-friendly than his radio 1 show, but no complaints from me. One very very dodgy bit of beat matching... but I guess no one's perfect. I bet Eddie Halliwell laughed himself sick.

Judge Jules is also actually quite sweet. He was delighted to sign a flyer and spent quite a bit of time doing it very carefully with a nice feltpen. You can imagine him practising in his kitchen when everyone else is out (God I’m a bitch). Anyway, best track of the set was a brilliant hard remix of Delerium's 'Silence'. The Judge saved the best til last as well, the final half hour of his set was awesome - driving and intense.

Serious resident Simon Patterson, aka Dogzilla, finished the night with a back-to-back set versus Adam Pryor, one of three twenty-somethings behind production outfit CERN, and their huge, PVD-hammered track 'The Message'. Simon's own monster track 'Your Eyes' and his new track 'Dark Side Of The Moon', which is easily as good as 'Your Eyes' if not better, provoked absolute bedlam among the crowd. By far these two were the most enthusiastic behind the decks, jumping up and down and really getting into it... too young to have got completely blase I suppose.

All in all then, not quite what was expected... but a resounding success all the same. Both January and February will see Serious being held again at The Cross, so plenty of opportunity to pay them a visit and check it out for yourselves.

Fantastic review. It was a great night - bit hard for me, but sometimes thats exactly what you need! The judges T-shirt was especailly rank, AND I bet he does practice his signature.

Absolutely awesome night, the best in the country in my opinion, held at London's top venue. Your right... Simon and Adam took the roof off at the end, and Jules does practice his signature... not in his house, but to thousands of clubbers wanting it each wknd!!

Brilliant review - keep them coming Josie! Thumbs up

This echoes a review Shaun Rowland did for Serious some time last year (check it out in the archive) and similarly it was a night that outdid all our expectations by a long shot and left us all in no doubt that Serious is really one of the best nights in London! Shocked If you haven't been, and you like trance even a little bit, or ever have done then for pete's sake make a date to check it out, it really will blow you away and restore your faith in trance! Big grin Thumbs up

In another repeat of Josie, I was amazed to discover that Judge Jules really can rock it. Blush We were as gutted as well! Laughs out loud Thumbs up

From: Steve Prince on 14th Jan 2005 16:03.44
simon patterson well all ways rocks it

From: Alix on 21st Jan 2005 09:49.22
Tanya - um, no... a review is someone's personal interpretation, experience and opinion of an event. If Josie spent her time in the trance room it's still a review isn't it and a damn good one too! Thumbs up
