Saturdays will never be the same again! Frantic presents Nu-Hype preview with Elvis

Reported by benz / Submitted 24-01-06 18:16

Saturday afternoon. What do you usually do? Sit and mong in front of the TV? Brave the idiot-filled crowds of Central London for shopping? Sleep? Do something cultural? It's a time of the week that feels like a bit of a limbo between the relief of reaching Friday night and the often bigger ordeal of Saturday night. It can often feel like you are just sitting around waiting for the night time activities to kick off. This weekend however sees the inception of an exciting new way to spend your Saturday avo and to kick off your night early - and it's called Nu-Hype!

It’s a totally free party featuring some of the scene’s best loved DJs alongside some bright new names for the future, and it’s taking place down at the lovely Hidden in Vauxhall. It’s also the official pre-party for Timeless at Renaissance Rooms. Harking back to the days when Frantic used to stage pre-parties at Cyberdog in Camden, this is an altogether more organised affair, with much more time and effort going into it then ever before. Elvis, DJ/promoter extraordinaire, gave us the low-down on his new party.

So Elvis, whose idea was this party? What was the motivation behind it?

Guess that would be me, I thought with Timeless coming up and Hidden being 5mins up the road it would be the perfect excuse for the party to start early. Secondly there’s a lot of exciting new DJs out there waiting to be played! My aim is to use Nu-Hype to give them that chance.

This is the official warm-up for Timeless… so can we expect a Nu-Hype event to proceed every big Frantic event in the future?

If the demand is there (looking good so far!), then it’s a big fat yes.

What criteria have been used when choosing the line-ups for the event?

For Nu-Hype we have put together a line up that provides you with a good balance of new and established DJs plus a good progression in styles.

When you were a young aspiring DJ years ago, were there lots of opportunities for new DJs to play out like this or was it harder than it is now?

I think it’s harder now as there seemed to be a lot more events in London 3 years ago. Again this is the main reason for launch of Nu-Hype to provide new DJs with this opportunity.

So who have you got playing at this first event? What can we expect to hear and which DJs are you excited about seeing?

Well… in the hard room ranging from hard house to hard trance we have Kevin Energy, Little Gem, Andy T, Stevi D, Gordon Darley, Shimmer and Flip.

In the bar room we have PK, Seany Sean, Steelo, Mark Lamberth and myself providing you with house and breaks.

I can’t wait to hear all the DJs do their thing!

Steelo vs Seany Sean will be an example of DJs trying something a bit different with their ‘Hardbeat’ set. Which other DJs have you seen who really stand out in your mind as something out of the ordinary in terms of what they do?

I heard these two last summer at 123 and I loved it! It has always been on my mind to book them. If you haven’t had the pleasure then come down and check them out.

Kevin Energy has always impressed me with his mixing and style and he always seems to deliver the goods. Finally I have to mention K.A.R.L. Not only is he a superb DJ but he managed to get me to enjoy trance which I thought would never be possible! LOL!

You’ve had experience putting on parties before with Zoology and Paradoxx. Is this the first time you’ve promoted something where you are the main driving force behind it?

This is the first time I have been in this position and it’s a learning curve I tell you. But I have great people helping me; Shimmer, Gordon Darley and the support from Will and his team.

What was the very first party you promoted in fact? Was it Zoology or was there something prior to that which we might not know about?

My first party was called MJ12Select — we used to run our event at a snooker club in East Grinstead we did alright considering we had to close at 11pm… ahh such fond memories…

OK so we’ve covered the music — why else should we come to the party? Got any free stuff?

For starters we will be offering a free glass of champagne to the first 50 people. Then we have 20 tickets for Timeless and 20 tickets for HHA to give away. And last but not least I will be giving away 100 copies of my latest demo.

Nu-Hype finishes at 8pm —Timeless doesn’t begin til 9pm. What can we do in between Elvis?!

Good question… Hidden are now allowing us to open until 8.45pm so by the time you get your coat and walk down to Renaissance Rooms it will be time to start Timeless!

With Nu-Hype, Timeless, and Twist (the official afterparty), Frantic and its associates are offering around 21 hours of solid Vauxhall clubbing. 3 wicked venues, 3 wicked parties. How long do you think are you going to last?

No problem. Bring it on! I am hardcore to the bone… honest.

How can aspiring DJs get in with a chance of playing at Nu-Hype? Do you listen to demos much or do you prefer to check people out in the flesh?

Both, if I hear a good demo or hear a good DJ play out I will book them.

DJs if you are interested in playing for Nu-Hype email me your name for the guestlist and bring a demo down to the event.

And finally, why should we choose Nu-Hype over any other Saturday afternoon activity?

Excellent DJs, a wicked venue, free give-aways and promoter who is called Elvis! What more could you want?!

Thanks to Elvis, George Thatcher and Pink Kitty for their photos.
