Now after missing out on the launch party of Polysexual South as I was over the road at a far less colourful party than the start of the northern assault on London’s hard dance scene, I booked my ticket and jumped on board for the second round with an eye for getting my ringside seat for this star studded night of musical pleasure, with a lineup that included K90, Anne Savage, Lee Haslam, Hinsley and Simon Rutherford. We were in for a really hot night at the Fridge, London’s most inappropriately named southern club of any stature in London’s hard dance play area. This was Polysexual South and the way I saw it…
I, like many Londoners, don’t club much out of the M25, as this seems like a holiday and I would want to make like a native and stand in a field and point at aeroplanes — or some other out of London experience — but I have heard Polysexual can pack quite a punch when it comes to avin it in a discotech. After finding out the set times, if I wanted to hear Simon Rutherford’s set I had to leave the Guinness and get my skates on.
Simon Rutherford may not be a huge name just yet, but for me he played the best set I heard on the island of Ibiza in 2003 and have always enjoyed him play since, so this evening started with a bang. I hightailed it south of the river and — just my luck — the set up was running late. It’s strange being the first in the queue before it becomes a queue, as people turned up they would insist on asking me, ‘What time does it open?’ ‘Which queue for ticket collection,’ and ‘Is it ok to wear fluffy boots?’ So with the thought of getting a T-shirt printed saying, ‘I don’t know the way to Amarillo’, I decided to find out the type of people I was going to cross-pollinate with on the Fridge’s dance floor this evening.
They came with hope in their eyes for a champion night from our northern legendary hosts of a party. I met brightly dressed brightonights, to jean wearing lovers of beer from Ireland. Polysexual seemed to have attracted a good cross-section of the clubbing populous. It was time for the doors to be opened and to let these party animals run. The Fridge is such a good venue for decoration with all its… well, unnatural lighting and what can seem like a ceiling of disco balls...
...which not only did the promotional team take good advantage of, but, it seemed, so did the DJ as Simon Rutherford started our night of arseshaking to some chunky funky techno beats, but eased off on the bpm, so it didn’t seem like he was hammering the records into your head as you walked straight in the street. It’s never easy for a dj to play first for an empty dance floor but as I’ve seen before, Simon relieved people’s confusion with a blend of tech trance and funky tech that got people joining me on the dance floor. Yes, I was already there as I feel the best place to listen to dance music is on the dance floor.
As the floor filled and the small groups of people began to form a crowd, dj Rutherford had more of a target to hit and had us against the ropes when he played ‘Phantom Manor’. I didn’t want to peak too early so it was time for a trip to the bar to get oiled up.
‘A can of red stripe, please’.
‘No, sorry you can have a bottle of bud in a beaker’.
Sorry it’s been a fridge stamp for me and to pay the same price for less drink in an environmentally unfriendly container is a change for the worse for this venue. But back to the party, as this had far more to offer us than Red Stripe.
As I got back to the dancefloor, dj Ben had kept it hot and more clubbers found their way to the party. All sorts of patterns of party people piled on the main room vibe.
K90 swept into the arena to give us his glittery unique slant on hard dance and so with the joy of being a music giver written all over his face landed a musical upper cut straight onto the dance floor. It was such a lift I asked what the tune was that’d just hit us: ‘Primer (Indulge)’. This set was a great place to be and the whole place agreed and began to lift the roof. If you wasn’t feeling the sway then you must’ve been really high and when the giant mushroom appeared I even saw the dj check his drink to see if anyone had popped something into it. This was fun of the highest order!
By the time dj Hinsley was up the club was as full as it was going to get and as he played what seemed like Michael Jackson remix after another and that, coupled with the way the dance floor had heated up and the number of unfamiliar tracks, it was time for a wander…
The Fridge is not a big venue but is a nice place to wander around, and this was a good night, with people making the effort to remain colourful and full of Poly’s party. Back into the main arena, Amber D was pounding out hard arse house and showed why she’s a northern star.
Lee Haslam’s set was technically top notch and brought many smiles to people’s faces and feets. And by the time the queen of hard dance got her hands on us we were punch drunk with disco happimess.
One and a half hours of Anne Savage’s f*cking fantastic beats and bangs left us floored. This was the best I’ve heard Anne Savage for a long time: despite the blood on the dance floor nothing could put her off. Polysexual South has entered the M25! “Welcome to the capital” so say all of us at the Fridge that night! I can’t wait to hear Rob Tissera, Nuw Idol and Ed Real bring life to the Fridge dance space @ Polysexual South on 18 June.
