Ahoy out there, it's the good Captain Tinrib

Reported by Harderfaster / Submitted 19-08-07 22:53

Avast me harties. Welcome on board the good ship HarderFaster as we set sail in commemoration of 10 years of hard horse and celebrate the life of an old sea dog. Your skipper Peg Leg Matt has had many a run in with the man they know as Captain Tinrib and yarns of his legendary exploits wash around like tales from a fish wife! But fear ye not many of those same tales are true. Come with us now as we hunt the seven seas in search of the Superfish treasure.

And it’s a treasure chest to behold with many a scoundrel on its trail as news of its contents reach far and wide. But if you listen closely I’ll let you in on a secret, one that you must promise never to tell on pain of death. If ye seek the cache, make your way underground near the day of the 24th of this month, follow the ancient markings you will find on the walls to the place they call Brixton. There, if you turn left and walk 500 lengths, will you find a cave marked by coolboxes of a sort. Cross the doorkeepers palm with gold to enter then truly you will have found the riches!

You're boarding the Fridge yet again for the 10th birthday. Why is it such an important and special venue for you and Superfish?

The Fridge is the venue that launched Superfish! into sea monster night club world. Our first night there was one of their busiest nights they had ever seen, boasting 1700 through the door and an unheard of queue going past the town hall in Brixton. For our events we put on a show rather than a few banners and dress the club with some blow up dolls, its a theatre / cinema with a stage converted into a club, what better plaice to put on an event that is a spectacular in both sight and sound.

After the recent reported troubles there, what exactly is being done to keep the scurvy seadogs out?

I've been in New Zealand over the past year so didn't know the full extent of what was happening until I came over and heard all the stories from the horse’s mouth and what a fine mess too. The club had slipped from its former glory.

To find out how it could be fixed we had meeting with the new management, production, sound guys & security. They are all 100% behind fixing everything and this has happened. It’s all in plaice and all that's needed now is you. Check the HF forums here for full details.

We can safely say that all the problems are over at the Fridge. It’s back on track and ready for Superfish! 10.

You've also organised some special grog prices, why have you gone this extra nautical mile?

It’s a Birthday celebration. You gotta have a deal, don’t ya? I remember last year while over in the UK, I went to a few different clubs and you needed a mortgage for a double vodka red bull. I had a word with the new manager Colin about this and he'd already decided to lower the prices to a more reasonable club rate. I asked if we could go further with a deal for everyone on grog for ye Pirates out there and they’ve agreed going all out with Pirate Town rates on a guest beer. Don't get me wrong, it’s a nightclub, not ASDA but we looked from the rigging and crows nest and concluded the lights, sound and overall atmosphere was far better at the club than at a supermarket!

What other extras can Superfish! lubbers expect on the night?

I've been told I'm mad, but this isn't nuttin' new is it. A ship and rafts filling up the stage? If we've come this far to put on a show, then it’s gotta be done properly. Gonna be a couple of hours of swashbucklin' sea fairin' adventures up there at the helm, with something new on stage and loads of new forthcoming Tinribdigital releases fired from our canons. Piratetechniques too. Blow em to smithereens!

Just how easy or difficult have the last 10 years of Superfish! been?

They are as easy or as difficult as you make them I guess. Having too much on doesn't help, the end of the 90s rings a bell with everything being pretty wild out there! There are always ups and downs running any event really. Right now, being on an even keel and more knowledgeable of the seven seas helps incredibly. We've had plenty of time to plan this year’s escapade and we’re having a lot of fun doing it, that's why we do it!

Who has been key in steering the good ship Superfish! and why?

Everyone. Everyone has played and still plays a role in Superfish! as a party night where both the people involved and the party people coming to our events enjoy the music, enjoy the party, meet new people, wonder what the mermaid is going on up on the stage and leave the party on a high. All the DJs know what music to play to develop and flow the sound throughout the night.

The production team as we'll reveal here is Jason Nuroptics & Stevie B. They put a huge effort into making each show more special and different from the last. The finger is pointing at you guys right now here, you gotta get me ship up to scratch as planned at the Shipwrights Arms, there in ye olde London Bridge!

Then there's the promotion & front of house team who are always friendly out there at the entrance. The Nun is back this year out front, blessing the queue & guestlist. The skipper's mum is also in on this one. She's decided its time to party. Will she make it up on deck? Only time will tell. It’s happened before! Last time as a raver swatting cowgirl!

Some cynics are saying the hard scene is dead, yet you are just as passionate about hard horse as you were a few years ago. What do you say to the old timers who feel that the horse has already bolted?

You need to look at it as a passion and as a hobby. That’s how I see it. This is what it was in the first plaice for myself, then it became a business. With a clear head, space and love of the music you can never lose anything.

You've recently relaunched Tinrib as Tinrib Digital. How are the seas of cyberspace treating you? It must be very different navigating a digital vessel than the landlubbers label of a few years ago?

I actually prefer it. No middle men to deal with, giving me more time to the music. We have loads of new releases ready to come out. You just can't release all of them at once. There are still a few vinyl lovers out there, so, we've been licensing vinyl for release on labels such as Tidy Trax, Vicious Circle, Oktane etc before we put them out digitally. It’s far too tricky and complicated to release vinyl from New Zealand. I can't see the vinyl lasting much longer to be honest. Sad but true. There are no stores to physically buy them from, they are all closing down and I haven't seen one DJ in 2 years who has flown in to New Zealand even carrying a piece of vinyl. MP3 online is the way forward, it’s just gonna take people some understanding that if you don't support it and buy it, its not gonna be around anymore.

As part of Omega 3 with Dale Fairbairn (Butcher Boy) and Steve Arnold (Scuba Steve) you've been anchored in the studio making an artist album, Lost At Sea, due for release in October. How did you hook up with Dale and Steve? Is it tricky having three skippers in the studio or do you all know your plaice?

We all know our plaice. We all do our bit of homework and worked extremely well together when we worked at the 'Wheelhouse Studio', as you will all hear when the album is released. It has been the most exciting year in music making for myself as a skipper.

Hello Sailor!

...Them there local natives decided to give him there Cap'n a run and create a release with the old sailor. This release continued on to two and they all rubbed themselves down with some of that fishy oil stuff......... and Omega 3 was born. Try it, its good for you! “We be better not t’mess about 'ere...” the skipper advised, “We now be in New Zealand we do and how about we venture into the unknown, create a whole album, put it in the ships log, before they all be cursed and Lost At Sea forever?,” the mad sea dog barked.....

Is there a concept behind the album or are you trawling anywhere the best catch comes up? When is the new album due in dry dock?

Tis a journey 'cross the broad sides of them there many a hard dance music boat of the day, the full spectrum of 15 years at sail, voyaging from the euphoria of trance through to the pounding hard sounds of the end of the finest battle of the fittest at 155bpm with our ships hooverwhores revealed to the full. Our cannon's main aim is a sonic pleasure for getting you ready to go out or getting you to the party by car or by boat. The choice be yours, fixing you into the right space for the rest of your many nights at sea! It be due to set sail at the end of October 2007 as mixed CD, MP3 Download, and Limited Edition Tinrib Digital Picture Disc EP on vinyl!

You've been involved recently in a dual at dawn on HF. What drove this and do you think this is a reflection of the scene in general?

I had so many private messages asking what the hell's going on, I felt to save time I should put up the facts. You can read it all in here at HF and I think most people can make their minds up and work out what's what. Just couldn't believe the respect and the excuse given to someone who has flown from the other side of the world to perform for them! Enough said from so called Greedyguts! Was a good promo for us all too. Thanks Stevey lad. People who know me, know what I'm about!

Has your mission to colonise the kiwis with hard horse been successful and have your Superfish! parties lead to any major catches?

The hard horse is already there and never wasn't it here. There are plenty of crews over there putting on parties including, NRGized, Beserk, Disturbed Nation, Fevah, Base Nightclub, Space Nightclub and are all at the forefront of the scene. We did a Superfish! in Christchurch last March. Plans are underway to coincide with our new Lost At Sea release and 10th Birthday to tour New Zealand and do an event in each city at the end of October.

Christchurch is considered the most Limey of the New Zealand cities, with it even boasting its own River Avon and Christchurch Cathedral. Do you ever get homesick for the real deal? Do you have to cast your net far to find like-minded schools or are feeding frenzies few and far between?

Never. This plaice is a paradise found. Anywhere is what you make of it. I have a new home, a beautiful wife to be, Sarahbelle and a 'lil Fish on the way. We're getting married in the Cathedral there. We' ve even got the all clear to dress me up as Captain Cook, the founder of their lands (if you discount the Maoris’ – Ed), from the Dean of the Cathedral. The story to get married in the cathedral was an adventure in itself. Rooster Jon is now in town and friends with the Dean. The wedding has been postponed to a year in October 2008 (Spring in NZ) due to our ‘lil Fish. Plus there’s gonna be a free night club party in the evening. All are welcome who make it from me motherland.

Have you become a bogun and started eating fush and chups? What other forms of entertainment do you have shipwrecked on the far isles? Is it true that the dance scene is having a resurgence in New Zealand now that people can get their fishfood legally and the herbal high companies have money to burn?

Well it has the best seafood in the world here. Bluff Oysters are just down the road. (Not too keen on them raw, but the chippy does them in batter and they taste amazing.) Then there's the Belgian Beer Café, Torenof. Wow! Their Pacific Mussels are huge. One pot is a full meal. Washed down with the strongest Belgian grog in the world, its tough getting home! Then in spring you get Whitebait coming up the rivers. It’s like gold dust, have never seen these exported from NZ. Try them next time you visit. Very good for you. They are the truffles of the Fish world!

There are enough parties to go round too. If there isn't one, you can make one happen. They seem to sail round friends to friends houses. Amazing plaice for a party. Loads of space and lovely people. As for herbal high companies, yes, they have dough to burn. They sponsor our events when we put them on. We could have one of them intermission girls with a tray dishing out inside the club. Crazy plaice.

Tinribdigital are currently running a remix competition, with the deadline being 31st August. Wasn't it via a comp like this that you managed to net young Weirdo? What clues can you give for young flounders trying to make a plaice for themselves?

It certainly was by a competition such as this one we reeled and netted Weirdo onto our good ship. Are there any new Weirdos out there? We'll be discovering really soon. A sure winner is a track that sounds new in this day and age!

Just why is Weirdo so reclusive?

Reclusive in what way? His flask of tea and biscuits before he performs? Ask if you can join him! We are quite civilised up there on stage you know. I was down in Christchurch (UK) 2 weeks ago and found the fella with his wife and baby sipping tea in a café bar. Weirdo is on a progression of Normalisation. Reclusive to some, a genius to others!

How important has his unique sound been to Tinrib and Superfish! over the years?

Weirdo gave us and still gives us his own sound. Mixed emotion goose bump making music. He is the church of Tinrib's high priest. He will take you to the top of the spire and beyond. He has embarked on a fresh journey of discovery for our new Tinrib digital saga too!

Hello Sailor!

…Weirdo has been summoned, the voyage has begun, Weirdo's Phantasm Ghost Ship be settin' sail from ol London Town, for the quest and adventure, thru the seven seas of Tinrib Digital World.

Phantasm it be, the first installment of our Ghost ship adventurwhore.

Weirdo's boat be prepared, his crew have pulled anchor and straight to full sail out o' harbour, this be what they plays while them there ghosts sneak thru the motherlands radar, out to the open sea! They see no ghosts, they see <arrrgggh> Phantasm!

Next up be The Krakken.

In an interview on here last year you said that you were keen to dabble in other styles of music, such as chill out and rock / indie. Have you had much of a chance to cast your nets over these far waters yet?

I be starting on a few different styles. But I be putting nearly all of my time into our Pure Artist Album, The Lost At Sea Caper.

Made a technoeyelectrotechdiscobreakbeat number the week before I set sail for the UK with Robbie Glass from NZ. Kubrick's Corona. This is very different and it’s hard to categorise really.

There are a few other psy trancey numbers on the boil below deck in the skipper's Mackerel folders. Just a few bits to do for completion. Definitely up on the harder side of their sound! No point pissing about wondering when something's due to happen!

All will be revealed when we get back to NZ world.

Thank you all for all your support over the years, see you at Superfish! for the best party yet!

Your skippwhore x

...THE SKIPPER IS BACK FROM NZ RE-LAUNCHING HIS GENRE DEFINING HARD NRG LABEL TINRIB DIGITAL.
THE PIONEERS OF THE HARD DANCE SCENE, TINRIB, GIVE YOU THE BEST OF 12 YEARS IN HARD DANCE MUSIC.
COME CELEBRATE OUR 10TH BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH ANOTHER NIGHT OF MADNESS TO REMEMBER...

Performing Live On Stage Performing from the Skipper's Galleon:

Captain Tinrib (His final farewell Live Show, on his now yearly tour of the UK. He's saving the best 'til last! More unreleased music from the skipper! He's got loads down in the hold.)

Special guest on stage - Nadia the Nun, with speech before the Captain's performance. Our Nun will be strapped to the front of the ship during the show as the boat's figurehead. Thanks for this Nunhead. You're a diamond.

This is destined to be voted the best Hard Dance Act Performance of the year. Who builds a complete stage to perform from?

Just hope the biased awards acknowledge the performance! Ha! Probably not if they have to fly the skipper in! He sails and it be rough in them there winter months top side anyway! We could always set up our own 'Quality, World Hard Dance Awards!' and fly everyone in for the Skipper's wedding at Christchurch Cathedral next March 8th 2008! You're all invited - free entry.

Anyone who attends the club wearing a pirate outfit will be handed a specially mixed Captain Tinrib CD with loads of his new Tinrib Digital Releases on it.

Weirdo - Tinrib's master of all things gospel is back on board our good ship Tinrib. Our lad will be taking over the helm after the worthy old sea dogs performance, when the Nun is set free to return to the dancefloor! The ghost ship Phantasm shall sail!

His new music is not to be missed.

Production:

In true Superfish! style, we are going all the way on this one. The masters of all things productions, Nuroptics & Karma productions are up to complete the Skipper's challenge! Something the UK scene hasn't seen before, just in the theatres...

The Fridge's stage is gonna be converted into the Captain's everyday life at sea experience. The Captain's Galleon is being sailed into the center stage with huge screens playing the swashbucklin' hero's adventure over the past year at sea. The rafts are being laid down either side with his beautiful pirate wench type girl dancers. Nothing is being left here with broadside battles and of course his piratetechnics. Not for the faint hearted. If you don't like fire and plunderin', ask your mum if its safe for you to come down to the front.

The Second Room: (Not gonna call it an Arena like the 'cool' way is these days. Its another room innit!!!

Totally Techno is the name of the game here. Brighton's longest running Techno event.

The Fridge:

After recent events over the passed few months at the Fridge the Captain has had meeting to rectify the problems they have had there.

The Fridge in it's Hay Day, when Superfish! was born, had its busiest ever 1st night with 2300 attending. The club back then was managed by Gary.

Gary is back on board at the Fridge as manager, his goal is to turn the club around after its past problems with previous management.

We also met security and all the ringleaders who were causing the trouble have been arrested by the police and have been barred for life.

Due to all these circumstances and in the interest of safety, the age limit for entry is now over 21s. A thorough search will happen on entry and belts are not allowed in the club. Be prepared. All this may seem over the top to some, but ensures a quality friendly atmosphere as there is with all the previous Superfishes over the past 10 years. There has never been a problem with us.

The Fridge is being turned around and is gonna be back to its former glory ready for Superfish! 10.

Freebies:

The 1st 100 patrons through the doors receive a specially mixed Captain Tinrib CD with loads of his new Tinrib Digital Releases on it. This also goes for all you swashbucklin' Adventurers in full Pirate outfits.

So, you flew all around the World just for me eh, what aboput all your other gigs and this party?

I offered you an alternative gig for a reduced fee coz it was an afterparty, Captain Greedy c*nt wanted too much. End of story.
The scene has changed Captain. Get with it.
Most of my lot are steering well away.
This venue is dead and no major promoter that respects its clubbers would touch it with with a rotten oar.

From: Timmy Whiz on 20th Aug 2007 13:24.11
Wicked stuff Captain Thumbs up sounds like a party not to be missed (although i am Cry) with all the stage set up and shinanagins you have planned. Congratulations on your 10 years of superb parties and amazing productions Claps Hands I wish you the very best for the 10th birthday and have no doubt in my mind that this will be an monumentous party that will see the fridge back to its former greatness and will show others that it's not dead forever Smile It's a sham some plebs cant keep their bitterness to the forums at least and have to try and get their bitchyness in on your Feature Frown

From: Steve Twist on 20th Aug 2007 13:34.24
had they kept me out of the feature i would not have commented.
At the end of the day the Captain is lying in misleading people into believing he flew half way around the World just for my party. he was already here for a number of dates and for this party.
However I do wish him good luck with this party.

I am not bitter however greed is also not something I am fond of.

From: Allan With 2 Ls on 20th Aug 2007 14:03.40

Cool feature and best of luck with Superfish. The Captain's new live show rocked Ireland at the weekend and you're all in for a treat.

From: Anastasia_k on 21st Aug 2007 02:00.17
I highly doubt you flew half way round the world especially for Twist. More like you were coming over here anyway and as you had a gig at twist put your travel dates back.

Good luck with superfish

From: Miss Riding on 21st Aug 2007 05:28.25
Brilliant interview, brilliant guySmile Superfish! will be the business. Well done Captain Tinrib x

From: Captain Tinrib on 21st Aug 2007 11:54.17
Hi Anastasia, pm me if you are really that interested, I am on tour for 8 weeks with many gigs. All the gigs are booked before travelling to countries the other side of the world, when they are cancelled 2 weeks or 3 days before there is no way of filling in the dates. Not good when you get asked to play on that date by other promoters then have to say no I'm booked 'elsewhere', to find you're cancelled by the original party for any backward reason. Please, please, put a post on a forum if you need to chat about this old rubbish again. This is supposed to be an interview. The boards are the other button at the top. Cheers. x

From: Captain Tinrib on 21st Aug 2007 11:55.05
Thanks 4 all your positive input. See you on Friday.
