A Tasty foursome – interview with Tasty resident djs Billy Daniel Bunter, Jon Doe, Kutski & Roosta

Reported by Nige N / Submitted 03-06-05 14:44

In late 2001 a party started at the London venue of Crash that would change clubbing in the capital forever. Over the next 3 and a bit years it would host a multitude of events across some of the most prestigious dance venues with hundreds of performances from djs, MCs and live PAs before finding its spiritual home at Brixton’s Mass club.

Now on Saturday 11 June Tasty returns once more to Mass to bring you a glittering array of star djs and MCs across the hard dance spectrum. It will also see the birth of a new concept in hard dance clubbing with a look back to yester year in the shape of its pure anthems zone.

We talk to the Tasty residents, Billy Daniel Bunter, Jon Doe aka CLSM, Kutski and Roosta on their experiences and feelings about Tasty over the last few years.

What was the original inspiration behind starting the Tasty parties?

Bunter: The 1st Tasty was set up to promote an album me & Jon mixed. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I got the promoter bug and decided to make it more then a 1 off. The 1st year was a massive buzz, but lost shit loads of money, the 2nd year I put every thing into practice I had learned in the 1st year, and the past year and a half I have run the events with both passion and a level head and they have been all the better for it.

How did you all get to know each other?

Bunter: Fuck this is gonna take a minute or 2! My first encounter with Jon Doe was about 10 years ago and it was a huge argument over a 303 I had borrowed from the studio he was working in. I didn’t have a clue how to use the 303, I played around with it randomly and a riff come out, it turned out it was pre programmed by Jon. I thought I had made it and put it in my tune. Jon phoned me up looking for a row; I called him a prick and told him to fuck off. Years later I was best man at his wedding and he is one of my closest friends.

Me and Jon was making music for labels like Hard Trax & Too Strong about 1998 and was in the studio one day when Mic Cree aka Dynamic Intervention come in to see us. I asked him what he was up to and he pulled out his “ammo” “OH ER”, out of all the tracks he played me he had a killer he had done with Roosta called 414 All. I signed it straight away, set up a meeting with Roosta and he has been stuck with me ever since. We hit it off from day 1, he’s like me, speaks his mind, and sees every thing as it really is.

In the early days of running Honey pot Kutski used to buy all the Honeypot merchandise from us, and used to send in his new demos every month. Not only was he persistent, but in the space of 18 months I watched him go from having the potential to be one of the most gifted dance music djs we have ever seen to actually becoming that dj. The thing that has impressed me more then any thing about Kutski is his understanding of all music; we can talk on the phone for hours about music in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Most hard dance djs I come across think music begins and ends with hard house, to be a true dj you need to know your history, and that’s what struck up a great friendship between me & Kutski, an understanding of music.

Kutski: Big Bill phoned me up one day out of the blue and told me he’d been listening to all the CDs I’d been sending him and really liked them, and he wanted to put me on in the main room at Tasty!! What a mad day that was I tell thee!!

After I got to know Bunter well, he hooked me up with Roosta who invited me to his studio to do a track! Since then Roosta’s helped me shit loads with my production!

Bunter also introduced me to Jon at Tasty, and he asked me to do some scratching on a couple of his live shows. Since then he’s been the key factor in helping me break through into the scene!!

Roosta: In the studio doing what we all love and having a ball whilst doing it!

Jon Doe: Bunter stole an acid line and put it on GBT 17, ever since we did loads of tracks and worked together in an attempt to sort out our relationship, it didn’t work. Roosta was around on the London scene and producing for Honeypot and Kutski used to send in demo cds and ended up scratching at hardcore and hard house PAs for me.

All 4 of you are very adaptable as djs. How much of an advantage is it that you can all play across the different rooms at Tasty?

Bunter: It’s great fun more then any thing else, and as Tasty is where we are all residents I think it’s the perfect opportunity to show off our musical knowledge. For me all the big events double me up on sets, in Raindance’s case they can have me play up to 4 times a night, so why not do it at my own event. To all the haters who don’t get it, I’m not greedy, I’m not jumping on bandwagons, it is all styles of music that I have lived and breathed, played from day one, helped push to where those styles have got to today, and play it all with passion & knowledge. After 16 odd years it feels good to be so actively involved and successful in such a wide variety of scenes, variety is the spice of life, and it’s great to play to so many age groups and people with different life styles week in week out.

Kutski: I’d imagine it’s a big advantage to Bunter, because he has 4 solid djs, including himself, that he can use in lots of different ways (ohh err!)

Jon Doe: It makes things more fun, Bunter gets us cheaper and also has us doing sets in exchange for not having us beaten up, it’s like the lunch money thing at school.

Your parties constantly sell out and are always met with great anticipation. Why don’t you put on more events when you obviously have such a loyal following?

Bunter: I want to keep Tasty special, and not abuse the following we have built up. There are too many events out there that are doing it for the sake of fitting in dates to fill up a yearly wall planner. That’s not what I want to do, I put on a party because I want to, not because I have to, and it shows in the magic of the night. People always talk about Tasty having its own style and a vibe all of its own, and that’s created by not getting greedy with what we have got, and spending time on making it genuinely different to the rest. I come across so many promoters who call their party a “brand” and I’m not down with that mentality of Tasty being a “brand” and fitting it in to a competitive schedule. Tasty is a “party” and that’s what we shall have when I want put on an event.

Kutski: That’s where the anticipation comes from!!! Everyone loves Christmas, but it would be shit if it was bi-monthly!!

Jon Doe: They are not my panties, I don’t want more.

You have used several venues over the last 3 and a bit years such as Crash, the Fridge and the rocket. However what is it about Mass that suits Tasty so much?

Bunter: I can’t put my finger on it, but Mass suites Tasty down to the ground, it’s an excellent venue with its own style, but it’s very hard to pack out, and that’s what makes it special. We pack it out, with people who are genuinely there for Tasty, and not the hype or “over hype” of the venue.

Kutski: Personally for me, the quirkiness and originality of the venue is second to none, same as Tasty events, so they go hand in hand really!

Jon Doe: Lots of rooms, lots of variety, it makes me rush.

Radio play has always been a big part of the early dance music culture. Now that Kutski has a hard dance/hardcore show on radio 1 and Daniel himself has a show on Pure Dance, what role do you see radio playing in the future of dance music and how do you think this will affect Tasty and other hard dance/hardcore nights?

Bunter: Commercial radio has always been important but always more for the mainstream, same with magazines like MixMag, they support dance music, but not the whole spectrum, and miss so many important aspects and take the safe options time and time again. Pirate radio for me has always had its finger far more on the pulse. Myself and Kutski getting in to radio is very exciting as people get to hear a different aspect of what’s going on instead of the same old options. What effect it will have on Tasty, who knows? Since I have done my radio show I have seen hard house ravers partying to old skool and vice versa and loads of people have said listening to the many styles I play on my show has opened their mind to different music, and that’s a great achievement for me.

Kutski: The exposure of the music to a wider ordinance can only be a good thing for Tasty and all other parties! As for the future… world domination is next! Now we have a foot in the door at Radio One, me and Dan are working on getting the breakfast show, whilst Jon and Roost are pencilled in for the drive time show later in the day!!

Jon Doe: Hard dance has always been misrepresented and still now the balance is way off what happens on the dance floor, in vinyl sales and cd compilations. But when the system gets abused the way it does for genres which have large radio shows with djs playing their own stuff and greed and bias taking over the show you have to see the downsides too! Things will struggle to even out as people in power have generally 'grown up' into more mature forms of dance music. They are all kind of missing the point really!

You have introduced a new zone called pure anthems for your next party. What was the reason for this and what do you think these tunes bring to a party that new ones don’t?

Bunter: I do all my hard dance and hardcore gigs, but I also dj at pretty much every old skool event in the country and with my new radio show Pure Anthems on Pure Dance it just seemed the right move to capture my past. What will it bring to Tasty? A house party atmosphere, but in a club listening to party anthems from the past 17 years that every one can dance and smile to.

Kutski: Everyone loves an anthem from back in the day! Now you can make new memories in the main and hardcore rooms, and re-live old ones in the Pure Anthems Zone!!

What has been your favourite Tasty event to date?

Bunter: They have all been great, but the first ever one at The Crash will always hold a lot of memories for me. It was a huge buzz and introduced me to the hectic world of promoting.

Kutski: I’d have to say Tasty 9 at the Rocket, simply because it was the first Tasty event I played. In fact, the first gig I ever played in London, and the first time I met all the Tasty/ Honeypot crew!!!

Roosta: I know it sounds cheesy but all of 'em! I can't think of a bad tasty and they've all been a bit special in different ways.

Jon Doe: The one where flying Kev saved the day by flyering really hard despite hard competition only to end up drinking too much and blaming everything including Zimbabwe's national debt on Billy Bunter.

Daniel, you have a new album coming out featuring hard dance and hardcore. Why was it important for you to put the 2 styles together?

Bunter: Hard dance to hardcore acceleration Cd 1/Hard dance & Cd2/Hardcore. It’s a reflection of where I am at right now as a dj with my upfront music, I’m very lucky to play at both the biggest hard dance and hardcore nights in the country, and I wanted the cd to represent what I do at all my upfront gigs. I would have loved to have included an old skool cd, but that will be coming after the summer as a separate entity.

Over the last few years the hardcore scene has been on the up. How do you think this has affected the Hard dance scene?

Bunter: In London the hard dance scene is still huge, due to events like Frantic, Wildchild & Tasty knowing what makes people party, but I think around the country hardcore has affected hard dance, and this is down to producers and djs being way too dark and serious with the hard dance they produce and play. I believe clubbers want to have fun and hard dance lost that with the “so called” intelligent music and djs. Enter hardcore, which currently has the main element that originally made hard house big around the country: “FUN.” So it was a natural progression for hardcore to rise again. On the other side of the coin, hardcore is smashing it at the moment, but promoters need to ease up getting on the bandwagon and let it take its course naturally.

Kutski: I think the hard dance scene may have suffered a little as some hard dance heads may have started going to hardcore raves instead, but as Tasty’s got a hardcore room, it hasn’t been an issue here. Many other big hard dance brands are jumping on board now too holding hardcore rooms so I guess the two scenes support each other now!

Jon Doe: Hardcore is part of hard dance, there is always a scene at its peak, hard house, hard trance, hard style, hardcore, it’s a natural progression.

The four of you have worked together on many projects over the years including making tunes and working on live PAs. Do you have any plans to work together on any more productions in the future?

Bunter: Off course, it’s what we do. I have had time out from the studio at the moment due to a hectic dj schedule, radio show, mix album and Tasty, but over the coming months I am having an onslaught with Roosta, Jon & Kutski.

Kutski: No, now I got the Radio One thing thanks to help from the other 3, I’m off on my own, like the Robbie Williams of Tasty’s Take That!!! Hehe… Seriously though, I certainly hope so because I still can’t produce for shit on my ownWink

Roosta, After a bit of time out I’m gaggin' so most definitely.

Jon Doe: Me and Bunter have plans for loads of studio work in the coming months.

Name 1 record each that you are fairly sure will feature in your set(s) at Tasty?

Apart from Tasty where else can we see you playing over the next few weeks?

Bunter: From the top of my head, Slip back in time, Slinky, Rebirth @ Run to the sun (2 sets), Gay Pride, Afters, Blue, Back to the Old Skool, Club Republic, Subsonica (2 sets), Venomous (B2B with Kutski), Tasty (3 sets), Sounds Infected, Vibealite (2 sets), Rain dance (3 sets)

Jon Doe: Run to the Sun in Newquay playing hardcore and hard dance. Friday 3rd in Plymouth, then Sat 4th is a bit hectic with 2 sets at Lakota in Bristol for Subsonica, then off to the Freeformation room at seOne for a crazy back to back session with Bunter. Friday 10th at the Welly Club in Hull before of course Tasty at Mass on the Saturday. One of those really hectic moments, no time to think but I like being hectic, like a crack badger running a betting shop on a bank holiday - did that help?

Bunter: Can I also say that after this Tasty there will only be 2 more this year. The next one being Raindance & Tasty present Bliss @ Heaven Friday 26 August. Also my Radio show is every Saturday from 6pm on Sky Digital channel 890 & www.puredance.co.ukand my album Hard Dance to Hardcore Acceleration is out on Monday June 20th.
