Kouncilhouse is Good For Your Soul

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 29-06-09 08:53

Kouncilhouse a.k.a Simon Tagg has been causing a stir over the last few years. Praised for his totally unique style of music imprinted in his productions and live sets, Kouncilhouse has become a much sort after name in the underground scene. Last year he sadly lost his Mother to lung disease which - along with seeing a friend's child battle with leukaemia - prompted him to do something to help. Moved by the support The Ellenor Lions Hospice offered to young people with terminal illness he decided put together a charity album It's Good For The Soul.

After the call was put out to his contacts book a block busting album of exclusive tracks from some of the world’s biggest acts came together all in the name of charity. Released digitally through leading download store www.trackitdown.net this month on his respected ADHD Digital label, all proceeds raised through this paid for download will be donated to the worthy cause. The long player contains 45 amazing breaks, house, dubstep and drum and bass tracks, all contributed from heavyweights such as Justin Robertson, Brookes Brothers, Slipmatt, Meat Katie, Krafty Kuts, Leeroy Thornhill and Deekline & Wizard. “It’s a pleasure to be involved in such a great project in such good company” says acid house legend Robertson, while Brookes Brothers agree “[that] there’s not enough projects like these for producers like us to get involved in.”

Ellenor Lions Hospice is based in Greenhithe in Kent and will benefit from any proceeds raised by the digital sale of this amazing package of cutting edge tracks. For many years they have worked in the local community to help people with terminal illness act in comfort and dignity and all involved agree that this is a worthy cause. “It’s for a great cause and everyone should want to get involved,” states drum and bass godfather Mickey Finn. We catch up the man behind the album who chats to us about that worthy cause and what else is going on in the world of Kouncilhouse.

Hello Kouncilhouse! Can you give those who don’t know a brief background of yourself and your sound?

Well ..... We'll let the music do the talking shall we?

It’s Good For The Soul is the album you have put together for a very worthy cause - ‘The Ellenor Lions Hospice’ - tell us about the cause and why you decided to do the album?

Well to be honest I was going to do it a couple of years ago but didn’t really have the contacts. Luckily now things have picked right up and I have found myself in the position to do something about this. My good friends little boy went through leukaemia twice and I saw what this foundation did for them. They were so supportive towards the family. They are a really loving foundation, but are not government funded in any way; they really do need all the help they can get. My mum also passed away at Christmas from lung disease so that was another really big inspiration to do something like this.

The album features some huge legends like Slipmatt, Brookes Brothers and Leeroy Thronhill. Did you have an idea of what tracks you wanted on the album before you approached the artists and how easy was it getting the artists to donate the tracks?

Haha, how easy was it? Well those that are in the music scene will know that trying to get 45 tracks off artists after they have said that they will do it is not the easiest thing in the world to do. I’m good friends with a lot of the artists on the album so that part wasn’t too bad, it was just getting the tunes. The whole project has been very hard and very tiring but it really has been good for the soul and to see all the love from everyone was very rewarding.

How long has the album been in the making and are you pleased with the end result? Would you consider doing it again?

The album was in the making for a good few months and yes, I am very pleased with the results hence the name of the album! Would I consider doing it again? Well yes, we are in talks now about the next project which is going to be even bigger. Fingers crossed it will all come about as planned.

What is your favourite track from the album and why?

Oh there are loads of good tunes on there but a favourite? That would be the D’Cruze track which is an absolute blinding tune; he made it for his son and there’s a bit of a good story behind it! Tom Craft’s tune is phat too. But like I said there’s loads on there, so they’re all my favourites.

Apart from the album, tell us what others productions and projects you have got coming up.

Well I just had a track released called Shed A Tear with Micky Finn and I’ve been working on a couple of other projects with Leeroy Thornhill which are due out in the summer. I’ve also been working on my new album which is due out at the end of the summer… maybe!

What’s next for Kouncilhouse and do you plan to do any further projects in this vein?

There’s lots going on at the minute, I’ve just put together a live set which is very exciting. Luckily I have Kieron Pepper on board, who used to tour with the Prodigy, and Alex Baker from Flightcrank playing drums. We also have Mr. Ricky Ranking from Rootz Manuva, Lady MC and Spanish Fly. Our main appearance this summer will be at the Secret Garden party in Huntingdon where we will be headlining one of the Saturday night stages. So there’s a good buzz in the air.

Any final messages that you would like to add?

A very special thank you to everyone that’s helped out with the album especially XFDesign.

Go buy the album R.I.P Mum
