Tim Shaw does SNAT

Reported by Jazzy / Submitted 24-05-07 20:13

Tim Shaw has been making his way and his name through the crowded hard dance scene for a good few years now. With a fair few releases and some great sets under his belt, his is a name that maybe isn’t spoken of enough just yet.

Under the DNG guise he represented himself with the sounds of Karim, OD404 and RR Fierce. However he soon needed to broaden the music he was playing and so it wasn’t long before his own productions were to follow. After having some well-received tracks on labels like Tuff Tracks and Arktik, his own label Ricochet Recordings kicked off. Returning to grace the Twist decks again, for SNAT this Saturday, regulars will know already of this talent from Derby but just in case you don’t here’s a quick run down.

How long have you been DJing and what first got you into it?

I’ve been playing in clubs since around 2000. I used to play hard house back to back with my dad, we went out under the name “Banshee Boys”. Due to a difference in musical tastes as I preferred the harder sound and the fact we are both as stubborn as each other we split and in 2001 I started to play out on my own as DNG.

Where did you play your first ever set?

Sunday Roast in Burntwood along side Ian M. It was a wicked little club run by Nick Lunn who then went on to start Storm.

How did you first get into the scene?

I first got into the scene a while before I began producing. My dad got me into the music by giving me Live In Tel Aviv by Tony De Vit to listen to while on holiday with my mum. I was blown away and got hooked on what I was hearing, so long before I made my first track I was raving on the dance floors of Sundisesential and Insomniaczs. As I got more into the music and playing I then decided I wanted to take it further and start writing my own tunes.

How is the production side of things going then?

The production is going really well. I’ve just done a remix for JP and Jukesy and OD404 and I’m up to the third release on my own label, Ricochet Recordings, with that out very soon. Its taken me a while to find a sound I’m happy with and I’m very excited about the music I’ve been writing lately. I’m in a very happy place at the moment and because of that hope to get a lot more release out on Ricochet this year.

How would you best describe you musical sound?

Hard to sum up as I honestly don’t know myself, it seems to be ever evolving, but something along the lines of tuff, hard, dirty, techno, house music.

If you had to put your ultimate DJ dream team of 5 members who would you choose?

Tony De Vit
Carl Cox
Karim
Richie Hawtin
Steve Thomas

Who have you most enjoyed collaborating with production wise and why?

I’ve just done a track with Frank Farrell which has gone really well. We did it at my studio and he came very prepared. He’s into my sound and I’m into his so we bounced ideas off each other with ease and are both really happy with the track., watch this space for that one.

You’re set to play at the 2nd Saturday Night At Twist party on the 26th May, what surprises do you have up your sleeve for the set?

I’ve been working on loads of fresh material. It doesn’t sound like normal hard house, it’s certainly different and I think its going to rip that sound system apart.

You have a residency at Twist, if you had to describe Twist with just 3 words, what would they be?

Absolutely Fucking Amazing!

Describe the ONE moment in your DJing career that has really stood out for you.

It has to be my Twist debut. I was totally blown away on my first visit as a punter by the sheer quality of the music and DJs that played there, so to be part of the team is really special to me.

If you had to choose one Simpsons character to most describe yourself, who would it be and why?

I’m not too clued up on the Simpsons, I don’t really watch it too much, but I would have to be that crazy guy who drives the school bus and who’s always wearing headphones seems about the best, crossed with Barney!

If you had the choice to play at any festival across the world, which would it be and why?

Dance Valley in Amsterdam. I’m set to go check it out this year as I’ve seen and heard so many good things about it. Huge systems to a massive audience and its in Amsterdam, nuff said! If that fails to impress, then Global Gathering. I had such a wicked time there last year.

What are your interests apart from DJing?

I like to try and keep fit so go to the gym regularly. I also love cars, food and just generally having a bloody good time with my friends.

What made you choose to make your sets comprise of all your own material?

99% of the set is my own, though it depends really. If someone sends me a good track and I think it will fit into my set alongside my material then I will drop it in. Some crowds are not as understanding and willing to hear a different sounding set to the norm so I don’t always play the same in other clubs as I do at Twist. You’ve just got to judge the crowd really. I am just so glad that the Twist crowd give people like me the opportunity to showcase what we are about.

And finally, do you prefer curry or Chinese?

Chinese for sure!

More: Saturday Night At Twist

We knew it would be good but even we did not know just quite how well Saturday at Night at Twist would be received. A new venue, can always be a little frightening and some venues take a while to get used to but the first S.N.A.T exceeded everyone’s expectations and everyone there felt like they were at the start of something new. Something fresh. Something exciting.

The calls for 'please can you do this every month or even every week' were listened to but Twist HQ know that too much of a good thing can be bad so.......we have decided to hold the SNATs every other month.

We will also re-launch our other party - Blast that will fill the 4th Saturday every other month.

Area is the sexy new stylish home of hard dance clubbing in London.
Welcome to the future
