2006 round-up with the Frantic 0101 main room DJs

Reported by benz / Submitted 13-12-06 22:49

Woot, it’s almost Christmas! Which also means it’s almost New Year’s! Which basically means we’ve got three weeks of shit-hot parties, drinking, gorging on food and general merriment to look forward to. 2006 has been a very exciting year for dance music however you look at it — the worldwide takeover of electro and minimal, the problems with the police in various London clubs, the digital download revolution fully getting into its swing, the warehouse revival, more festivals taking place than ever before and another great season in Ibiza were amongst the headlines. As the year draws to a close, we rounded up the main room DJs playing at Frantic 0101 at Hidden on New Year’s Day to give us their brief highlights of 2006. Full highlights coming in their forthcoming biographies...

Alex Kidd

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

I gave so many such a good caining. It has to be a tie: Walt — ‘Let The Music Play’ and Alex Kidd & DBD — ‘Money Shot’.

If you could choose one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Again a tie! Frantic NYD because smashing Koko up has been one of my favourite London moments, and Planet Love in Ireland because it was such a massive buzz on the Goodgreef stage.

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

I’d have to give that to Joe in the office at AKHQ, because although he needs a good kick up the arse sometimes, he’s helped me achieve a lot this year.

And what about your dj/producer of the year? and no, you can’t vote for yourself!

I think I’d have to say Zany and Walt, they’ve both blown me away this year.

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

“I fuckin’ love Alex Kidd, I wanna marry him” (whilst pointing at Eddie
Halliwell on the decks last week at Big Re-Union)!

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

For me, I will remember it as the year of long weekends, painful Monday mornings and some of the happiest days of my life!

Greg Brookman

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

Infected Mushroom ‘Elation station’ — Beat Hackers remix.

If you could choose one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Supernova at Brixton Academy. That gig was a real buzz to play and the crowd were fantastic.

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

My mate Sean[y Sean]. He stood under the tornado that hit Kensal Rise recently and survived! What a hero!

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

Gleave.

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

“Alright geez, can you play a tune? Dunno what it’s called but it goes da naa dee daa dee da de daa!?”

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

A.L.I.V.E!

Andy Whitby

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

Bliss Inc. — ‘Faith’ (Andy Whitby remix). I did it especially for my AW5 Mix, and the feedback has just been immense. It’s one of those tracks that I know will get any party rocking when I play it.

If you could choose one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Global Gathering, closing the Contagious Stage on the Saturday. 3000 nutters flock around the stage, and everything just seemed right. It was one of those moments you tell your friends about for years, and one I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

Man of the year would have to be Will Paterson. Woman of the year is Chloe Leeks. Anyone who can keep my hectic life in order deserves it, and they have been an inspiration to me from the beginning.

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

DJ — Cally Gage: the fastest rising female DJ in our scene, and instead of playing filth like the rest of them, pioneers her own sound. She’s quite fit as well!

Producer — Technikal. My love for Alf has always been strong, but this year has showed he’s more versatile and talented than half the producers in our scene put together. Embracing psy trance elements and sounding crisper than ever now he’s using Cubase, old Bamford never lets me down.

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

Well, I get a lot of funny stuff said to me, but the ones that really made me giggle were:

“Is it true you record all your tracks at the same speed so you don’t have to mix?”

or

“Are you gay?”

or

“Will you shag my sister please?” (Guy)

or

“I’ve just cum on the dancefloor because of you” (Girl)

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

I’d say the influx of badly-made electro tunes crossing over to the charts, bar ‘Put Your Hands Up’. I love how each year there’s a new ‘sound’ for consumers to buy into, resulting in things like ‘The Best Electro Anthems In The World Ever Volume 1’. Then everyone moves onto the next thing. Anyone remember Garage? What happened to it?

It got subsumed by grime and dubstep Andy! Everyone knows that! Oh and loads of people got shot and that…

Stevi D

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

‘Black Spider’, with a Van Halen Remix.

If you could one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Hard House Academy Main Stage filling in for Alex Kidd, 25th February. It was only for 30 minutes, but the main stage of Brixton Academy is any DJ’s main goal. It feels like it was still last weekend; I loved every second of it!

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

Phew, don’t know where to start, Phil Reynolds always fcuk’s the place up no matter what party, Whitby is all over it like there’s no tomorrow (Whitby’s World is a crazy world), Steve Hill’s London sets this year were all off the hook and Eddie Halliwell’s Radio One slot is simply flawless.

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

This goes without saying — Technikal all the way!

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

“My gran’s a fan of your demo.”

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

Phat up coming productions, flawless venues such as Renaissance and loads more to revealed at the Frantic 0101 party between Stevi D vs Hoopz.

Cally Gage

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

One of the tunes I haven’t stopped playing this year is ‘Hybridize’ by Lee Pasch — it’s absolutely awesome and a track I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing.

If you could choose one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Oh God, this is hard — there honestly have been so many this year. I think it would have to be my birthday weekend though, back in April! I had a pretty busy schedule, as it was a bank holiday weekend, but every gig was just amazing — Pam’s House in particular! Just because when I finished my set, they carried me on stage and got everyone to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me, lol! Oh and also Global Gathering as well — that was incredible! Sorry, I know that’s two!

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

I would love to say Andy Whitby, but that would be for other reasons as well, haha! I think someone who has always been very consistent, is Mr. Matt Pickup. He is such a great guy but also an amazing DJ, you just can’t help but dance to what he’s playing, because he has so much energy behind the decks. He’s great to watch and someone I’d definitely keep my eye out for — we love you Matt, haha.

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

One of my favourite producers has got to be Lee Pasch, he just churns out quality tracks all the time, but unfortunately he doesn’t really produce hard house anymore. Another producer that I’ve always rated and I always play at least one of his tracks in every set is Technikal (aka Alf Bamford). What he produces is just my sort of style and he gets better with each track as well — it’s great.

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

I’m not really sure about that, no-one has really said anything funny — except that they’re surprised I’m a girl (that’s before they’ve met me, obviously)!

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

I think it will be remembered for the new-breed of hard house DJ. This year has seen so many new faces come through, it’s quite unreal, but it’s definately what the scene needed to move forward – without the new faces, I feel that the scene would have been quite limited in where it would have been able to go. Everything needs a bit of new energy injected into it every now and again — it’s what keeps us all on our toes!

Hoopz

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

There have been so many wicked tunes brought out this year! Technikal has been on fire all year as have Phil York and Kevin Energy so it’s a tough choice... it’s going to have to be Phil and Kev together — ‘We Can Hear It’! Awesome stuff.

If you could one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Would have to be my first ever Frantic set back in August for Frantic 9! It was just awesome, the crowd were well up for it and the tunes just rolled out of the box!

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

Man of the year would have to go to my best mate Jonny for putting up with me moaning 24/7 and supporting me all the way through what has been a manic but wicked 12 months!

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

That’s harsh not being able to vote for me! Haha especially as it is well known that us DJs apparently like to get our egos aired once in a while! This year my producer would have to be Technikal — by far he has churned out anthem after anthem — and my DJ would have to be Cally Gage cause I’m still yet to hear her drop a mix anywhere!

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

I was standing next to my best mate Jonny and someone came up to me and asked if he was Gaz West aka Dark By Design!

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

I’d like to think the year I made my break through cause that’s what ill remember it for! But seriously... my friend Paul who unfortunately lost his life this year. For me it’s going to be remembered for all the happy memories me and my friends have about him! And for the fact he loved it more than anyone...

Digital Kid

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

An old one but I still love it — Succargo’s ‘Get It Higher’.

If you could one gig from the year to relive — which would it be and why?

That’s a really tricky one. Hmmm I would have to say Nuclear Audio 2 at The Masque in Liverpool. The atmosphere was amazing and it was my first time playing there. Wicked night.

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

Colin Calderwood up to now for the job he’s done at my beloved Nottingham Forest! Ha Ha Ha...

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

Switch is the man for me this year!

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

I was in Storm one night when some lad came up to me and told me he was Digital Kid... I found that quite amusing!

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

The electro boom!

James Condon

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

‘Acidy Overdrive’ by Nish on Doof Doof Traxx. It’s the Dave Joy Remix which is off the hook! I will definitely be dropping it on NYD so just listen out for the electric guitar break and then watch the dance floor go off big time.

If you could one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

The one event that really stands out has to be the first Nu Religion. It was my first solo, main room, peak time set and I tell you what the room was electric when I came on and the ravers were so up for it! It’s got to be the best buzz ever playing to clubbers like that! Roll on NYD at Hidden, solo set main room! You knows it!

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

My main woman has got to be my girfriend Gemma for putting up with me eating, sleeping and shitting dance music for the last god knows how long.

My main man has to be my best mate Max. He comes to all me gigs and most of the time drives me all over the country.

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

DJ of the year is going to be Rob Tissera after seeing him at the Tidy Weekender 10. That guy knows how to rock a dance floor!

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

I can’t remember what event it was but this little cybered-up guy come over to me and asked if I had met his girlfriend which I replied “no I don’t think I have”, so he brought his girl over and she said, “hello, do you know where I can get those little stuffed Badgers from?” I replied “no, sorry I don’t” and she just turned round and walked off and this little guy said, “isn’t she great?” Ha ha well it made me laugh anyway and I have seen them at events since then and they both now have a one of those little Badgers.

Wtf! And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

The year Noel Edmonds made a TV come back with Deal Or No Deal... I couldn’t really think of anything else ha ha!

Little Gem

What’s the one tune you just couldn’t stop playing in 2006?

Defo got to be Marco V ‘Red Blue Purple’ — what a tune!

Good choice Gem. If you could one gig from the year to relive, which would it be and why?

Too many, they’ve all been great… but I reckon the whole Wildchild Ibiza trip topped it all.

Who is your man or woman of the year and why?

My man of the year would have to be my Dad! He’s had major surgery this year, but has come out the other side fighting fit, bless him!

And what about your DJ/producer of the year? And no, you can’t vote for yourself!

I’d have to go for Marco V, just for his sheer diversity and talent.

What’s the funniest thing a clubber has said to you all year?

The funniest thing a clubber has said to me this year is, ‘I painted my bathroom blue because of you’ Haha, how funny! [Blue is Gem’s favourite colour for those of you who haven’t realised!]

And finally — what do you think the year of 2006 will be remembered for?

The year 2006 will be remembered for lots of things… dodgy weather, dodgy politics, dodgy hairstyles, ha ha!

Happy New Year everyone! Gem XX
