Mike Foyle Breaks Out for Electronic Sessions
Reported by Stu Cox

Mike Foyle has certainly made a name for himself over the last few years as a name you can rely on. From progressive trancer Space Guitar spotted by a certain Markus Schultz and promptly signed up to his Electronic Elements label, to Firefly, third in his piano-trance series which has just dropped on Armind Recordings along with a take-no-prisoners rework from tech trance man-of-the-moment Mark Sherry, this guy delivers anthems like your postman delivers the mail..
Between his own name, his various aliases such Andromeda, Statica and Bolt, plus numerous collaborations with the likes of the Signalrunners and Filo & Peri, Mike has put his hand to everything from smooth progressive trance to banging techno. His DJ sets are an affair just as eclectic, putting him in DJ booths from Bournemouth to Sheffield and from Prague to Hollywood.
On Friday 31st August, Mike's being reeled back in from his trips abroad to the south of England to appear at Bohemia in Cheltenham as the mighty ElectronicSessions go head-to-head with the resident house and breaks phenomenon Break Out for a storming night of electronic debauchery. Giving me a break from making the tea here at ES Towers, I got sent off to catch up with the man behind the magic to talk about jet-setting around the world, Big Brother and a certain smaller relative of the ostrich.
Electronic Sessions: Good day to you Mr Foyle. Where are you right now and what are you doing?
Mike Foyle: I'm at home in Leicester eating a Dip Dab sherbert thing!
You're originally from Southampton. Does that mean you know how to sail a yacht?
No actually! Lot's of my friends can but I never really went sailing, maybe one day!
I gather you've just got back from playing in North America, including a date in Canada plus a stop-off in Hollywood's notorious Circus Disco. How did it all go and what were the highlights?
I had a really great time in general! The gig in Winnipeg, Canada was amazing. I met loads of awesome people and the atmosphere was incredible. Loads of people going mental and a very happy promoter at the end of the night which is always nice to see. I think I had the best feedback that I have ever had from this gig. Circus was good as well, it was nice to meet Martin Roth again and BT, and the residents and fans there made me feel very welcome. I was generally treated very well and it looks likely that I will be heading back there in 2008.
I've seen some of the photos and I must say it looks amazing - in particular a certain hot young brunette who seems to feature in a lot of the pictures. Did you get lucky?
I'm afraid not, maybe next time!
But it wasn't all sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll of course - the trip was combined with a family holiday. Must have been nice to get some time away from the rockstar lifestyle?
My lifestyle is far from rock and roll, haha, but yeah it was fantastic seeing Canada and forgetting about everything for a couple of weeks. We drove through the Rockies and saw some amazing scenery and wildlife. I'd like to go back there again.
Going back a little bit further was your headline appearance on the dance stage at the LinnanJuhannus festival in Finland. Some crazy people the Finnish - was that your festival debut?
Yeah it was the first proper festival I've played at and it was really good fun. My stage looked out over the waterfront and I was there on their longest day, so the sunset turned straight into the sunrise without setting bellow the horizon, it was magical. Finnish people definitely know how to make the most of their short summers. I received a very warm welcome from them as well.
So then, I have to ask... what's this about an emu?
Haha, when I was a youngen, me and my best friend Al made a song about a blue emu hand puppet. He had no friends and looked deformed so all the other emus made fun of him. It warms my heart listening to it now! Nostalgic...
Right........ Anyway, if I gave you a million pounds what would you spend it on?
A campaign for World Peace. *Braces self*. Haha, nah I'm not really sure. I'd build myself a super duper studio, give some to charity and some to my friends and family, and spend the rest on a nice cozy house and car I expect.
Ok, I'll let you off that one. I'm on the dancefloor and you're on the decks, describe what I can hear pumping out of the in exactly 6 words.
Atmospheric, melodic, techy, trancey, tough, twisted. All at the same time!
Now with three of your tracks given the prestigious label of being "Tried & Tested" by Judge Jules on Radio 1, releases on some of the biggest labels in the scene and demand for remixes coming out of your ears, you're obviously very dedicated to your music. But what do you do in your spare time?
Well I'm a university student as well so I don't really have much spare time what with all the getting drunk and having house parties! I spend most of my spare time chilling out with my friends. I used to be a keen mountain biker but I don't really have the time for it anymore. I've also always been into random little circus-eque things like diablo’s and yoyos!
You heard it hear first - Mike Foyle coming soon to a Big Top near you! Hopefully at your tender age of 21 this shouldn't be of any immediate concern, but what do you want written for your epitaph?
I'd like to leave that job down to a close friend or family member. But hopefully that's not going to be an issue for a while yet!
Have you got sick of Love Theme Dusk yet?
It still has a place in my heart but if I remade it there are a thousand things I would change! I still play it out at a lot of my gigs and the response is always amazing!
Which one of the twins from this year's Big Brother would you rather have for a sordid night of passion away from home?
Amanda but they both irritate me somewhat.
It's time for the Desert Island Discs question: you know the drill; you, an island and 3 records. What are they?
I'd take an iPod or something because taking 3 records would be totally pointless! There would be nothing to play them on.
Ha ha. What should we expect to see from you in the next few months? Any particularly exciting gigs, tunes we should be looking out for or anything else you fancy plugging?
I'm going back to the Czech Republic twice in the next couple of months, they seem to like me there! Playing one gig in Prague and one in Ostrava at the famous Fabric club out there. I'm also going all the way out to Indonesia the week after ES for to play at a club called Centro. 20 hours there and 20 back not including the drive to and from the airport and checking in etc. It'll probably half kill me but I'm looking forward to it! In terms of tracks, I've recently been producing a lot of techier and darker stuff under the Bolt alias. You can check that out on Flutterspark Records. I'll be working on another piano trance number once I get a few unfinished bits out the way.
Indian or Chinese?
Indian always.
Restaurant or Take Away?
Restaurant
At the dinner table on Christmas Day, should paper hats be compulsory?
Sure, if you like?!
Cheltenham's resurfaced from the recent unfortunate weather and requests your presence for a party of epic proportions at Bohemia on the 31st of August. I designed the flyer... do you like it?
Yes Stu, it was beautiful, well done, have a gold star.
You're playing alongside Monster Tunes front man Brisky and Silver Planet hero Chris Salt, a heavyweight lineup indeed. What should we expect from your set? Will there be any emu's?
I'll probably leave the emu out, he's quite shy around big crowds of people! I haven't played in the UK for a while so I'm gonna go a bit mental I think. Lots of energy and madness!
Thanks for your time Mike, see you on the 31st!
Can't wait!
