Peach where are ya?! Graham Gold goes back to 1997 for HeatUK: Evolution

Reported by benz / Submitted 18-11-06 18:27

For those who don’t know, Peach was the legendary club that took the roof of Camden Palace every single Friday night between 1996 and 2003. It’s quite hard to put in to words just how much this club meant to so many people. Clubbing (and other types of) cherries were popped at the legendary party week in week out, lifelong friendships were made, wedding ceremonies were held, Antipodeans became friends with British pikeys, and a whole generation fell in love with trance music. At the forefront of this clubbing phenomenon was Graham Gold — a long-standing dj who has been a major figure in dance music for the best part of two decades.

On December 9th, a very exciting prospect for former Peach addicts comes in the form of HeatUK Evolution: Natural Selection. Why? Because for the first time since Peach left Camden Palace, Graham Gold will be returning to revisit a golden era in dance music — with an exclusive back to 1997 classics set! This is sure to get a few ex-clubbers coming out of the woodwork as well as giving those who weren’t there in the first place a taste of what they missed. Over to Graham to take us back to those heady days of Camden dirt, cups of tea, Pele, Darren Pearce, Dave Lambert and the days when trance ruled the world...

When did the first Peach event occur and who set the party up?

It was September 1993 at Legends in Old Burlington Street and was set up between Kiss (who have always owned the brand), Nikki Smith (a promoter) and me.

Did it run from Camden Palace from the very start or were other venues considered?

We moved to Camden in 1996, having been at Legends for a year (‘93–’94), then outselling it, then onto the fabulous Café de Paris for another year (late ‘94–’95) before outgrowing that too. Then we moved to the Leisure Lounge in Holborn, which was also a great venue with great management (Hi Jim!).

By this time Peach was pulling 1800 people every week without a guest! Every other big club right across the UK relied totally on big name guests!

Then Camden came up at the most perfect time — the beginning of the trance explosion!

Was the party an instant success or did it take a while to establish a following?

Read above! It was sold out from week one in Legends (very much to my surprise I hasten to add!)

Did Peach make a noticeable difference to your dj career once it started properly going off? Or was that already going very well?

Peach launched at a time when I was just beginning to get recognition back as a dj. I had had it all through my soul years, doing the Sound show on Capital, the Radio London Soul Night Out, writing for Blues & Soul — Mixmag didn’t exist then! But when Kiss came along, I got the fucking breakfast show — not the most credible show to do musically. When I lost that in ‘92, I was totally in the wilderness and I have to say just pure determination and constant fighting got me where I’ve got to today.

You will be stepping back in time to the year of 1997 for a classic Peach set at HeatUK: Evolution at Koko on December 9th. If we were truly to experience the true Peace vibe for this event, what would have to be done? (Apart from changing the name of the venue back!)

Easy — get the Peachyravers in there! They were awesome and made the club basically. They ran with us wherever we went to musically and they propelled us forward as djs. They wanted to hear new music every week — they didn’t want the same ole same ole, and as residents, that was great for us, ‘cos we could experiment. I played a big brand club once and the resident played Delirium ‘Silence’ — when it was at its peak — at midnight, the last record of the warm up set! Hello!!!

Oddly enough, this will be the first time I have been to Camden since Peach left so it is going to be very nostalgic for me!

What images and sounds does the year 1997 bring back to your mind?

Image-wise, walking through that tunnel and seeing over 2000 at 4.30 in the morning going ballistic! Is there anything better in life? Musically big room trance hadn’t hit us, but it was Vincent de Moor, early PVD, ‘Bellissima’ and I think I had better check the Gold Discs I got for Kiss Mix, Kiss in Ibiza and Club Cuts to remind me of the rest!

Of course at this time Peach was in its heyday. Why and how did the Camden Palace events draw to a close?

The Peach heyday actually lasted from 1993 to about a year before we left Camden! The reason I say “for a year before” was that Luminar had promised they would refit the venue. At the end of the day, with the lights on, the place was a fucking toilet, but as a space — it remained the best space in London! It didn’t happen, we got disillusioned and Kiss stopped investing in the night. Luminar sold the venue, and the new owners didn’t want big radio promoted nights in there as it was changing its image — end of story!

Have you had many of the old Peach faithful contacting you about this momentous set?

All the time. There is a huge thing going on right now started by three of the Peach clubbers — it’s the ‘Bring back Peach Campaign’. It’s not that easy ‘cos Kiss own the brand!

Peach had a legendary musical combination which started off with house and prog, before moving through trance and harder dance, and breaks. Do you think that more clubs in this day and age should take note?

You forgot Darren Pearce’s awesome breakbeat sets between 12 and 2! And abso-fucking-lutely! Every club should take note of what we did! Then we might still have a fucking scene!

Which djs and producers from that era would you like to see make a return to the forefront?

Any that have moved forward with the times really. I’d would like to see more from Hardfloor for example. I saw them in Switzerland 2 years ago and they were the bollox!

I know it’s quite a difficult one to answer, but could you single out your three greatest Peach moments for us?

The two birthdays with Oaky, all my own birthdays and the closing night! Oh my God!

What is the one Peach classic that you’ve been asked to play more than any other over the years?

That is way too difficult to answer — soz!

How do you feel about the state of trance music in 2006?

It’s deffo on its way back. New plug-ins and new producers make for new innovative music and that is what is happening right now.

And what’s going on in your world currently? What’s keeping you busy?

Well to be honest, it isn’t what it was, but it is looking up again. I have 28 radio shows worldwide a month, and I live in the studio. Finally getting round to doing good work in my own studio without an engineer. Just done a collab with Nicholas Bennison and one with Pulser. Gig-wise, I am abroad more than I am here, but would love to be getting more trance gigs in London. I set up a new myspace in July (check out (www.myspace.com/djgrahamgold) and that has had over 8000 hits, so I am happy about that.

More: In this fickle world of dance music, weak tracks and DJs do not stand the test of time. Only the strong survive. As the evolutionary process continues, the 2-bit throwaways get left behind while the truly great live on to fight another day. This is Heat Evolution: Natural Selection – another huge night of hard dance classics at Koko that will showcase only the biggest and best tracks from between 1995 and 2001, played by DJs who still remain relevant and popular in 2006.

HeatUK is still immensely proud of the hard dance scene in 2006 – but we couldn’t resist going back in time to revisit a golden era for harder music. Marc French and Steve Blake, legends of the London club scene, take us way back to 1995 and 1996 – showing us the infectious roots of the hard dance sound that were being formed at the time. An extra-special Peach Classics set comes from Graham Gold, bringing back memories of 1997 and of one of the best club nights the country has ever seen. 1998 was one of trance’s finest years, and there is no-one better than our very own Ian Betts to serve up a set of huge euphoric anthems from this amazing period. King of Camden Palace Phil Reynolds serves up some classic UK hard dance, 1999 style, with a rare K90 DJ set taking us back to his 2000. We are also immensely happy to finally have the Dark Destroyer aka Paul Glazby back at HeatUK after a long absence – tearing the heart out of the Koko dancefloor with a savage 2001 set. And to top it all off, the bright young hope that is Greg Brookman will be performing his awesome A.L.I.V.E. PA – giving us an exclusive taste of some big Future Classics!

Upstairs we have DirtyFunkySexy serving up tasty house and electro beats, with Forever and Torque going head to head for more hard dance anthems. Come and celebrate the start of the festive season the HeatUK way – with a night of timeless classics in one of the country’s most revered venues.

It was as much about the variety of the music there for me with Peles sets and Daren Pearce getting me into breaks as much as the headliners and trance.

My God-such kind words-thank you all soooooooo much!! Then I hope this will make you happy!!
A New Years Eve tribute to Peach-THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN!!!!!!!!!!

Think chic, think exclusive (without exclusive prices!!) think covered heated gardens, think boutique, think wow, think different, think no long queues for bars or cloakroom, think no rip off, think the best music you ever heard, think guaranteed priced mini cabs to take you home, think you an 399 of your mates altogether for a special kind of night, think of the best Friday nights of your life all wrapped up in one New Years Eve - think the kind of party you always wanted, think no miserable security, think midnight fireworks, think Carnival, think Notting Hill, think right next to tube station, think no losing your mates in some big cold arena, think this is where I really want to be.

There were a lot of Peach New Years Eve’s I never did, because I couldn’t be party to £50 ticket prices, expensive bars and not a lot all else for your money.

So when this opportunity came up to bring all the Peach residents back together for possibly one night only in the funkiest bar/club with it’s gorgeous outdoor covered heated gardens-a setting totally unique-I couldn’t resist it!! So I called Kate from Still Moving and she came and checked the venue out and totally agreed with me. With only one ticket price of just £20, below club bar prices (water at £1.50, Miniature chilled Champagne at just £5), this is an event I am so excited about!!

House and breaks in the garden, trance in the main room, with Graham Gold, Darren Pearce, Dave Lambert, Pele and more to be confirmed.

This event is strictly limited to 400 people, the perfect amount of people to get the party started right and the New Year too of course!!!!

Watch out for on sale date of tickets and full details and pics of the venue on a website near you soon!!
