The birth of a new label: talking Tekelec with Ali Wilson

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 12-09-05 17:30

Given the current nature of sales figures in our scene currently, it is certainly a bold move to start a record label which sells 12” vinyl at a time when artists, distributors and even shops are suffering a huge lull. However, recently the likes of Tidy Trax and Riot! Records have shown that sales figures are still there, if the quality of music is good enough. Which brings us to Ali Wilson, a man who has achieved an enormous amount and whose name has become synonymous with quality hard dance music. Achieving tremendous accolades for tunes such as ‘Just Listen’, ‘Devastation’, ‘The Wolf’ and particularly his remix of BK & Yomanda’s ‘Mayhem in Miami’, Ali has established himself as a name whose output is consistently up there with the best producers in the scene. As Ali launches his new label Tekelec Recordings, I caught up with him to find out more about what we can expect to see from the label.

Firstly, Ali, it must be said that it is certainly brave to be launching a new label given the current sales climate. What are your expectations for sales on the first few releases?

Well the label has had great support from the likes of Carl Cox, Andy Farley, BK, John Askew (Kiss100), Anne Savage & Tom Harding so far so hopefully the sales will be good!

Do you feel that sales figures in general can ever recover from the slump that currently exists, given the enormous competition from illegal MP3 downloading?

I think there is a huge problem with illegal mp3 downloading and until this problem is addressed properly then I think sales will suffer greatly. There needs to be more control on this sort of thing, people think, “Oh, it’s only one download” but it all adds up. If there is some way of controlling this then I feel sales will definitely increase.

In what ways, if any are possible, will you try to combat the threat given by illegal
downloading?

There is not really that much that can be done at the moment I don’t think!

Will you be making the label available in legal MP3 format? If so, on which sites will these be available?

It’s not at the moment but will be available in a few months or so!

You recently tested the MP3 market with some exclusive tracks which appeared on Trackitdown.net and hit the site’s Top 10 sales chart. Do you feel now, after seeing sales figures on these tracks, that the MP3 market has a positive potential on sales figures?

The tracks didn’t sell as well as I’d hoped, I think probably because people have been sharing them on file share programmes etc.

Onto the label itself now. The name for the label is Tekelec Recordings. Where did the name ‘Tekelec’ originate?

Basically I put the two words techy & electronic together to form TEKELEC. It describes the style of music I like to play and produce, techy and electronic dance music.

What direction are you taking the label in?

Basically, each release I’m going to put out one tech-trance track and one or two more techy groove tracks, all of which will be tough and have a funky edge.

What are going to be your first releases, and which are you particularly excited about?

I am excited about both the 1st two releases, they have had great support from different DJs.

The 1st releases are as follows:

TEKELEC001

A: Ali Wilson & Lee Osborne — ‘Revolution Of The Mind’

AA: Ali Wilson — ‘Blackout’

This is out in the shops now (see www.aliwilson.co.ukfor sound clips), it has had great support from the likes of John Askew on Kiss100 FM and BK. Here’s what they had to say… John Askew (KISS100 FM) said: “Killer stomp mayhem from the king of tek Ali Wilson. Have been hammering this everywhere. Gagging to get more records like this!”

BK said: “I love the track, been canning it, top hard ‘n’ groovy!”

Simon Eve said: “Ali Wilson is a prolific one-man production machine, and so it’s fitting that he now launches his own label on which to showcase his sounds. TEKELEC touches down with an impressive two tracker, an impressive first release and undoubtedly a label to keep
an eye on in the months ahead!” 4/5 DJ Mag

Paul Janes said: “It’s great to see Ali Wilson launching his own label. This first release shows why he is continually rated as one of the most innovative hard dance producers in the UK.  Ali’s trademark tough, melodic, funk-fuelled productions are always guaranteed to get the harder floors moving... this release is no exception. Order your copy now!”

TEKELEC002

A: Ali Wilson & Lee Osborne — ‘Lost Souls’

AA: Ali Wilson — ‘In The Zone’

To be released Oct 05.

The 2nd release is myself and Lee Osborne which is a tough, groovey, tech-trancer that has been doing the business on the floors for the likes of Anne Savage & Tom Harding. The flip is an electro soaked, techno groover that’s been getting superb reactions when road tested again by Anne Savage & Tom Harding.

Tom Harding said: “Simply superb stuff this and if we had more tracks like this on the page hard dance could soon be great again. Smacking of producers who know exactly what they are doing, it is a funky, swinging hard trancer that oozes energy and class from the outset. The breakdown is huge, the bassline almighty and this is just one off those unstoppable tracks that will set the dance floor alight. Add on to this an equally awesome B-side in the form of In The Zone and this is a must for your box. Buy it now.” 5/5 & tune of the month in IDJ magazine.

Anne Savage said: “Ali Wilson emerges from the studio with these two gems that bring much needed class and quality to the current hard dance production scene. Lost Souls has a real main arena appeal and has really shook up my hard dance dance sets with really fresh synth sounds yet packed with energy which really rocks any crowd. ‘In The Zone’ — absolute favourite with me at the moment. Wicked vox, jackin groove and full of rises and swells and an awesome main hook ensuring it a place in every set I’ve played recently from Global Gathering to Cape Town!”

Will the label therefore feature predominantly output from yourself, or will you feature other artists as well?

At the moment it is predominantly for my own productions and collaborations that I feel will fit the label.

Will you be featuring releases from any upcoming artists on the label? If so, how can they get into contact with you to send a demo of their work?

To be honest at the moment I’m just putting my own productions and collaborations as I have a fair bit of stuff all ready, but in the future I do plan to get others on board hopefully when the label gets going a bit.

Finally, do you have any upcoming projects yourself for the label which you can reveal?

The 3rd release is an EP from myself and Matt Smallwood which consists of 2 funky techno groovers, called ‘Ipa’ and ‘12:54’, and a tech trance track that we are currently putting together, Andy Farley has included ‘Ipa’ on his new DMC — Hardhouse Update compilation.
Also myself, Matt Smallwood & Lee Osborne are producing under the name of Elec-Trilogy of which we have created a track called ‘Centara’ which Carl Cox has been playing. That will be another future release, possibly number 4! I also have a competition to win test pressings and promos of the 1st releases…

To enter follow this link — http://www.aliwilson.co.uk/competition-sept-2005.php and simply answer this question… What are the track names of the 1st TEKELEC release?

Thanks to Ali for the images.
