My first time: Ian M, birthday girl The *Ting*, mash-up hero Tuffcub and Billy ‘Daniel’ Bunter tell us all about their first clubbing experiences.
100% Classics is going to be a party that rekindles those early experiences. We’re sure that you can empathise with the stories our heroes have to tell. Join us in a trip down memory lane as these legends whet your appetite for the Bank Holiday kick-off.
Ian M: the original banging dj for over a decade. Alongside fellow Midlander and Trade resident Tony De Vit, these two pioneers made our music hard.
My first rave/festival
I think it was Troll at The Soundshaft. What a brilliant night! A few of us used to pop down every 6 weeks or so to see Daz Saund (also from Leicester) play. It was also where we got to hear Trevor Rockcliffe first play as well. And of course, it was run by Tim, who ended up co-running Trade with Miss Malice.
My first club
It was either The Catacombs in London or it could have been Le Chic or Shades in Nottingham. DJ of the day at Shades was a Notts local called Tom, who had a very carefree attitude to djing. But he used to play some of the most upfront/wicked tunes for the day.
My first dance record
‘Keep On Truckin’ by Eddie Kendricks.
My first record shop
Probably either a Boots or Woolies I should imagine!?
My first dj hero
An American DJ called Greg James. Besides being a wicked DJ; he installed a GLI sound system into Le Chic/Part Two in Nottingham. The system had a total of 58 speakers on the dance floor and when Greg came over to re-tweak the sound, you knew about it!
And I also found out later, Tony de Vit admitted to me that Greg taught him how to mix!
My first decks
Managed to save up for 1 Technics 1210 deck and was in process of saving for another when Tony came along and sold me one of his spare 1210s he had scattered throughout the house. I then brought a Numark PPD1975 Mixer c/w 16 bit sampler, which I still use now. It has such a very smooth and gorgeous sound to it.

My first rave/festival
Earth Dance at Brixton Academy I think in 1997, got off me chops and levitated around the stage whilst System 7 were playing! Before that I was a dodgy goth/industrial type. Changed my life that event!
My first club
Oh god do I have to admit this!? It was The Works (known then as Volts in Kingston) where I grew up and had my 18th birthday there. ERK! After that it was Tilt @ The Electric ballroom followed by Slimelight at the Electrowerks. After that it was Brixton Academy then Escape From Samsara @ The Fridge.
My first dance record
Mark NRG ‘Never Lost His Hardcore’, given to me by a work colleague from Cyberia after hearing it played by Viki Red at Kittylips the week before! The only thing I have ever collected has been the entire Prodigy collection on vinyl.
My first record shop
Kinetic Records. Think I probably stayed there for 2 days straight.
My first dj hero
DJ Orange Peel, fookin’ legend. I approached him after seeing him play at Trancentral (I think) and offered to swap him a website for dj tuition. We became close mates, starting with him smoking phatt ones whilst I shat bricks and tried to mix in front of him. Where are ya now Nial??? Get in touch mate!
My first dj set
That’ll be at the first event I ever put on, June 12th 1999. Tranceformation at the SE1 (known then as the Drome). I Played in front of 1,500 people! At least it was my event so I knew loads of the people in the room. I put myself on the line-up after Orange Peel and before Karim!! Modest! HA!
My first decks?
That’ll be one home CD player and one home Technics turntable! Followed by Numark CD decks and then onto my current set up of 2 Technics 1210sl’s and 2 pioneer CDJ100s…
Tuffcub: behind the scenes bootleg master and web ninja. Known the world over for his mash-up house mixes, he’s the captain of the funky classics room.
My first rave/festival
A illegal rave held in about 1989 on the ‘downs’ near Newbury. It was an experience is all I can say!
My first club
Well technically it was some god awful club in Leicester that played whatever was in the charts that week. ‘Proper’ club wise it would be the Nightingale in Birmingham, which I spent many a night in. Cheesey downstairs, harder stuff upstairs.
My first dance record
Does ‘Ghostbusters’ count? No? ‘Heylom Halub’ by Capella then — the start of a life long devotion to Capella. I’ve still got the orginal 7" of that track somewhere.
My first record shop
Trax in Soho. I buy all my breakbeat online now from Streetwise music.
My first dj hero
Probably Steve Thomas at Trade, a brilliant mix of a harder sound with a funky edge. I probably spent half my life down at Turnmills when I moved to London what with Trade, a quick break and then on to FF or in the later years, Melt.
My first decks
Some incredibly shitty CD decks. Looking back they were bloody awful but this was about 10 years ago so they were pretty much top of the range then. I got some 1210s a couple of years later.
Billy Bunter: from body popping in Hatfield to raving in his school uniform Billy ‘Daniel’ Bunter invented the phrase “avin it” — we salute you!
My first rave
Labrynth 1989, 15 years of age (i grew up fast). It was every thing I expected and more. I walked in and Kenny Ken was on the decks dropping tunes like Chime — ‘Orbital’ and Corporation of 1 — ‘Real Life’!!! It was proper baggy jeans, kickers and Naf Naf tops.
My first club
Silver City in Wood Green where Labrynth was held for a short period — an underground sweat box with a booming sound system, tons of smoke and stobes and an original rave crowd.
My first dance record
My 1st ever 12" record was the B Boys — ‘Girls’ in 1984. My first ever dance record probably Street Sounds 11 with Fondae Rae — ‘Touch Me’ on it. My Dad used to buy me all the latest electro and soul compilations from Street Sounds when I was about 8 or 9.
My first record shop
Music Power in Haringey & Groove Records in Soho, I used to have Saturday jobs on the Markets and save all my money and bunk school to go record shopping ... I was a fucker at school, all I wanted to do was be a dj.
My first DJ hero
Mike Allan — Capital radio, the original UK radio hip hop dj, around about 84 to 87, I used to record all of his shows, save up my money every week and go and buy the best records he was playing.
My first DJ set?
A house party in Wood Green in 1989 to a crowd of people much older then me all screaming accccciiiiiiieeeeeeeedddddddddddd. My 1st proper dj gig was at Labrynth/2000 and a few months later @ 4 Aces in Dalston, fate that Labrynth was my 1st rave then 1st dj gig. I was dropping tunes like Rhythm is Rhythm — ‘Strings Of Life’ and Patti Day — ‘Right Before My Eyes’.
My first decks
I saved up for decks and went and brought a pair of Kenwood belt drives when I was about 13, they was pointless!!! you couldn’t mix or scratch on em. I learnt a valuable lesson.... Don’t get excited and spunk your money on the 1st thing you see. I had actually been playing out for about 5 years until I got my 1st set of Technics in 1994. It was all about the music more then the mixing for me in the early days.
