Get Full On with Simon Patterson

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 23-10-07 17:34

What’s that over there?! The rampaging sound of Dogzilla perhaps? As one half of that rocking trance group, Simon Patterson has stamped his authority all over the world but that’s not to forget his fantastic ability to produce and DJ in his own right. That’s why if you’re very lucky you’ll be able to see him in action at the massive Full On Ferry.

Learning his trade at Radio 1 assisting Pete Tong and others in track selection, what Simon doesn’t know about dance music isn’t really worth knowing. It was smash hit “Without You” that launched and defined a new sound often copied but never bettered though many people will be surprised to hear when he’s by himself his sound differs quite a bit. The Ahoy stadium Rotterdam will rock to that sound on October 27th without a doubt so students of sound get those notepads ready as we find out more on Mr Patterson.

HF: Your sound as Simon Patterson can be very different to your Dogzilla sound. Why is that and how do you think your audience reacts to that?

SP: I do Dogzilla with Richie Kayvan who is predominately a rock producer so the feel is always from that production style. We try and fuse the best of what we are both about and meet down the middle. With my own stuff I just make what I play in clubs.

Rock seems to have influenced a number of genres and artists recently for example Infected Mushroom. Why do you think this has happened?

I think rock is so accessible. For me you can't beat the sound of guitar. It’s so real and raw sounding but can be also be so beautiful. Also bands are now really back in vogue and there are so there are many influences for new and old producers to take.

You’re continuing to develop Dogzilla with an Album and a live show, can you tell us more about these projects?

We are aiming to have an album done next year and also develop the live show, but most important for us is getting new material done. It’s very difficult getting together
to do stuff because we are both busy working on other things. Once we have something promote then the live show is an essential tool in doing this.

Chicane is doing it, so is Trentemøller, does the future of dance music lie in the hands of live artists using old instruments and new technology?

I think so; you open yourself up to massive audiences so it can only be a good thing. And it’s different.

You’ve worked closely on many shows on Radio 1. What do you think of the changes to the dance music schedule there and what does it mean for dance music in the UK?

I was quite surprised to see the changes. The Radio 1 dance schedule was really important in keeping the scene up to date with new producers, what was happening at club nights, what was on etc. With the shows being broadcast all on one day and some now very late at night, it makes it harder to catch things. I guess they are hoping that the listen again feature (online) will now prove its worth.

You’re appearing at Full On Ferry. Ferry is, of course, a world leading artist who has evolved his sound constantly over the years, how do you think you compare?

Ferry is probably one of, if not the most, successful trance producer in the world. Hes had so many hit records and he's constantly trying to be different with his sound. If I could achieve a quarter of what he has then I still wouldn't even compare with him.

What are you looking forward to the most at this event?

The chance of playing back to back with Ferry is going to be a very memorable experience. Just getting the chance to do that is unbelievable! I am also looking forward to catching the other artists he has playing with him.

The Ahoy is a massive venue. How do you think promoters in the UK can look to these events and take inspiration?

I think all promoters of big events need to take a look at how they re done in Holland. I have not been to one UK event that has even come close. Not only the organisation of events, but the stage set up, the lighting and everything else that comes with it. In Holland it’s an actual show, not just the putting on of a festival.

Dance music is continuing to grow around the world and you’ve played to some massive crowds, could you imagine 500,000 people like at FFWD in Rotterdam having it here?

I think it would be brilliant if we had that in the UK. People would love it and the culture is there to pull it off. I am not sure the police would find it easy controlling everyone though but if they can do it Rotterdam why not here? It would be incredible! I guess the love parade in Leeds was the closest we ever got to having something like that. Such a shame they didn't do it again.

DJs have been globetrotting for many years now. Slowly but surely and with the growth of low cost airlines clubbers are following. What do you think this means for global dance music?

I think it’s great and fresh. People are always looking to try different things and seeing new DJs. I think this is what develops the scene.

What can we expect from Simon Patterson in 2007?

I have 2 new tracks coming out in December through Spinnin and then next year I will have a vocal track coming out. DJ wise I am doing a tour of the US which I can’t wait for and loads of other good bits. I am also looking forward to playing back in the UK in December at Passion and Honeyclub; it’s been a while since I have played here, so it should be good!

More: With no less than seventeen years of studio experience, a double row of golden records on the wall, ten thousands of air miles earned as a DJ and his recent election as the number six DJ on the planet in the DJ Mag Top 100, Ferry Corsten is one of the greatest dance music artists in the world. His hits ‘Out Of The Blue’ from 1999 (as System F), ‘Gouryella’ from 1999 (as Gouryella), ‘Barber’s Adagio For Strings’ from 2000, ‘Punk’ from 2001, ‘Rock Your Body Rock’ from 2003, ‘Fire’ from 2006 and ‘Beautiful’ from 2007 (all recorded under his own name) have made dance floors around the world throb to his beats. Ferry’s most recent artist album ‘LEF’ is a hit everywhere - with the singles ‘Fire’, ‘Junk’ and ‘Beautiful’ – and it was one of the best-selling dance albums in America in 2006.

On 27 October, UDC will host a spectacular event around Ferry Corsten in the Rotterdam Ahoy’, with the theme ‘Masquerade’, referring to the masks Ferry has put aside. After having completely organised mega-events around Carl Cox (three editions) and Armin van Buuren (two episodes) in the legendary Ahoy stadium, UDC will again present a groundbreaking dance event with a top international artist. Full-On Ferry is on the one hand an event where the various musical facets of Ferry Corsten can be expressed; trance, techno and electro. On the other, it is a festive reunion of his fellow DJs and producers who, like Ferry, have produced music under a number of aliases. “I want to throw a big party with these artists, with an emphasis on partying. A dance event revolves around the experience of all of those present, not just one person. That’s why the co-operation with various other artists in a huge event like this appeals to me.”

Although Ferry Corsten is listed in history books as the most important originator of Dutch trance, he is an artist who is constantly pushing his musical boundaries in order to expand them. During Full-On Ferry, the emphasis will lie on the broad musical spectrum he represents as a DJ and producer. However, the owner of Flashover and Aleph Recordings labels emphasises that it is the total experience that is vital during this trend-setting event in the Ahoy stadium. The theme ‘Masquerade’ will be worked out to the smallest details in the decoration, visuals and performance acts. “The mysterious and exciting character of the masquerade party in the Ahoy stadium creates the same adventurous feeling that I experience during my studio work and DJ performances.”
