On the eve of the launch of their Hard Dance Republic Volume 2 mix album we offered you, the Harderfaster crew, the opportunity to ask three of the UK, nay the globe’s leading hard dance DJs anything you wanted, and boy was it tough..
The questions came in thick and fast with some being up to Mastermind level (errrrmm...) and with some people unable to comprehend the task in hand we had loads of random nonsense. Over the three days the thread was online we somehow managed to pry a small selection of questions from the HF Elite. So, please read on and see your questions answered!
DJ facts:
Ed Real: Ed is one of the most influential and hard working people in hard dance. Be it running his label Riot! Recordings (alongside partner BK) promoting his monthly club Riot! (at the prestigious End club in London) or his relentless DJ schedule that has seen him endlessly touring the globe playing at some of the biggest clubs and festivals the world has to offer or his day-to-day duties of running mp3 web portal www.trackitdown.net
Paul Glazby: The founder of Vicious Circle Records, Paul has carved a name for himself as one of the hardest DJs on the scene. From his humble beginnings as resident at Sheffield’s notorious Insomniacz, Paul’s rise to fame has been nothing short of meteoric. His studio work and label has allowed him to carve a niche that has won him an army of fans across the world. With productions including ‘Motherf**cker’ ‘Annihilation’ and ‘Hostile’ when Paul’s on the decks you better make sure you bring you hard hat!
Nick Sentience: Nick cut his teeth in the production sweat-shop that was Nukleuz Records, emerging as one of the fastest rising new hard dance producers. His legendary 12”s such as ‘Purple Twilight’ and ‘Digital Dialogue’ alongside top level remixes such as Storm’s ‘Time To Burn’ and Mauro Picotto’s ‘Lizard’ set the tone for Nick to become one of the scene’s top DJs and producers. As well as continuing to produce some of the most forward thinking music around, Nick has recently joined old production buddy BK in a shared studio environment where they are working on joint material and a new live show.
If you could make a track with anyone who would it be and why? (from
Richard Launch)
Ed: I’d make a track with Chuck D from Public Enemy — he’s the greatest MC of all time and we’d send out a message to the people up top!
Paul: Metallica — they’re quality!
Nick: It would have to be Mr Howlett of the Prodigy.
Ed Real
What do you plan on doing in your retirement? (from Maxine)
Ed: DJ at the local tea dance.
Paul: Learn to play golf, travel, you know, the usual.
Nick: Move to a nice sunny country, eat good food and appreciate the planet I’ve lived on but been rushing around too much to look at.
What did they do before they became professional DJs? (from J Tempo)
Ed: I’ve been earning money from spinning records since I was 19 when I was at University in Portsmouth. So aside from that and managing Nukleuz and then Riot! I've never had a ‘proper job’ I guess...
Paul: I was a printer when I left school, not a very good one though — lol!
Nick: I started at 17 so before that I was a professional college drop out and parent annoyance machine.
Nick Sentience
If you were a kind of cheese, what cheese would you be and why? (from clubrepublic)
Ed: Oxford Blue — erm... because I’m from Oxford and I’m tasty!
Paul: Leskol — it’s half fat!
Nick: I would be Edam cos it’s from Holland where all the coffee shops are.
Where do you go record shopping? (from Djdyju)
Ed: 99% of the music I play comes direct from record labels and producers, but when I’m in the mood for some retail therapy I buy my records from Phonica in Soho and Groove Connection in Amsterdam.
Paul: Most of what I play is stuff I’ve produced myself or is stuff we are going to release on VC, or has been sent to me by other artists or labels. I don’t buy any hard house, I buy some techno records from Massive Records in Oxford though.
Nick: I use the websites like trackitdown, DJ download, Trance shop, Psy shop and also play what other producers send me.
Paul Glazby
As label owners — why are record sales not as good as they used to be? (from K.A.R.L)
Ed: The music isn’t as good as it used to be!
Paul: I wish I knew!
Nick: Most tracks are available on the Internet for free now. You can’t compete with that.
BONUS ROUND!
To Ed Real: ‘Sunshine On a Rainy Day’ WTF? (From Wub)
Ed: I blame it on the drugs...
To Ed Real: What’s the story behind your Riot tattoo? What made you get it? (from Jennie B)
Ed: Three years ago I played a party called After Hour Power in LA which finished mid-morning. Not in the mood to quit I ended up at an all-day club out the back of a tattoo parlour. Sometime during the afternoon it seemed like a great idea and a tattoo was born!
To Paul Glazby: DJ Sammy or Alice DJ? (from K.A.R.L)
Paul: Can’t we kill them both?
To Nick: Why did you move away from a more techy sound to hard trance? (from Davoi Kai)
Nick: Erm, I play both! Just depends which night or album or mood you catch me. I like to start off with some tech-trance like Mac Zimms or Sander Van Doorn then move up a gear.
