Tales from The *Ting* in Thailand — Part 2: bringing up the rear at Gay Pride, Phuket

Reported by *Ting* / Submitted 29-03-06 18:06

The *Ting* spent two months on Ko Pha-Ngan, the full moon beach party island, investigating the expanding music scene, working on her album and getting amongst it with Thai experiences.

Gay Pride has always been a colourful, courageous and ready to party event, with people coming out from every rock and walk of life to wave their banners and march proud for their beliefs in their own sexuality.

I had no idea what to expect from such an occasion here in Thailand, living primarily on a quiet beach on the north of Ko Pha-Ngan. The majority of the people on parade were men, not that you’d know it to look at them. They’d all made huge efforts with their ‘drag’ and were largely in traditional Thai style costume along with bright carnival feathers and diamantes, fake bosoms and a lot of makeup.

Floats from all the neighbouring towns were there, advertising their bars and handing out free condoms and chocolates. Each float and its supporting dancers carried a theme, including the traditional YMCA Village People, Dikes on Bikes (although they were men too), Carnival Queens, and Cowboys and Indians.

Indians

With music to match, a couple of the floats had the more traditional style East Asia sounds and some a more Western influence, playing trance with the last one even playing breaks!

As we watched the last float go by, steadily making our way through the gin and tonics, the girl gang, Lesbian Adventures Thailand, who we were with, joined in on the end of the parade and I, along with my darling Luke (who was the only lesbian man in the parade, see outfit for details) joined on board.

Lesbian Adventures Thailand

As we walked our way through the busy streets, we managed to find probably the only other female gays in the village, who also joined us in the dancing, holding of the banner and waving to the crowds on the side.

Soon we noticed that we weren’t the only group to highjack the end of the parade. The Moulin Rose bar Katoys were now behind us in a most elaborate array of outfits, the leader dressed in a black evening gown, wearing high heals and whipping the crowd into a frenzy with her dancing. Well it made our little group seem positively boring, so to spice things up a bit, I tackled my shyness (lol) and a dance off promptly ensued with said leader from the gang.

I bust a few moves and she/he matches me step for step, we go again and people around us are clapping and egging us on. We’ve at this point created enough space for some more fancy manoeuvres so I do a few cartwheels. The crowd goes wild! She responds by doing the box splits, which if she had anything down below, must surely have seen an ending to any of their practical use. Astounded I bow to her superiority, shake her hand and thank her for being so much fun.

At the end of the parade we enter a street set up with a stage full of the colourful characters from the day strutting their stuff, with the rest of the street lined with everybody else all drinking and well, getting merry and err gay.

Luke James getting amongst it

If you’ve not been to a Gay pride event somewhere in the world, I highly recommend it for some hedonism, dressing up in brightly coloured clothing and feeling what it might be like to be a member of the opposite sex for a day.
