"Diary of a DJ Weekend" & Brief Interview with DJ, Producer and A&R Man Simon Eve

Reported by Simon Eve & EmmaHardware / Submitted 18-01-05 17:19

Simon Eve is probably one of the most prominent and well-recognised names within the Hard Dance community, for both his undeniable talent in the studio, behind the decks and as A&R man extraordinaire! His countless banging hard dance stormers continually make it on to every single top Hard Dance compilation that’s going - including most of the Lashed and Extreme Euphoria series.

This man’s ability to produce dance floor wrecker after dance floor wrecker is second to none – and with a string of collaborations under his belt that includes a who’s who of Hard Dance you will find his tunes on the harder end of all record shelves from HMV to Mad.

2005 has started off with a vengeance for Simon Eve. Having A&Rd the new Lashed cd, as well as Infected Mushroom's up and coming release, there seems to be no end to this man’s talent and passion for the scene.

I caught up with Simon after he had been rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème of Hard Dance at the Lashed CD advert shoot to ask him a few questions and find out just what goes on in the typical weekend of an A&R man, DJ, producer and record label owner - a hell of a lot of multitasking and time management I expect!

Friday 3 December 2004 - Resist A&R - Lashed CD release TV ad shoot Pt 1 - Air in Birmingham

We're hitting top gear getting the Lisa Lashes’ CD 'Lashed' into action! It's been a hectic week of meetings, clearing tracks, photoshoots but finally everything is coming together a storm!

Today we’re shooting the TV ad for the Lashed CD at Air in Birmingham. We've got BK, Paul Glazby, Ingo, Nick Rafferty, Ilogik and Charlotte Birch as extras for the 'backstage with Lisa' scenes, alongside models and 'professional female dancers' from Birmingham. The brief was to have 30 people being filmed in the VIP room at Air pretending to be backstage and partying with Lisa before one of her gigs. We had to get all 30 people to Birmingham, organise make-up, lighting and direction for the shoot, aiming to get several hours of filming done before the club opened for Polysexual / Lashed later that night.

The day didn't get off to the best of starts with people missing the 10am start time due to fog and junction closures on the motorway, and upon arriving late myself, the make-up girls and stylist immediately grabbed me to demand a 6ft mirror, spotlights, clothes rail and a steamer for the clothes. Errr... thanks for the advance warning!

Thankfully the Air nightclub had a plentiful supply of spotlights, and I borrowed a clothes rail from the cloakroom... but as for a 6ft mirror and clothes steamer - where do you find those in Digbeth at 11:15am?! After bribing a couple of sales staff I managed to borrow the items from local designer clothes shops for the day. I certainly don't remember this kind of thing being in my job description!

Back in the club we had Lisa Lashes doing an interview with the Independent while the others were getting make-up and wardrobe changes done. Who'd have thought we'd see hard dance getting a write up in a broadsheet newspaper?! Straight after the Independent interview Mixmag arrived for a quick interview and to stay for the afternoon to take photos of the film session. It's pretty much non-stop for Lisa today, much as it is for me. By now we're running late, but eventually start filming. Obviously we needed to create a party atmosphere, so Roman spins some tunes on the decks and we fetch some drinks for the DJs and models to crack open and get into the party spirit.

We work our way through many scenes, and all the time I have to keep on my toes to help Steve the cameraman, while at the same time letting the eager Mixmag photographer get in on the action and re-arrange the cast for his shots, while also bossing the extras around, checking no drinks and cigarrettes were in view between shots (due to advertising regulations), and to try and hurry things along to get the filming finished before the club opens to the public. Thankfully we finished just in time at around 8pm. There's a last opportunity to go through any final track listing additions with Lisa before she records her CD mixes next week, and I also take the opportunity to swap some new studio productions with BK - my remix of 'Access' for his new dub mix of 'Playing With Knives'?

Everybody goes home happy! Well, not just yet anyway - after a hard days work I didnt' feel like hitting the motorway again just yet, so I grabbed some food and met up with Lisa's boyfriend A-Star for his set at 10pm. He played an excellent warm up set, not banging it too early and building up the groove perfectly for BK to take over. Before long I realised it was nearly 2am and I had to be up again early Saturday morning - time to hit the road back to London with a crate of Red Bull...

Saturday 4 December 2004 - Does It Get Any More Hectic Than This?

No rest for the wicked, up at 8:45 after four hours sleep. Not the ideal preparation for the hectic day ahead.

First up are two label meetings – why on earth Saturday morning?! Well, the Israeli psy-trance kings are in town for Antiworld's Indoor Festival at Alexandra Palace that night, with a tip top line up including Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Lab4, Nuw Idol, me and many more! First up I meet with BNE who look after Infected Mushroom - I signed their 'I M The Supervisor' album to Resist a couple of months ago so it was time for an update on sales and press on our release, and after a long week and only four hours sleep I was glad to have Tom Jenkins from Cypher Press with me to help me through the meeting!

It was good to meet the BNE crew face to face and to formulate some interesting concepts for the next 18 months. Next up was a meeting with Eyal Yankovich, Astrix's manager from HOMmega, who was also in town for the Ally Pally gig. We managed to thrash out a deal for an Astrix mix compilation over lunch. Ahh, striking deals over lunch - far more like the A&R work I know and love compared to finding mirrors and steamers in Digbeth 24 hours earlier! Still, no time to relax, as we both need to prepare for the event at Alexandra Palace.

I head down to DMF's studio in south east London so we can finish off our latest collaboration 'Take A Chance On Yourself'. It's a rampaging hard dance number ear-marked for my Recharge label, and we rework the main sound and wrap-up the edits and EQ changes in double quick time so I can give the tune a road test later in my set at Antiworld.

I head back to north London and a pre-arranged birthday dinner with some close friends, as although my birthday isn't until the next day, I figured that planning a dinner the day after the biggest night in London's hard dance clubbing calendar probably wasn't a good idea! We create some havoc in a pizza restaurant in Muswell Hill - staggering distance from Ally Pally - and then head down to the venue on foot.

I'm DJing in the Goodgreef hard dance arena and am curious to find out how this bold event would go down with the public and how it would work in such a large venue. No need for concern there though, as once inside we find the venue superbly laid out and at near capacity. Much as it's tempting to get out and party with the crowd I decide to keep my head straight before my DJ set, and it provides a good opportunity to catch up with some of the artists backstage as I bump into Infected Mushroom, Chris Liberator and Michel De Hey, as well as the legendary MC Marxman from Dance Valley fame to swap some industry news and gossip from around the globe.

I hit the decks at around 2:30am after Shan from Goodgreef, and the hard dance arena is still busy despite the night's biggest headliners, Infected Mushroom, about to go on stage in the Psygate arena. Thankfully the set-up on stage is spot on (it so often isn't for one-off events!), and I soon pick up the pace with some hard dance monsters. My new collaboration with DMF 'Take A Chance On Yourself' sounds great on the big soundsystem and my remix of DJ Misjah & Tim 'Access' also does the business. Other biggies for me on the night include Supefast Oz 'Robocock', Captain Tinrib & Sol Ray 'Attack Of The 50ft DJ' and Ingo vs Danny Gilligan 'Now Is The Time'.

I hand over to Alex Kidd at around 3:30, and can now finally join in the party and fun and games out on the dancefloor. There's just enough time to catch the last 10 minutes of Infected Mushroom's live set, and a group of us then dash in and out of the three main arenas for the rest of the night trying to catch as many headliners as we can. The end of the night is a bit of a blur...

Sunday 6th December...

I eventually wake up late on Sunday afternoon, at first not sure exactly what day it is. And then I remember, it's my birthday today - another year older and I certainly feel it after the week I've had!! Still, no chance for a break, as I'm already late with my hard dance reviews for DJ Magazine, so I spend the evening in front of the PC listening to the contents of my postbag and trying to remember how to engage my brain. Very rock 'n' roll...

Your Recharge Label showcases the most cutting edge of Hard Dance tuneage, and with over 25 releases under the label’s belt you must be feeling pretty excited about 2005. Can you give us a sneaky peek as to what is in store for Recharge next year?

First of all Recharge is having a makeover with a new sleeve design to give the label a fresh look for 2005. On the music front we kick off the year with a two track EP by myself and DMF ‘Technology’ & ‘Take A Chance On Yourself’, followed by Mark Maitland’s Recharge debut ‘Get Up’ and a collaboration project with Dynamic Intervention to follow. There’ll also be a limited edition remix EP of some Recharge favourites, plus plans are afoot for Recharge to be involved in a CD compilation project later in the year.

You recently played at Antiworld, when the clubbing community took over Alexandra Palace – has this been your best gig to date? If not what has been the most memorable?

Antiworld at Alexandra Palace was certainly a very special occasion, and a real landmark event for London. It’s hard to pick just one event as the most memorable, but other definite contenders would be the Dance Valley and Impulz Festivals in Holland where the hard dance arenas held over 10,000 people alone. Also out there amongst the best DJing experiences were playing to the Aussie nutters at System 6 in St Paul’s Church in Adelaide as the sun came up through the stained glass windows, or the hi tech hedonism at Velfarre in Tokyo where the fanatical locals mix with the US Navy (off duty of course!) and western hostesses out on the dancefloor.

Having played alongside such legends as Tony De Vit, Carl Cox and John ‘OO’ Fleming – who still inspires you today?

Carl Cox still stands out – he’s got more DJ talent in his little finger than most DJs have got in their entire body, and he can build a set of minimal techno tunes into an inspired, hypnotic groove. In hard dance circles Pete Wardman still takes some beating for innovation and superb mixing skills.

You must get sent loads of promos in the post asking for your feedback – how do you manage to separate the cracking tracks from the not so great ones?

In about 5 seconds! Honestly, I get sent about 50-70 new tracks every week, so there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to listen to everything in as much detail as I’d like. A quick skip through each track will quickly identify if the production quality is up to scratch or not, and bottom line is that if the overall sound isn’t good, then it won’t get played out, as it will sound weak if played alongside the latest BK production etc. Once I’ve narrowed my selection down I then go through the good ones in more detail again to listen to the ideas in the arrangement to see which will make a good dancefloor tracks.

Which producers do you tip for the top in 2005?

Producers: I think Tik Tok, Alf Bamford (Technikal) and MDA & Spherical have shown a lot of promise so far – I’m sure they’ll go from strength to strength in 2005. I’ve also been hearing some really good material from Mark Maitland, Mark Sherry and a Canadian producer Roddi Style, so hopefully these guys will get some decent breaks and some more exposure.

Having collaborated and remixed some great Hard Dance tunes over the years – which is your favourite and still sits in your record box today?

It’s quite recent one, but I think I’ll still be playing my 2004 remix of Antic ‘The Ultimate’ in a few years time as I still love the original mix back from 1994. It’s just one of those infectious tunes that you never seem to get bored of. Oh, and it’s filthy as f*** too!

You are soon to be releasing your remix of the classic tune DJ Misjah & Tim 'Access' on Tripoli Trax. I can remember the first time I heard the BK remix of this tune – what memories does it have for you?

One word – Trade. I remember Tony De Vit banging out the original X-Trax version in Turnmills about 10 years ago and hearing it for the first time was just amazing as nobody had ever made a tune like that before. It was devilishly hard and scary but absolutely fantastic at the same time!

Known for being a musically very flexible DJ – how would you describe your DJing style today?

“Hard Edged Dance” as an all-encompassing category. It can be funky, trance or techno based, but it’s gotta have balls to it!

In the past couple of years you have taken your top level involvement in the hard house and trance scenes further still, becoming the hard dance writer and reviewer for DJ Magazine and taking up full time A&R roles, first at the Eve Records Group, and then onto React Music and currently Resist Music where you work with the leading names in dance on a daily basis on various CD projects. What else is in store for you in 2005 – where do you see yourself in say ten years time?

Me in ten years time – maybe in rehab?! I think it’s fair to say that I’ve got my work cut out with my various jobs, so I don’t think there’s any hours left in the day to add too much more to my hectic schedule this year! However, I’ll definitely be focussing more on my own studio productions and getting more releases out in 2005. In the months ahead I’ve got a remix of K90 ‘Super Space’, DJ Misjah & Tim ‘Access’ and Mark Maitland ‘Get Up’ coming out, plus collaboration projects with DMF, Dynamic Intervention and Scott Mac on various labels.
