Brighton based DJ / producer James Fitch has been DJing for 11 years and in the past has been Trade resident in Valencia, main DJ for the Heineken Club Tour and infamous Marlboro Dance Tour resident. Currently you can find him at Prologue & Twitch at The Egg in London, Time at The Honey Club in Brighton, occasional stints for Hat Club plus a monthly slot at Spanish super club Guru in Valencia. James now focuses on his production skills with a release for Cayenne, teaming up with 90’s stadium-rave band Sunscreem for a rework of their anthem Perfect Motion. We catch up with him to talk about the single and what is in store for 2008.
Hi James how are you on this slightly warmer English afternoon?
Bloody cold! It feels like I’ve had my heating on for the last 10 months. Other than that I’m all good, full of energy to take on the New Year!
How is your New Year going?
Really good so far, all the hard work from last year is starting to be recognised at last. In the music industry it seems to work like that, things sometimes take so long to fall into place you can write a track and a year later it’s still not out but the remix you did 3 weeks ago is on sale everywhere. But the back log of tracks I have lined up can only mean an exciting year!
What made you write / produce Perfect Motion?
It was always one of my favourite tracks when I was younger and at the time I wrote the track everyone seemed to be doing these electro booties of their favourite tracks so I thought I’d do one just for me to play out. I gave it out to a few people and before long it was being played on Radio 1 and I was getting requests to sign it. I sorted out the legal stuff with the band’s manager who was massively supportive and it went from there.
Which is your favourite remix of Perfect Motion?
Has to be my Perfect Fitch mix hence the name, haha. By the time the record was signed and ready to go my sound had started to move on and I wanted to do a mix that reflected more my current sound but still keep the original sample. Plus a lot of the electro stuff was starting to sound very samey so I wanted to offer a different perspective on the track too.
Who would you say are your main influences?
I think my main influences talking about current producers are: Patrick Le Funk, Angello & the Swedish guys, Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk, Tocadisco’s newer stuff and Fedde Le Grand’s cooler side, people pigeon hole him with Detroit and his commercial remixes, but really his true sound is a lot more intelligent. Proper bouncy house for the dancefloor! I’m also a big lover of all the old disco stuff; it’s had so much influence on the music we make today, not just the obvious samples, but a lot of the sounds and it’s dancefloor formula.
Who is your musical icon of all time?
I’m going to have to say Daft Punk, they had a lot to do with making me love dance music, their 1st album Homework is just legendary!
Who are you listening to right now?
I was listening to some promo CDs I got in the post today, they’re in the bin now! New Tom de Neef & Laidback Luke track, Humanoidz, that’s more like it!
Who would you like to collaborate with next?
I’m already collaborating with lots of other producers Guy Williams, Filthy Rich, Mark Story, Daley Padley and I also produce with my partner in crime Ben Prok under the guise of Prok & Fitch, we’ve got some big tracks coming out this year too (we hope).
Who would you like to sing vocals for you next?
I’d love to work with Jocelyn Brown, she really is the Diva of all Divas!
What are your plans for 2008?
To make as much good music as possible, making sure it’s always true to my sound. My goal is that everywhere, everyone is playing at least one of my tracks, tall order but something to work for. I’ve got lots of exciting gigs coming up too on the DJing front so I plan to make sure I have a good time, work life balance and all that!
James Fitch feat. Suncreem 'Perfect Motion' will be out on Cayenne Recordings later this month.
