Welcome to part two of three interviews in the lead up to this year's International Breakbeat Awards, showcasing the talent of the official after party headliners.
Pendulum known to most for their drum ‘n’ bass roots are playing a breakbeat set at Breaking Ground, the official Breakspoll afterparty. So who are Pendulum and where are they from?
“PENDULUM formed in 2002 by three musicians from Western Australia with similar visions and musical backgrounds. Their mission was to pull together their production resources, ideas and influences from various styles of music to create a new sound that they felt was missing from dance music. Intelligent dance floor music: that could tear a dance floor apart at the seams yet still have a deep long-lasting impact on enthusiasts. The individual members behind PENDULUM have been active in Perth’s live music scene for several years. Anscenic and Speed played together in the acclaimed Perth band Xygen, while Elhornet has been DJ-ing at clubs, raves, and festivals in Perth for over 5 years.” Echo Location Agency
Pendulum have gained the support of their peers including the legend that is Adam F and DJ Fresh from Bad Company UK. Since signing to the BREAKBEAT KAOS label, they have relocated to the UK and have spent most of their timing touring the world with stops in nearly every continent!
Due to everyone (including myself) having a busy diary last week I had to settle for a long distance interview, however Elhornet did not disappoint and came back with some very good and in depth answers!
What makes playing to a breaks crowd?
I find I can play a completely different set of music to a breaks crowd than I can a lot of the time with drum and bass. To me, breaks audiences don’t seem as obsessed with massive buildups in tunes and drops that sound like the world is ending. Its quite acceptable to play a good mix of styles and take listeners on a trip rather than concentrating on beating them around the head with double drops of the biggest tunes in your box. It’s more relaxing playing breaks.
Why the switch between d'n'b and breaks?
I wouldn’t say there was any switch as such. Collectively breaks has been something we have all been interested in. I personally was into the whole big beat thing when it came about and have always enjoyed listening to it. Releasing breaks seemed like a good way to expand the styles of music we’re involved in, and all of us had been producing breaks for time, just not releasing it.
Who do you admire in the breaks scene?
There’s so many artists pushing the envelope and putting their all into the breaks scene! I really feel the energy of some of the bassline guys like Breakfastaz and Autobots and the techier guys like the Plumps, Evil 9, Meat Katie, Dylan Rhymes… they’re all releasing some great funk. Of course for me personally I’m a big fan of Aquasky and working with them on a track last year was awesome.
Who would you say is your greatest influence in the scene (be it breaks or d’n’b)?
Musically it’s hard to say now who we are influenced by. I think for a year or two now we’ve been more stricly focussed on our own music as something thats inspired by our own thoughts and feelings rather than taking inspiration from things other people have done in the past. There’s always going to be producers who come out with music that creates an impression, but thats not always something that effects how we write.
If you hadn’t of got into music, what job do you think you would be doing right now?
I really have no idea. I don’t want to think about it. I’ve done jobs from working on farms to running clubs, being a sales rep, a network admin, doing I.T support and making pizzas. I’d be useless in a controlled working environment again!
Where is the weirdest place you have played out?
A greek restaurant in North Carolina, after punk and metal bands at rock gigs, at commercial pop music festivals in Russia (the crazy frog dj’d that night…?!?!), the list goes on.
Where do you stand in the argument between vinyl and mp3, by that I mean do you support the use of mp3 or are you vinyl junkies?
I really couldn’t care less how people play music. I am a vinyl fan but I also support the ease of dj’ing cd’s. Laptop dj’ing doesn’t bother me. In fact you could plug your nokia into the mixer and roll out a tune for all I care, as long as it sounds good.
Has it ever gone wrong beyond control during a set?
Lately there’s been mosh-pits at gigs that rival any punk and hardcore gig. It’s not really out of control but it’s definitely something that electronic music venues don’t expect and a few gigs have been touch and go.
Who is your favourite DJ right now?
Friction is doing some amazing 3 deck mixing at the moment and plays a great selection from one end of drum and bass to the other. I’ve always been a fan of Klute, and Teebee for the depth their sets bring.Hype is always a favourite as he’s one of the true pioneers of the scene, and lately I’ve been enjoying watching Goldie play.
How many records do you own?
Spread between Australia and the UK I’ve got about 3000 tunes. 99% are drum and bass.
Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I lived in a house that was sold for $1. We woke up hungover and there were TV crews in our front yard doing a story. I thought the police had come to take us all away.
What have you got playing on your home stereo at the moment?

You are stuck on a desert island, which 2 DJs would you be glad to have stuck on the island with you and why?
Sasha and Klute. They can both play really varied and really long sets. I’m sure it would make the time pass better.

I do like a good fully matured cheddar.
[forum question] When can we expect a live tour?
That’s the current focus, the next chapter. I can’t say when it will launch but its being worked on now.
[forum question] Where does the vocal in 'Slam' actually come from?
A text to speech generator.
[forum question] What do your family think of your music?
Music is probably the only thing I’ve properly applied myself to. After a lot of discouragement and the usual ‘get a real job’ taunts they’re now all very supportive and a bit shell shocked still.
[forum question] During the making of the video for Slam did the fat bloke ever get arrested or told off by the police for indecent exposure?
Surprisingly no! I think he gained some female admirers though. Some ladies like them large?
What can we expect from your set at Breaking Ground?
Pretty much just a good break beat mix! The amount of depth in the scene at the moment is great and I like to draw from across the board and play the stuff I’m feeling at the moment.

Their breaks sets are good but their DnB sets are just fucking INTENSE! love it
