After wowing the crowds on Clapham Common with the world class SouthWestFour festival, HeatUK is bringing you the biggest and best of trance and hard dance for their birthday celebrations at The Brixton Academy on Saturday 24 September. London favourites Phil Reynolds and Ian Betts will play an exclusive b2b set. And in keeping with the bold music policy, we decided to pit them against each other in a no-holds-barred contest to decide... who IS the toughest.
These are two young men at the top of their game. Ian has found time for some world class appearances this year, including the closing set at Turnmills’ The Gallery, Holland’s mighty Dance Valley alongside stars like Paul Van Dyk and Deep Dish, and a starring role at Heat’s last event — SouthWestFour, alongside Sasha and Carl Cox. Phil is probably the biggest star on London’s active and discerning harder dance scene. Resident at Frantic and Convergence, he has played every single major hard trance promotion in the capital, and headlined both the Nukleuz arena at Escape in the Park, and the Frantic & Nukleuz arena at Creamfields. He is also a highly accomplished producer, collaborating with the likes of Nick Sentience, and his long-term production partner Steve Blake. Read what they’ve got to say, and then let’s get ready to rumble.
Heat’s gone back to the tough stuff with their birthday line-up. Are there any DJs that are too hard for you?
PR: I’m not really into hard house, well… not the really hard stuff, and there are plenty of DJs that play that stuff!
IB: Hahaha, that largely depends what kind of mood I’m in! As a DJ and a producer I can appreciate most styles of music even if they don’t set my world alight. That said there have obviously been times where the music has been too much for me!
What DJs do you admire from styles that aren’t so heavy on the bpm?
IB: There’s lots of very talented DJs out there who inspire and influence me, from all genres of dance music — I love breakbeats with DJs like Tom Real and Darren Pearce really hitting the spot at the moment. I also saw Sasha play an amazing set in the Renaissance tent at Dance Valley this year. When I was over in Oz earlier this year I saw a DJ from Melbourne called Boogs who was amazing, and another guy Luke Chable is my current tip for the top.
PR: Nick Warren is a favourite, also Eric Morillo and Roger Sanchez. I don’t necessarily buy rock albums or anything like that, but I enjoy all types of music. I watch MTV.
Christina Aguilera? Yay or nay?
PR: Ha ha! I don’t mind some of her stuff, although I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to hear it! It’s listenable, put it that way!
Will your back2 back set be trance meets hard dance or will you be modifying your styles?
PR: We are planning on getting together and working on what we’re going to play. It’s important for us to get it right — we both play slightly different styles, and on the night it needs to flow well. I have plenty of wicked trance tunes I can play, so I’m sure the set is going to be a stormer.
IB: There is some overlap in our styles though — I imagine we’ll build the set from the more trancey stuff you’d associate with me, to the harder stuff Phil plays. When we first met we were sharing the same clubbing experiences, listening to the same DJs at The Gallery, Grays and Sunny Side Up! We've got very similar DJing backgrounds.
How do you feel about playing back to back?
IB: It is a good laugh and it pushes you as a DJ, but you only get to play for half the normal time, ha ha!
PR: You get to play with your friends… and it’ll be the first time for me and Ian. It’ll be something special, because we used to go clubbing together about 10 years ago before either of us started to mix. We’ve both come a long way! The downside is that sometimes the set doesn’t always flow like it should.
If there’s a God, you’ve got an embarrassing story from back in the day...
PR: I used to wear some pretty dodgy stuff, like silver satin shirts. I don’t recall Ian ever being that stupid!
You both played Ibiza this year, under very different circumstances. How was it for you?
PR: I played a house set at Space… and had an amazing time. It’s a bit of a magical island, you go out there… go out every night of the week, and you’re still ok after three or four nights! Bora Bora to me is the best place in Ibiza — it sums up the essence of the island - it’s free to get in, the music’s great, and it’s right next to the beach. The clubs themselves are amazing… I went to Amnesia for the first time last year when Ian was playing… and I think that’s the best club I’ve ever been to. I was blown away by the sound system — it’s better than anywhere I’ve ever been to in my life. It was absolutely unbelievable… crystal clear.
IB: Ibiza was outstanding! I don’t care whatever anyone says about Ibiza, I think it rocks — I know I was lucky to play for the best at Cream at Amnesia, but the whole vibe about the island is intoxicating as soon as you land. The Heat weeks especially are great fun. I’m so excited to be going back out there in a couple of weeks for the Cream closing party with Tiesto and Eddie Halliwell.
What are the Heat weeks like?
IB: As you can imagine, it’s mayhem. It’s a lot of fun, Ibiza’s such a cool place anyway. Loads of people that know each other going to the same parties, hanging out in the same bars… it’s like your own holiday crew in Ibiza.
Is there much of the harder genres in Ibiza?
PR: This year was the first time that Euphoria and Tidy have done a night at Es Paradis, and it’s been really popular. People like Eddie Halliwell and Lisa Lashes are quite well known now. Before with hard house, even the bigger DJs weren’t that well known within the mainstream, but over the last few years they’ve in the music press a lot more.
Phil you’re putting together your debut artist album. How are things on theproduction front for the two of you?
PR: I’m waiting to get new monitor speakers at home so I can finally mix it down! It’s almost finished. It’s taken such a long time and I can't wait to finish it. Other than that I’ve been productive recently — I’ve finished off four new tracks in the space of three weeks! One with Greg Brookman we started a year ago, called ‘Tarantism’, I’ve done my own mix of the Signum tune ‘Second Wave’, I’ve done a track with Nick Rowland which we haven’t named yet, and I’ve just done a track with Alf Bamford called ‘Do You Wanna Ride’.
IB: I’ve been very busy. I’ve just finished remixing Matt Dareys new single ‘Eternity’ and I’m really pleased with the result… I think it’s one of my strongest productions yet. I’ve also remixed Kuffdam & Plant’s new track called ‘Skyline’ on my Six:Thirty Records label. That’s been getting some great support. I’ve got two original tracks due for release in the next 3 months, and another 4 remixes I’m about to start on. I’m also collaborating with Ollie Leighs on the follow up to ‘Shimmer’, and with Matt Williams on a follow up to ‘Koinomia’. AND on top of that I’ve got loads of other collaborations in the pipeline for later in the year, including one with Phil.
You’re both label bosses. How has selling records changed recently?
IB: It’s a bit of a mixed time for labels at the moment. Selling vinyl is harder than it’s ever been, and digital distribution is still in its infancy, although it is growing. It’s sad, but I think we have to accept that vinyl is a dying medium. Most people will blame the internet… people’s attitudes to file sharing must change if labels and artists are going to survive. People still like to have something tactile in their hands though, so I’ve just launched a new label that’ll be releasing tracks on CD and downloadable MP3s.
Any plans to give up the day job Ian?
IB: It’s getting there, I’d love to. I could devote more time to producing, and running the label, promoting myself… things would grow progressively. But I’ve got a mortgage to pay!
Right, everyone’s got a guilty secret. Both of you, what’s yours?
PR: I’m a bit of a fan of Chicken Cottage… which can’t be good. It’s a really poor version of KFC!
IB: I own… and have played… a copy of Kylie's ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ on 12 inch!
And now, ladies and gentlemen, the moment for which you have all been waiting… who is the daddy? Rest assured, the contest was completed under controlled conditions... i.e. they weren’t in the same room or getting loads of help from their mates.

IB: Lennox Lewis. [1 point]
PR: It’s not Lennox Lewis is it… it’s Vladimir… that Russian bloke. [0 points]
What’s the longest set you’ve ever played?
IB: Five hours at a bar in Clapham on a Sunday afternoon. [0 points]
PR: About 6 hours, at a houseparty in Manchester years ago. [1 point]
How many little old ladies have you rescued from burning buildings?
IB: Precisely none!
PR: None at the moment!
Any heroic deeds that come close?
IB: I put my coat down over a puddle for someone once! [0.25 points]
PR: Nope! [0 points]
If Lisa Lashes got stung by a jellyfish, could you pee on her foot?
IB: If she asked me… and no one was looking… yes. [1 point]
PR: Quite easily yes! I’m not sure if she’d like it mind! [1 point]
How much do you weigh?
IB: Ooh I don’t know, let’s see… eleven stone, six. [too close to call, 1 point each]
PR: About 11 and a half stone. [1 point]
Do you own a baseball bat?
IB: No, but I do own a baseball mitt! [hmm... no it doesn't count... 0 points]
PR: No. [0 points]

What a year it has been. After the sell out success of 20,000 people on Clapham Common, the creators of South West Four return to the legendary Brixton Academy to celebrate four years of mayhem inside the Capital!

Tonight HeatUK welcomes back the No. 25 in the world for an exclusive two-hour-set to kick off the London leg of the ‘Bosh! Live’ tour. He’s joined by Goodgreef legends Adam Sheridan and Alex Kidd. The former is one of the world’s fastest rising trance stars, the latter is the new name in hard house.
The sonic journey in the main arena continues with K90 performing an exclusive 90 minute LIVE set to celebrate the launch of his new ‘Destinations’ album. Featuring some of his hottest new tracks this is your chance to be blown away by one of today’s most talented producers. Mark Doggett (AKA K90) is a regular at our events. And what would a HeatUK event be without our two residents, Ian Betts and Marc French. Ian returns fresh from his appearance at South West Four, Dance Valley and Cream – playing back to back with Phil Reynolds for the first time. Marc French recently headlined The Fridge for his own exclusive showcase, tonight he closes our birthday with the BPM’s going harder and faster!
The foyer is as fierce as ever and welcomes a first time ever performance from the superb Frantic resident – Andy Whitby. Jam-packed with legends old and new, the foyer is a favourite for the purists of the tough beats.
The Balcony Bar offers DJs from Sedition, Frenzied, DFS & Six Degrees providing the best deep, techy, minimal, funky twisted housey beats.
The VIP Room celebrates the talent of the local area: FLASHBAK, BAKLASH, SHINING, EKUALIBRIUM & VITAL... Be warned – this is the real up for it party crowd!
