The high priestess of aving it all — The *Ting* warms up for Convergence

Reported by benz / Submitted 07-07-05 00:27

The *Ting* is a real one-off. She has been a respected DJ and producer in London circles for years now, making tracks and spinning tunes in any and every style under the sun, putting on hedonistic parties, and more recently making her mark as an accomplished singer. She truly embraces all styles of music, and this musical non-prejudice gives her sets a strong, exciting element of surprise, which seems to be lacking in most DJs in this day and age. “Anything goes” as she says. Her love and involvement in so many different scenes and genres of music is something that is reflected in her personality more generally speaking.

Usually ubiquitous in the London hard dance scene, The *Ting* has, to our dismay, not been around very much in recent times. After having caught up with her it’s easy to see why! A record label, singing lessons, international DJing, promoting, producing... it’s a wonder she gets any time to pick out her very funky outfits! Watching her DJ is always a pleasure, as there is always a strong visual element to her sets — seeing her fully going for it behind the decks really allows the crowd to feel her passion for the music she plays.

This Saturday 9 July sees The *Ting* battle it out with tidy starlet Tara Reynolds in an epic fight between BPMs, basslines, beats, build-ups, breakdowns, and anything else beginning with the letter ‘b’. Where? Why none other than the return of the mighty Convergence at The Fridge in sunny Brixton! The good lady took some time out from her ridiculously busy schedule to get us back up to date with her movements.

It seems to me that we haven’t been seeing as much of you lately as we usually do. What you been up to bird?!

I’ve been touring through Australia and djing at my new residency in Thailand, as well as the northern parts of this country. In fact London is about the only place I’ve not been playing.
I’m also working hard developing my singing voice, new tracks for Proactive and an exciting new live PA with AVFX.

How has your label Proactive Records been doing so far? What kind of stuff have you been putting out?

So far it’s all great. We’ve had fantastic responses from the magazines and also the clubbers. The releases have mostly been hard high energy dance music. The latest release is my second EP and has been charted at no. 19 in Mixmag. We’ve got forthcoming releases from Pete Wardman, Danny Gilligan, Alex Calver and Ali Wilson amongst others.

And what about the Proactive Parties? What’s the deal with them? Have they proved popular?

We had a brilliant party this Friday just gone. Lots of colourful and crazy people who created an uplifting and very friendly vibe all night! I enjoyed listening to the old school house and electro sounds from Queen Maxine. KARL and Conrad played some great music, Pete Wardman was legendary as usual and I really enjoyed pumping up the BPMs with Mr Ed Real at the end where we played some great new school psy-trance, guitar infused techno, freeform, trance core bounce stuff.

At previous events the atmosphere has always been excellent. Good honest fun and self expression, guaranteed. That’s what we love, and that’s what our crowd loves too.

It is well documented that you have a love for the weird, the wonderful, and the extreme. What crazy antics and performances have you seen in clubs in recent times?

Crikey, being a resident at Torture Garden for the last 5 years has meant that I have seen more than most. Empress Stah never fails to come through in her madcapped performances, neither does Lucifire, but in your normal club environment, Steelo’s always a good character to watch out for in that department!

You’ve got your back-to-back with Tara Reynolds coming up at Convergence on July 9 — what do you know of this lady and of her DJing skills?

Tara is a lovely lady. I’ve played b2b with her before and funnily enough it was at the Fridge then too. Her mixing is seamless and she gets into the flow of the event. I seem to remember her leaping up onto the deck table with me at our last rendezvous. Go go Tara!

What memories do you have of Convergences past?

Arrrd beats and happy treats!

What is the one tune that you can’t wait to play at Convergence?

The all new remix of ‘Power in the Light’ fresh from the Sharkey protégé Rik studios.

Have there been any events in your life in recent times which have really made you reevaluate the way you live your life?

Oh my have there ever! I believed that 2003—2004 was my year for change, taking up yoga, and singing started me on a more balanced road. However that was just the beginning and in October 2004 when I entered into an international tri-secular relationship, the real inner me has been bubbling to the surface and I have to say I like her a lot. I’m more calm, focused and feminine.

Is there anything about the hard dance scene (bitchiness aside) that really upsets you?

No.

What residencies do you currently hold? Do you have creative freedom at these regular slots?

I’m still with my first residency Torture Garden. And yes I have much creative freedom here. We have a good communication and throw ideas around each other. It’s a great working environment, where ANYTHING goes!

I also have a new residency on Kho Phangan in Thailand for Bar Sheesha, and yes I have creative freedom here, working in a more, sexy, funky, slow paced environment. It’s rather lush.

Proactive of course is my own event run in conjunction with Paul Jack and Joanna McEwen and this is my real platform to express myself however I wish. Be it house or gabba, you never know quite what you’re going to get when you come to one of these parties.

I have regular slots at many other events as well. I’m always on a creative tip thinking of the next show and how to make it ‘new and improved’, with new tracks, dancing, singing, genre crossing... etc.

I heard you recently finished a set with SL2’s ‘On A Ragga Tip’ — what are your other favourite end-of-night anthems?

Well one of the crowd favourites is ‘Badgers on Acid’ by Syfoon, me and K Complex. I get asked for that track ALL THE TIME. It doesn’t matter which part of the country I’m in. lol.
Hardcore/freeform is nevertheless a very good way to end your set. Or if you’ve been playing hardcore and the crowd are looking a bit worn out, then you just can’t go wrong with a decent bit of old school or a classic party track which everyone would know.

What are the tracks which are really setting your world on fire at the moment?

The current oldies but goodies:
Amen — ‘Passion’ (Baby Doc Remix): Feverpitch
Baby Doc — Hard Work : React
Jon the dentist — Feel So Good (Imagination 2000 Remix): Tidy Trax

From the new stables:
K Complex, Matt Style, Smyrky — Something in Me : NEC Live
Sharkey — Infinite Future (unreleased, this is gonna be HUGE!)
Pete Wardman + Ryan Fisher — Drop it : Proactive

Are there any tracks in your collection which you consider too extreme to play at most events?

Hahaha, of course! There’s a whole entourage of Fist Fuck, Total Output and Rotterdam Records for example, a lot of the heavier techno stuff and most of my drum n bass collection.

There are a plethora of festivals across Europe this summer, with at least one massive event every week. Which ones are you going to and what are you expecting from them?

I’m not planning on going to any of them this year. This is the year of the ‘head down work hard’, next year I plan on going to lots of them and I’ll be expecting a big response!

And finally, what was your name before you were known as The *Ting*?!?

Spook...!

I've never seen any DJ with as much energy behind the decks as Ting. I've only seen her play once, and although I'm not a mssive fan of hard house, she is an entertainer.
