Dave Joy finally hits London

How is it possible that one of hard trance’s most respected djs and label owners has never played in London? After hearing Dave Joy’s promo cd and label sampler late last year, not only was I converted from my usual funky house vibes to the dark side, but I knew I wanted to see this man play. After all, he’s djed at some great events around the UK and Europe and, earlier this year, Australia, so why not London?!
My subsequent flirtation with the world of promotion to make this happen is another feature in itself, and probably of little interest to the many jaded HF crew who’ve been there, done that and come out the other side. The purpose of this feature however it to introduce Dave Joy, my favourite hard trance artist, who’s playing his London debut at Electrolysis at the Factory this Friday night.
What inspired you to become a dj? If you weren’t making music what career path would you have chosen?
My long time interest in music and the fact that I collected a room full of cds and records made it easy to get into djing. I guess I would’ve ended up homeless if I hadn’t made it in the music industry!
Where, and with who, did you learn to mix?
The mixing skills came along all by themselves when I was djing at my local pub in my hometown. I never practised ! didn’t even have decks at home!
What advice do you have for those trying unsuccessfully to mix?
Everyone who has the beat in the blood can mix after trying for a while! Those who don’t should maybe become a chef or policeman instead!
Have you always exclusively played hard trance?
When I started djing hard trance was far from being invented. I did and still do play all sorts of styles, just not under my ‘Dave Joy’ guise!
What was the first record you bought and why did you acquired it?
I’ve absolutely no idea! I kinda remember that Agnelli & Nelson’s ‘Everyday’ was one of the first ones. This was and still is one hell of a track!
You’ve made some of the biggest hard trance anthems of our times. Out of all your productions, what’s your favourite?
Definitely the remix we’ve done for Alphazone’s ‘Flashback’ (released on Nukleuz in the UK).
Has it surprised you that your tracks have been so successful?
I wasn’t really aware of that fact until I went to Melbourne, where everyone seemed to buy and play our tunes. This experience was kinda creepy in the first place, but hey . . . I’m totally blown away about the way people talk to and about me these days.
You’ve played in a few countries around the world and at some wicked parties. What’s been your favourite set so far? Is there anywhere you haven’t played yet and would like to?
The biggest and most mindblowing set was defo Launch @ QBH in Melbourne in September 04. This I will always remember! It’s also always wicked to play at my favourite Uk event called Bionic in Cardiff. Of course, there are tons of places it would be a dream to play at i.e. Gatecrasher, Gods Kitchen, the tidy Weekender and the big festivals in Holland such as q-dance or Dance Valley.
You once said that vocals have no place in trance music? Why or is it that vocals inevitably turn things Europoppy? Do they inevitably become cheesy remakes of 70s and 80s that topless GHBsexuals dance all weekend to in gay funky house clubs — you know the type of music you play at your sets in your home town?!
Did I??? When? Where? I don’t really fancy commercially sung tracks such as the German hands-up vocal trance. Nice ones such as ‘Silence’ by Delerium are still credible tunes that work well on dancefloors . . . I just don’t play em as Dave Joy! What’s wrong with gay funky house clubs anyway??!! *lol*
Where do you see your career taking you in the next 10 years?
I will definitely try to expand my own label. It’ll be one hell of a job though and I hope the music market will recover soon from its problems with illegal downloads and down the drain sale numbers of cds and vinyls. Besides that I see myself djing as a nearly blind 80 year old with a walking stick, fake teeth and a bypass! *lol*
Who has inspired you professionally in terms of music and DJing ability?
Look I really can’t name a single group or singer! I grew up with loads of music around me. First swing through my Father’s collection, then German songs because of television then I slowly got into pop music.
Growing up I loved Madonna, the Pet Shop Boys, Kim Wilde, Michael Jackson . . . all sorts of 80s famous acts!

In your home country Switzerland you play many commercial sets in clubs. What sort of tracks do you pull out for the mainstream audience? Why do you choose to live in Switzerland when you DJ the music you love there so little? Do you ever think of packing in hard trance and focussing on more commercial sounds?
I can spin everything from 60s up to the present like rock n roll, pop, funk, soul, rock, house, dance etc. . . . I love music so it doesn’t really matter what I play!! You can’t really call it “choos[ing] to live in Switzerland”, after all I’m born and raised here, so it’s pretty normal that I live here, although my biggest dream is to relocate to Australia one day soon.
You’ve recently launched your own record label, Joyride Music, at a time when many labels are halting vinyl production or simply closing down altogether. Are you crazy? What challenges have you faced to get that vinyl out there?
Put it this way: if everyone is shutting down then who will still sell stuff??!! Since I’m running it myself I don’t have to pay employees, which makes me independent and as long as I still sell a few copies it’s worth the effort I’m living for at this very moment!
What forthcoming releases do you have planned for Joyride Music?
As you said before: I’m crazy . . . no . . . actually . . . I’m a total wacko in today’s label-business! Currently I’m preparing the launch of five additional sublabels.
The first release Skywalker (Part 1) was out this month on Thrust Groove Records, followed by next week’s release dj Revibe — ‘Bangin’ on Joyride Recordings. Also in the making is a sublabel on which I intend to release the more harder stuff and this one, called Doof Doof Traxx, will be exclusively distributed at London-based Tuned Distribution.
I’ll also manage three labels in co-operation with partners: Tuned Traxx will be dedicated to Australian hard dance producers, Troxx Records will be a (yes I know you’re gonna slap me now . . . ) more commercial vocal trancy thing and Blitzfaktor Records will be the exposing label for my Swiss mates from the Blitzfaktor team.
Which record label (apart from your own obviously), do you see as crucial in the development of hard trance?
A lot of independent UK labels have taken over from the Germans, such as Highfish or Trancewarez recordings, so we will have an eye on those to see where they’re going in the future. My favourite label is Silicon records though, which isn’t really that much of a pure hard trance label, but still released monster tunes for my taste!
Name your top 5 djs of all time and which one would you most like to do a B2B set with?
I can’t really list fav djs to be honest. one that I really liked when I saw him play was Johan Gielen. I hate b2b sets so I’m trying to avoid those!
What are the highlights of your career so far?
Definitely to have gained the acceptance and interest of the UK market, and of course my trip to Australia, where I met the most wonderful people and experienced the best rave scene . . . so that’s where I see myself living in the near future!

What have you been up to today? How would you describe a typical day in the life of Dave Joy?
That’s inside information atm! There is no such thing as a normal day in the life of . . . . Besides getting a deal with Tina Cousins, doing a deal with an Australian label and putting some of my tracks on compilations you mean?!? And as you know I’m a totally unorganized chaotic trouble-making wacko.
You’re playing in London for the first time this weekend at my birthday party, Electrolysis. What sort of set can your fans expect? And why should readers who’ve never heard of you come and hear you play?
This one is very huge for me since it was a long wished for dream to finally play at the capitol of dance music!! I will play all the hard trance stuff to destroy the dance floor!
