Catch Up With Kutski

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 01-09-08 15:19

Hard Dance Leg-end in the making, Radio 1 Favourite and all-round joker, who might that be? We caught up with Kutski to find out about his involvement with 'BK Presents 'The Nu Wave' and how his 2008 has gone so far.

For those not aware of you, please give us a brief introduction to who you are?!

My name is John Walker, aka DJ Kutski, I play records that are hard and fast in discotheques around the country as well as BBC Radio 1. I also like scratching.

You have just finished a track called Fracture with BK for new album BK Presents The Nu Wave- how did your collaboration come about?

Ben caught me outside a nightclub in Bognor Regis, bundled me in the back of his Robin Reliant, and threatened me with either rape or a collaboration. After I called his bluff on the first, we decided to write a track anyway!

What’s the inspiration behind the track?

Apart from the aforementioned threat, we wanted to fuse the styles of European hard dance with the UK sound. We wanted a musical section in there, but we didn't want to clutter up the solid groove of the track with too much euphoric-ness, so you get the spine chilling riff in the break, then it just hammers back to the groove when it kicks in, in a similar vein (arrangement wise) as artists like Kamui are doing!

What’s it like working with BK?

He's alright for a cockney I suppose, haha. Seriously though, BK is an amazing producer and engineer to work with. I have so many crazy ideas, thoughts and styles, a lot of the stuff I do on my own can come out very muddled up, but working with Ben, he takes the ideas and makes sense of them in a track that will be an instant hit on the dancefloor. He really listens to what you are saying and applies it to what he knows will work, and the end product really feels like a collaboration as opposed to just sitting there while someone writes a track!

What is your opinion of the hard dance scene in 2008?

More exciting than it has ever been! Let’s not kid ourselves, the scene has been stronger, but there is so much variety in the music, from the techy stuff, to groovy hard house, to bounce, to UK or Euro hard trance, to hardstyle and you get the full spectrum of this at most events! It's this variation in the scene which will keep people interested in the music and attract more people. This will lead to bigger and better events, more producers will make better tracks and the scene will boom again as hardcore has done recently! This vast array of music under the hard dance umbrella also makes it exciting to DJ and produce and there are so few boundaries you have to adhere to; this can only be a positive thing in a creative industry! So in a nutshell, the future is looking bright!

What inspires you to do this?

As cheesy as it sounds, it's the love of music! Just listening to music in the car on my way to gigs gets me completely fired up for the club and listening to music on the way back can inspire me to work on some crazy mixtape as soon as I get in! I love music in general and I do it because personally I have to!

What is your dream gig?

After playing Dance Valley in Holland, me the Donors and Alex Kidd went to Sensation Black for a bit of a knees up. I knew it was supposed to be amazing and I had seen the pics, but nothing prepared me for actually being there and experiencing the atmosphere!! 40,000 people all dressed in black, having it to the finest hardstyle and gabba acts with the most impressive event production ever seen, EVER! Yes, I'll have a slice of that please!

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you be?

A virgin.

You’re organising the ‘end of the world’ party, who’s on the guest list and who’s not coming in?

You can come, I suppose I'd have to invite Ben for getting me involved in the album, I probably wouldn't let Alex Kidd come though as I feel he would lower the tone. Also, I'd let all the evictees from this years big brother come as everyone needs someone to have a drunken fight with at the end of the night!

What’s next for you?

I've been really hectic over the summer with festivals and club gigs in the UK. I'm hoping to do a few more international bits before the end of the year including some more stuff in Holland. The radio show has also been moving from strength to strength and that is currently my main focus, because as much as I love doing the show on a personal level, its getting the scene, artists and tracks exposure at a massive level, so I think its very important that I make this my priority and keep the show as strong as possible!
